Guess this would be directed to gbdad or anyone else that could come up with some info about the QB that led L.D. Bell to the district title in '82 and beat a Trinity Trojan team that beat two number one rated teams that season , Bryan in a non-district game and Odessa Permian in the playoffs. This was brought up on the Trojan site. Thought I would move the subject over here.

I quote gbdad "His name was Craig Presnow(spelling ?) " Can some of you Blue raider faithful research some old annuals or somewhere and get this QB's name? I saw him play several times that season and was so impressed that he still sticks in my mind.

'82 is long gone but brings back some great memories. Bell started the season off with a win over Western Hills which was not such a big surprise. However Bell's season was somewhat of a surprise to a lot of folks making it to the state final that year.

Can someone check also that Edwards was the coach at that time. I know he and the Raiders experienced good success against rival Trinity during the 80's.

1982 was a great year for both Trinity and L D Bell. They played twice in one year with "Craig Presnall" as QB for LD Bell and "Jay Fitch" QB for Trinity (now coaching at Trinity). L D Bell was on about the 9 or so yard line and TOOK A TIE instead of risking a turnover (when no one could ever stop the run to the left side). It was a safe but chicken move by the Bell coaches BUT it advanced L D Bell on to the State Finals in the "ASTRO DUMP". Bell lost, due largely to the humidity and temperature in stadium (after playing 4 weeks in Texas Stadium where it was between 40 and 60 degrees and dry). THE REDICULOUS flat field caused Bells QB, Craig Presnall to have a bad night primarily because (Bell was never given adequate practice on the dumpy FLAT field of the Astro-Dome). Bell should have come the day before the game to practice, but Edwards choose to "do the long day approach" and it backfired.

Bell's Coaches were talented beyond reality with Jack Gibson (Defense Coordinator) and Coach Mathews as (Offensive Co.). These two were real standouts.

Coach Richard Dibble was one of the best offensive line coaches to coach at the high school level as well.


Trinity says (we almost won)! Bell says (we should have kicked the stupid ball or run it over the left side where no one could stop them). In the end, OVERTIME would have brought LD Bell a win, but a simple kick or short run with time left would have put Trinity down for the second time, no doubt.


Best part of the LD Bell team was the left side of the line with Tom Kaiser and Tom MIddaugh as Left Guard and Tackle respectively. No one ever stopped Bell inside the 20 Yard Line, solely because of these two guys who were not particularly big, but played angry and they were very strong, both bench pressing over 350 pounds as juniors. Both went on to UNT (NTSU back then). Middaugh shinned but Kaiser only played one year due to flunking a physical due to prior injuries.

Yeah well. The point is, we will never know what would have happened. Since Bell was able to go on in the playoffs, why even bother saying you think Bell would have won in OT?

Trinity just wanted the chance to play in OT. Edwards knew the situation and played it to his advantage running clock, being conservative playing for the tie. I was only 11 years old. It was my first HS football game to attend.
