5A D1 State Semifinal: College Station 28 – Mansfield Summit 21

Mansfield Summit fought tooth-and-nail to draw even with College Station during Friday’s Class 5A Division I state semifinal, but the Cougars’ Marquise Collins wasn’t going to be denied.

The junior running back found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to help College Station (15-0) build a cushion and fend off Mansfield Summit for a 28-21 victory at Midway ISD’s Panther Stadium.

The Jaguars (11-4) refused to go away and saw David Hopkins Jr. hit Kerya Powell for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 1:19 left to go, but the Cougars covered up the resulting onside kick moments later to clinch a trip to the 5A-DI state championship game in Arlington.

College Station is slated to take on state finalist Katy Paetow (14-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17 at AT&T Stadium.

Head coach Steve Huff’s Cougars led 14-0 after one-quarter of play following a 1-yard TD plunge from Collins and a scoring pass from quarterback Jett Huff to Traylen Suel. Summit broke through for its first TD to slice its deficit to 14-7 with 3:35 to go until halftime.

The Jags continued to battle and knotted the score at 14-all when QB David Hobbs crossed the goal line on a keeper late in the third period.

That’s when Collins took over. The junior Division I recruit snagged a 46-yard pass to set up his own 10-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter, and Collins later broke away from the pack for a 48-yard scoring run that came with just 5:37 left in the game.

Collins capped the night with 230 yards and three TDs on 31 carries as he went over the 200-yard plateau for the fourth consecutive outing. Collins enters the state title game having amassed 2,625 yards and 37 scores on the ground.

Jett Huff finished 12 of 17 passing for 162 yards and a score against Summit, while Bradley Jones made for receptions for 43 yards.
