( old Dallas Morning News and Waxahachie papers called Ennis the Tigers; there is also an old photo showing Ennis Tigers baseball uniform. However, the Ennis Tigers were a minor league D baseball team from 1914 to 1917, which was part of the Central Texas League or Central Texas Trolley League. )

Note: Ennis previously had a drill team organized in 1934-35.

School Song: "Maroon and White" arranged by Robert James (Bob) Banner ( Class of '39 ) and composed by Thomas B. Granger (Band Director in '39)

"Ennis, ole Ennis, we'll stand by thee,
Faithful and loyal we will ever be,
True to the colors that stand for right,
Loyal sons and daughters of Maroon and White.
We will always face the conquest with spirits bold.
Laurels for ole Ennis High will be our goal."

Fight Song: "Aggie"

Note: James D. King, Jr. organized the Ennis High School Band in 1934. He went to Texas A&M for two years, but graduated from SMU. However, his favorite college was Texas A&M. He was the Ennis High School band director from 1934 to 1936.

School/Local History:

Ennis was established as a railroad town on June 8, 1872 and was named after Cornelius Ennis, a director of the Houston & Texas Central ( H & TC ) Railroad. Ennis was known as the place where the railroad and cotton fields meet. The first school in Ennis was Cumberland Presbyterian in February of 1873. Ennis was incorporated in 1874 and Capt. C. Pannell was the first mayor. By about 1876, Ennis had a population of 2,000. Ennis has the widest Main Street in the world.

In August of 1881, the Ennis public school system opens, making it the first public school system in Ellis County and one of the first in the state. The first high school building was built in 1881 at 501 N. Gaines Street. Prior to 1881, Ennis had six private schools including West Hill Academy. The first graduating class of 7 students graduated in May of 1886. The first high school building (1881-1893) was destroyed by fire in 1893. The second high school building (1894-1916) was built on the site of the first building at 501 N. Gaines Street. The second building was a large wooden Victorian structure costing $ 26,000, locally known as "Old Faithful", and was considered one of the best equipped high schools in the state.

The Texas Midland Railroad reached Ennis in the winter of 1893-94. The H & TC Railroad moved their round house and machine shops from Corsicana to Ennis in December of 1889, making Ennis their northern headquarters. By 1900, Ennis had a population of 4,919 making it the largest city in Ellis County at that time.

In 1901, Ennis had four public school buildings, 1,117 pupils, and 21 teachers. The Class of 1911 had 16 students. The first Bashaba yearbook was published for the 1914-15 school year with 36 students graduating that year. In 1915, Ennis became a member of the North Texas High School Athletic Association. In 1916, there were 30 graduates. The third high school building (1916-1981) opens in 1916 at 501 N. Gaines Street and was constructed directly in front of the old second high school building. The old second high school building sat in the center of the school campus. The three story brick third high school building was formally dedicated on September 10, 1917. In 1917, there were 39 graduates. Ennis schools had 1194 students and J. W. O'Banion was superintendent in 1920. Also in 1920, there were 24 graduates and was the first year Ennis was eligible for football playoffs. Ennis schools had a band as early as 1924 which was formed out of the City of Ennis municipal or city-wide band and was directed by W. Ray Devers. The 1939 Cicerone yearbook states that the Ennis High School Band was organized in 1934 by James D. King, Jr. He went to Texas A&M for two years, but graduated from SMU. However, his favorite college was Texas A&M. He was the Ennis High School band director from 1934 to 1936.

Ennis was home to the Ellis County Agricultural Fair and Livestock Exposition from 1922 until about 1936. The fair grounds were located one mile northwest of Ennis at the north end of Preston and Sherman streets. Ennis had previously hosted the fair at least as early as 1905. The Ennis drill team was organized during the 1934-35 school year. On October 20, 1938, Ennis organizes an Athletic Association. It is said that the EHS Pep Squads of the 1930's and 40's consisted of girls and boys. The EHS Girls Basketball team won State in 1941.

The fourth Ennis high school opens in 1981 on Lake Bardwell Drive (State Highway 34) and the old brick third high school building became the Junior High School from 1981 to 2007. On March 3, 1995, Dallas Cowboys coaching legend Tom Landry makes on emergency landing in an open field next to the Ennis High School on Lake Bardwell Drive. In 2001 this emergency landing site would become the new 10,000 seat Lion Stadium. In August of 2008, the new 11th and 12th grade addition to the high school opens as well as the new Junior High School building. Also in 2008, the old Lions Stadium and old high school gym are razed to build a new intermidiate school.

Ennis is known as "The Bluebonnet City" and annually holds the Bluebonnet Trails/Festival and the National Polka Festival. Ennis is also home to the Texas Motorplex drag racing facility.

Haven't had a chance to work on Ennis much lately but the partial season records I have for 1929 and 1930 is as follows:

(the date listed is the date of the articles I have referencing the game so in most cases the game would have taken place the day before)

1929 (0-5-0)
9/21 Corsicana 6-19
9/29 Midlothian 6-13
11/5 Grandview 0-7
11/12 Groesbeck 0-18
11/17 Kerens 0-6

1930 (1-6-0)
9/20 Corsicana 0-71
9/28 Corsicana IOOF Home 0-37
10/5 Kerens 10-7
10/19 Italy 13-33
10/25 Corsicana State Home 0-39
11/?? Groesbeck 0-12
11/22 Midlothian 0-24

I know for a fact that there was at least one more game played in Nov. 1930 which Ennis lost but don't have any of the details

What's up WOS87!

I got a good one for you to figure out. In 1915 (maybe October?), Ennis beat Grove School. Do you have any idea who "Grove School" is?

I thought there was an old school in Ellis County called this but I couldn't find one unless they are referring to one of the many "Oak Grove" communities around here. I think all the surrounding counties around Ellis had an Oak Grove.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE A CLUE WHO "GROVE SCHOOL" FROM 1915 IS AND WHAT THERE MASCOT WOULD BE? Blooming Grove maybe?

I still don't know what the mascot for Hardin School of Dallas is? If I get a chance, the Dallas Public LIbrary downtown has some yearbooks from Hardin School around 1913 to 1917. I'd like to take a look at those yearbooks.

Have a good day!

Thanks, kbo

1920-21 Ennis High's First Basketball Season

I know this is a football site, but I couldn't find a place to put this info on the basketball site??

I ran across this info while I was looking up old football scores. I thought this was kind of interesting.

The 1921 version of "The Bashaba" yearbook called this Ennis' first Basketball Season.

12-22-1920 Ennis 19 at Rice 15
1-08-1921 at Ennis 25 Bardwell 26
1-15-1921 Ennis 25 at Alma 20
1-18-1921 Ennis 25 at Bardwell 22
1-21-1921 Ennis 18 at Corsicana 52
1-26-1921 Ennis 7 at Kaufman 43

Record 3-3-0

Ennis Lions ~ Champions of Ellis County!!

Not sure about the Coach for basketball.
Zebbie L Howell, Jr. was football coach
J. W. O'Banion was Superintendent
E. D. Bussey was Principal

Thanks for the Welcome earlier kbo!

I believe I remember how in 1973 in that loss to Hatchie, the Indians wore those infamous 'Beat Ennis' jerseys -

Does anybody know whatever happened to those and if they ever wore them again?

I was a soph on the team that lost to Indians when they wore those "BEAT ENNIS" jerseys. The following year, they "SUMA II" or "CUMA II" or something like that. It was clear to us that the "II" meant they thought they would win two-in-a-row against us, but we spanked them (something like 50-18).
I don't know if they ever wore those BEAT ENNIS jerseys again...
