The Blitz
District 25-4A on defense is one of the more competitive districts there are in the state from top to bottom. That said, there are still the contenders and pretenders that weed out every season. The 2013 season is no exception to the rule. Leander Rouse is a program that been on the rise and should make great strides in 2013 with a solid linebacking core with Ryan Heinrich and Martin Denmon leading the way. Cedar Park has made a name for itself over the last few seasons contending for a state title and much like Rouse, the Timberwolves will be rocking and rolling with key players at linebacker including junior Thomas Hutchings and an underrated senior in Peter Maneikis. Vandegrift is a team that might surprise some people in the main stream but they were right in the thick of the district playoff race and even the district title picture for most of the season. A few plays and stops on defense here or there would have drastically altered the 25-4A playoff picture in the Vipers favor. With DB Tristan Prukop and DL Gunner Linhart returning, the Vipers could be the team to watch defensively. DL Michael Epley is back for Leander but Lions graduated quite a bit from its 2012 squad. The question surrounding Leander is how much of an impact will graduation hits and the loss of Clint Harper have on the Lions in 2013. The Lions should have enough defense to keep them securely in the playoffs but things will not come as easy as it has been in recent years. Vista Ridge got off to a hot start defensively in 2012 with three shutouts in their first four games, but the impression of those shutouts are only as good as the schedule indicates. Keep an eye on Vista Ridge junior DB DaQuan Patton, who could have a very big season in the backfield. The Rangers are expected to be in the middle of the playoff race, but whether they rise above the expectations will be the keys to the playoff picture as a whole.
