Complete table back to the first year of the UIL Playoffs - 1920. In the 1920's the state hadn't yet been officially divided into the 4 regions we have today so the champs listed above are placed where they most likely would fit geographically. In the early days of the playoffs, the UIL decided (by proximity it seems) which two teams would play. So the District 1 champ didn't always play the District 2 champ in bi-district as it is today. The 1924 playoffs are listed below as an example:

In 1924 the state was divided into Class A (larger schools) and Class B (small schools). Only Class A schools had a playoff that crowned a state champ. Class A was divided into 8 Sections with one team from each section advancing to the playoffs.

In the first round of the playoffs:
Section 1 champ Vernon played Section 5 champ Dallas Oak Cliff
Section 2 champ Cisco played Section 3 champ Cleburne
Section 6 champ Marshall played Section 7 champ Beaumont
Section 4 champ Waco played Section 8 champ Temple

In the Semis:
Section 5 Dallas Oak Cliff played Section 2 Cisco
Section 7 Beaumont played Section 4 Waco

In the Finals:
Section 5 Dallas Oak Cliff beat Section 4 Waco

I've finally gotten to the point that I have been able to calculate at least semi-accurate strength of schedule ratings for historic teams back to 1980 and decided to compile my own crude "Power Rating" to see what it came up with.

The Strength of Schedule (SOS) number on the table below is simply the combined winning percentage of that team's opponents after subtracting out the wins and losses accrued at the hands of the team in question. (i.e. the record for Trinity that was used to calculate the strength for SLC-2006 was 11-0-0, and Hebron's was 10-0-0 for Cedar Hill-2006 since Cedar Hill gave them the only 2 losses they had for the year).

The usual formula for Strength of Schedule used by the pros is (2/3 X opponent's win%) + (1/3 x opponent's-opponent's win%). Unfortunately I'm not to the point that I have complete enough records to calculate opponent's opponents numbers so my SOS is comprised of just opponent's win%.

The 2nd column (MOV) is average Margin of Victory for the season

The 3rd column (Power) is MOV multiplied by SOS, which gives a large amount of weight to MOV but if there's a more interesting way to crunch the numbers let me know.

5A State Champions Compared 1980-2007

As far as which state champ had the toughest schedule out of all 46 5A title holders past and present, without a doubt it's Marshall, the Big School champs of 1990. At the very minimum 15 of their 16 opponents that year ended the season with a winning record. I'm still trying to hunt down the season record for one of the Louisiana schools they played non-district so that one is not included but even if I plugged in 0-10 for that school Marshall would still have a strength of schedule higher than the next highest.

The lowest was North Shore - 2003. Over half (8 out of 15) of their opponents ended the season with 5 wins or less and five of them had 2 wins or less. Even though they played the weakest schedule, their average margin of victory was so much higher than everyone elses they still came out on top (barely) in the power ranking.

As far as which team played the most games against undefeated opponents - there are 4 teams who each won 4 games over opponents who lost to no one else the rest of the season.

2005 - Southlake Carroll (Abilene 12-1-0, Plano 13-1-0, Lufkin 14-1-0, Katy 14-1-0)
2004 - Southlake Carroll (Abilene 12-1-0, Denton Ryan 12-2-0 - played them twice, Lufkin 14-1-0)
1995 - SA Roosevelt (SA Clark 11-1-0, Austin Westlake 12-1-1, Converse Judson 14-1-0, Flower Mound Marcus 15-1-0)
1991 - Odessa Permian (Arlington Lamar 12-1-0, Midland Lee 12-2-0 - played them twice, Waco 13-1-1)

I don't know if this will be helpful as a reference or just cumbersome... but here are the actual numbers from 1980-2006. The numbers in light blue on the right side of each season are the win-loss records of each of the opponents with the result vs. the champ subtracted out. You'll notice that the seasons for Beaumont French and Lake Highlands are missing... I'm still hunting down a few scores and will add them in when I've got the complete seasons. I know WHO they played and who won, but I don't have the individual scores yet.
