not good. more meddling by the UIL. they'll select a "central" site that will suit them (meaning: huge seating capacity) but it may not be central to the schools that end up in it. you could end up with two fairly close schools (say Trinity and Tyler Lee) having to drive to Austin to play their state match.

further, the playing surface is a huge issue for teams. some teams prefer natural grass - because they play on it all the time or because it slows the game down. if a team has played on real grass all year and gets sent to a site for the state championship that has an artificial surface that would be a big advantage for the other team. that choice will be taken away from the coaches.

I especially don't like playing high school games in huge college venues where a giant crowd of 20,000 gets swallowed up and it looks like no one came out. Texas Stadium is the exception (the roof keeps the noise in) but I don't want to play at Kyle Field or in Austin. the size of the stadium destroys the intimacy we're used to with high school ball.

but you know something like this would happen after the uproar over Highland Park playing in a small stadium so that their big money fans didn't all get a ticket ....

well trinity and T. Lee would not play in the state game, but they could meet in the semi finals. I dont mind, they do it many other sports. I think when a school gets to the final game, it would not be that big of a deal to drive to Austin, or somewhere near the center of texas. This last year had quite a few problems, and i think if some of the state games were at different lacations they would have gotten 2X the attendance, and then some.

Is the UIL trying to become the NCAA? I've had my issues with the UIL in recent years and this is just another way for them to take away control from the coaches. The coin flip is the fairest way to determine the home team who in turn gets to pick the site. Thats what home field advantage is. If a stadium can't accomidate all the visiting teams fans (see Highland Park here) then thats called "Home Field" advantage. As someone who played from 3rd grade through college and coached High School football, if your on the field playing and concentrating on the game, you don't hear the fans.....The UIL isn't "Big Brother", they are already watering down the playoffs by adding a 4th team, go back to 2 teams per district and one State Champ and they want have to worry about coordinating the television contract.

While I agree with most of what's been said about what is wrong with this decision, I think there's an even greater problem. What happens when Austin is selected as the venue, and one contender is from far West Texas (say Lubbock) and the other is from Austin (say Westlake)?

One team spends the night at home, while the other travels over 400 miles (well over 8 hours on a bus). Which one of those teams do you want to coach?

There's also the possibility of the title game tickets being presold to the public in advance which leaves the fans of the schools involved sitting in the less than desirable seats. As in the basketball state final games, the schools involved have to sit at one end of the arena because the tickets are presold.
We all know this is a done-deal but I would like to hear assurances from the UIL that the schools playing the games will have first chance at the choice seats - then put the tickets on sale - at the stadium - to the general public.

well trinity and T. Lee would not play in the state game.

Just to set the record straight, neither Odessa Permian nor Highland Park will be in the state championship game.

well, it seemed very unlikley that the 1995 SA roosevelt team would be there also, but they ended up winning it. I think Trinity will have a good showing in 06, but once again SGP will be to much. Then They will lose to another DFW team in the playoffs.

That's why we play the games buddy. TTFFL, I don't think PP meant that as in we weren't going to make it to the finals, I think they were just pointing out that Trinity and Tyler Lee would not play for a title because we are both in the same region...I think.

If a school has to travel 6-8 hrs. to play let them go the night before and get a hotel . I know the logistics would be a nightmare but they would be a little rested. Look at us when we went to Round Rock it took us the 1st quarter to wake up!!!!

OK, I took it the other way. You hit my defensive button, especially on our home page. By the way, he is a SHE!

Or maybe with all the big corporate sponsorships they could fly if it ends up being a lengthy drive.

OK its a done deal but that doesn't mean I have to like it, for all the reason already posted. Just seems a little too prepackaged for my taste....and now with 128 5A teams making the playoffs a little too watered down....how fair is it going to be when you have an 9-6 team playing a 15-0 team and the 9-6 team has home field advantage?

it's a done deal. the site is San Antonio on Saturday Dec 23. Game time for the first game is early is 2 p.m., the second game is at 7 p.m.

not good any way you look at it. a game that close to Christmas far far away. how many stay home and just watch it on TV?

If it's Trinity...I'm going! Ain't no way I'm sitting at home while Trinity plays a state championship game.

Convince me the true fans of the schools who have attended every game aren't going to get the short end of the stick!
