As mentioned before, there is no real competition - TM?, Robstown?, Kingsville?, Rockport? - plus valley teams in non-district and playoffs?, plus other CC teams in non-district? They are going to win 7-8 games guaranteed every year. I agree, move them out of the conversation of top teams.

Calallen wins because they have built a great program and great tradition in their area. I've heard a lot of crying about "no competition" as if they are a team from north of I-10 who travels south for easy wins. I think it's just wrong for anyone to want to rob those kids of all they've done. They can't help it if they don't live in an area where money has attracted a larger percentage of the better coaching staffs, which has bred better competition in some areas. They have no control over who lives in their school district. They play the game, strive to be the best, and reach for a championship, just like every other team that puts on the pads. I think it's shameful to belittle their efforts based on the area they happen to live in. As an aside, just imagine how awesome they would be if they had more competition before the playoffs.

Living in North Texas for the past 12 years, Calallen might get out of district of the 3A schools up here. Too much speed!
No one is belittling them, just saying they do not belong in the conversation of truly great teams. Plus, they can schedule some tough games in non-district to prove the critics wrong. Up here, teams from DFW play the best teams from east or west, regardless of distance. We traveled from Dallas to west Texas to play Odessa one week, then traveled east to play John Tyler. San Antonio, Houston, Cen-Tex area - they could do it if they really wanted to.
Saw Willie Mack a few years back recruiting up here, now that was some good football back then.

Actually I don't think they could do it even if they wanted to. They could schedule one or two of these "better teams", but what if those teams are having an off year? You wouldn't know until the season started, and by then you are committed to all that extra time and money to play a team that isn't going to help you improve. I can't think of a single parent or taxpayer that would get behind that plan.

No split title team is the best. They didn't beat everyone and the pool was watered down. 1985 Houston Jack Yates Lions.

I think that's pretty obvious. The one title. I certainly think it is quite an accomplishment and something to be proud of. Hang in there, hopefully they'll get one eventually.

There has been a trend in high school football especially in Texas. There are new High schools that are being built every year pulling the normall group of players from these schools that are considered top programs to new schools. I think we will start to see these normally powerhouse football programs start to deminish and we will start to see new powerhouse schools emerging within the next 5-10 years.

1985 Houston Yates, 1987 Plano, 1989 Odessa Permian, 1990 Houston Aldine, 1991 Odessa Permian, 1992 Temple, 1994 Tyler John Tyler, 1996 Lewisville & Austin Westlake, 1997 Flower Mound Marcus, 2000 Katy, 2003 Galena Park North Shore, 2005 SLC, 2006 SLC, 2007 Katy, 2009 Abilene, 2010 Pearland & Euless Trinity, 2011 SLC & Spring DeKaney. In other words. almost every State championship team can be categorized as being great. If they were #1 or #2 in Texas; you know they had to be good. It's just sad what the UIL has done to water down their accomplishments. They need to either allow the 2 Division Champions play for all the marbles; or else go back to the old format of only allowing (2) teams from each district into the playoffs. Texas has gone over 20 years now without having a true State Champion. I omitted 1988 Dallas Carter from the list because they can be categorized as being an "Outlaw team." Likewise for 2007 Miami Northwestern on the National list because of their crimes .

For the 1 season win by highest number, you left out the state champion Permian teams of 1989 and 1991, both of which went 16-0.

Some of the greatest teams might be:
2007 Katy, 2005-2006 SLC, 2003 GP NORTH SHORE, 1985 HOUSTON YATES 1989,1991 ODESSA PERMIAN, 1990 HOUSTON ALDINE & 2000 KATY.
The last 3 years have produced some teams that could play with anyone -- 2009 ABILENE, 2010 PEARLAND, EULESS TRINITY,COPPELL & KATY;
AND 2011 SLC, LAKE TRAVIS, SPRING DEKANEY & DALLAS SKYLINE. I'b be pretty difficult to put them in any particular order.

I quote Tom Kimbrough, the greatest Texas High School football coach in history. "We just never got all wrapped up in that MOJO stuff." This was after the author of Friday Night Lights called him and asked him about several games in which Plano beat Permian. He later said, "I hope I'm not ruining your little book." Permian never has and never will beat the Wildcats of Plano Sr. High.

The 2 losses I remember most vividly were in 1977 & 1978. Permian entered the Semi-Finals both years 13-0 & #1 in the state. Plano came out on top both times 3-0 & 6-3. I believe Permian tied the 2nd game in the 4th quarter; then Plano came right back and kicked the winning field goal. Whatever it took; Plano was going to come out on top. In 1977 Plano (13-1-1) went on to win State; beating Port Neches-Groves (14-1) 13-10 in a real classic in Texas Stadium. However in 1978 Houston Stratford (15-0) behind Craig James; had no trouble with Plano; leading 13-7 at the half. Went on to a 29-13 victory. Plano scored in the closing seconds to make the final score look some what respectable.
