Texas HS football has produced it's share of great running backs. In your opinion, who is the best? This poll is for the greatest high school running back. Do not base it on what they did in college or the NFL. While we're on the subject of running backs, who do you feel was the best running back you saw this year, and who do you feel are the top backs returning next year?

As much as i love the Tyler Rose Earl Campbell.......

I voted Cedric Benson......

Seems like Cedric had the ability more often than not to win a game almost by himself.....
I know that without him Midland Lee would not have one ANY of those State titles in the 90's
I think Earl had a better college career-IMO
But Cedric was a more dominating force in high school.....

I also chose Big Earl. Was a tough pick, though. That Other kid put together a fine career. John Other out of That High School could surely dominate a game. Coach Whatshisname really knew how to use him in that offense, too. Anytown, Texas will always be proud of their most famous alumni.

Seriously, I guess I would have to look up all the stats, and see game films to know who was best. Unfortunately, I've mostly just seen those who went on to college and pro greatness. If I had seen Ken Hall in action, I may have put him on top.
Used to love to watch Billy Sims, Eric Dickerson, and Kenneth Davis run, even though they didn't play for the Cowboys.

I am a Earl Campbell nut. But I NEVER got to see him play live. I did however get to see Rodney Thomas play from the sideline and on the field cause he was a year ahead of me. It would have been scary to see the kind of Pub Rodney had of gotten if he was at a 5A school. He was an athlete. Not only in football. But a track star as well. When we wanted to talk about speed we talked about Rodney.

I have heard of the Sugarland Express but I could not in good faith vote for him. The 50's were a different area, and a different time in history. Not always did the best player get to play on a team that could plays 8 or 9 games a year because if the cost of the trips. Keep in mind his number are off the charts but I can think of 2 guys off hand that would have eclipsed his number given the chance.

Rodney Thomas was a beast!

If I had to pick the one back to have on my team, it would come down to Billy Sims and Earl Campbell.

The only person who could rival Earl Campbell's speed and power was Bo Jackson...period!

But Billy Sims was amazing to watch. That Oklahoma wishbone with Billy Sims back there taking option pitches from Thomas Lott was one of the greatest spectacles these eyes have ever seen.

The greatest back did not even go to college. He unfortunately was a special education student from Vernon. At 6' 3" and 250 lbs, he was the fastest player in the district and the 100 meter district champion as a junior. The same day he won 5th in the shot put at the same district meet. After being recruited by USC, Notre Dame, and many other national powers, it was determined that he would never meet minimum acedemic requirements. I saw him take the opening play 70 yards for a touchdown after flattening Zach Thomas in a 33 -10 romp over Pampa. In a legendary performance against Southlake Carroll, he had 288 yards at Pennington Field in 1991. Vernon lost, but ask anyone from Southlake about Dexter Butler.

I'm amazed that Dimitri Nance only got 1 mention. He is modern day 5A Tested. Not many on the list 5A. Dimitri made brilliant runs after being hit. He was also very effective using zone blocking from his team mates.

Give him some time. I'm sure after he tears it up in college and goes pro he'll get plenty of love on here.

I forgot to mention that pretty much every game last season, he was pulled from the game early 3rd quarter, if not sooner.

I really like Hall as a person he is just as humble as anyone evey... I grew up loving the LONGHORNS and anyone who ran the ball the way THE TYLER ROSE did in burt orabge was gonna be one of my favorites for life EARL the PEARL was greatness made by the hand of GOD himself and led as though MOses was in front his story is so AWESOME if you have ever heard him witness you will get chills....I remember him telling me one time he was so broke during his years at UT he would just sit on the steps of the dormitory as all the other kids went to places he only dreamed of as simple as a night club he said he would feel like crying but knew he was to big to cry so he would just sit and stare across the campus all alone..... I have also always loved ERIC DICKERSON i played against the PONY EXPRESS back in the early eighties and I would just watch in amasement as he took a hand off and scooted down the sideline...It's funny I played against ERIC, Craig James, and Lance Mcelhenny(spelling)( Lance was a QB for SMU and I was a QB for Texas) now our kids play against each other in high school as he is in Highland Park and has a great kid who is I believe a freshman this year as is mine...LIfe is funny and way too short.......

This is an easy choice its Kenneth Hall from Sugar Land just look at these stats.

11,232 career rushing yards - most in the state, most in the country.
4,045 highest season rushing yards - most in the state, 3rd most in the country.
337.1 YPG for a season - most in the state, most in the country.
38 100+ yards games - most in the state, 5th in the country.
899 career points - most in the state, 4th most in the country.
395 points in one season - most in the state 4th most in the country.
32.9 PPG for one season - most in the state,, most in the country.
57 touchdowns in one season - most in the state, 5th most in the country.
4.8 TD per game for one season - most in the state, most in the country.
14,558 all-purpose career yards - most in the state, 4th most in country.
5,146 all-purpose season yards - 2nd in the state, 6th most in the country.
428 all-purpose YPG - most in the state, 3rd most in the country.

With these stats its easy to see that without any doubt Kenneth Hall is the best running back in Texas and probably the nation.

Dimitri Nance was only the 2nd 5A RB to gain over 3000 yards in 1 season. He didn't do it again some 2a or 3a competition.
