One of the best wasn't even on the list. Denvis Manns of lufkin high school in 1994 was a monster on the feild. He rush for 200 yards on some of the best in Texas at the time like State Champion John Tyler,Longveiw , Tyler Lee , A&M cons. , Marshall, Plano . He had over 3 game where he went for 300 yards. Ruhed for a 1,000 yard all four years at New Mexico State. If you think he wasn't the real deal find some one he played against and ask them!!!

Texas HS football has produced it's share of great running backs. In your opinion, who is the best? This poll is for the greatest high school running back. Do not base it on what they did in college or the NFL. While we're on the subject of running backs, who do you feel was the best running back you saw this year, and who do you feel are the top backs returning next year?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I know, I'm a homer, but Derke Robinson shows some flashes of 'brilliance.'

What a list of running backs! Very hard to choose any of those guys....one guy that hasn't been mentioned is Adrian Peterson...what a beast he was.

I would have to say that my favorites would be Billy Sims, Earl Campell, and Erick Dickerson.

Personally, I think Jerod Douglas was the most dominating. Kenneth Hall if you go by the records..but in the 50's Kenneth Hall was playing in a segregated UIL, so you never really know how great he was.

Funny how we are the only 2 that have said anything about Jerod.........

im a homer too, and i know he didn't put up the numbers for 4 years like some of those other players did, but dimitri nance's 3000 yard, 40 td season this year has to be among the best in state history, right?

can anyone post like the best all time seasons for running backs? most yards, yards/carry, tds etc... im sure there have been years where players got more than what dimitri has, but i can't imagine very many of them.

LT's best NFL seasons are already as good if not better than anyone's you previously mentioned. none of them had any seasons close to what LT put up in '03. 1645 yards with a 5.3 ypc av, with 100 catches for 725 yards and 17 total tds. campbell had 2 seasons with more rushing yards than that, no season with half as many recieving yards or 1/2 the catches, and more total tds than that in a season once. same with dickerson, 4 seasons with more rushing yards than that, 1 season with half as many catches (51) and no seasons with half as many recieving yards. also, 1 season with more total td's. LT has played 4 1/2 seasons. dickerson played 12, campbell played 9. campbell's got 9407 yards (1045.2 yps), dickerson 13259 yards (1104.9 yps) and tomlinson is ALREADY at 6551 yards (1455.7 yps) [when divided by 4 1/2 for seasons]....how can you say he can't hold their jock. he can run, block, and catch out of the backfield with the best in leagues history. maybe he wasn't this dominant in high school or maybe they were, but to say that ladanian tomlinson can't hold their jock is ABSURD.

LT has better players than Earl could dream about on his team!!! Drew brees is a great QB (WESTLAKE BOY) Antonio gates!!! Keenan Mcardel!!!! I mean LT is the best RB in the NFL today i think, but put him on the texans team and i dont know how much he would help. He isnt as physical as earl... Earl carried the team LT dosent!!!!

ignorance is bliss.

LT didn't always have all that surrounding talent, and he has ALWAYS carried the chargers.
hes scored at least 10 rushing tds in all 5 of his NFL seasons, with at least 1236 yards in every year (rookie year being the least amount of yards thus far).

the chargers were 1-15 the season before tomlinson's arrival. since then, they have gone
5-11
8-8
4-12
12-4
8-5(current).

hardly a dominating team around him. every team (up until last year when they got gates and their passing game started to improve) stacked the line and focused 100% of their attention on LT. he has dealt with that his whole career, and he's easily on pace to break some of the biggest records of all time if he can continue playing. saying LT doesn't carry the team is like saying dirk doesn't carry the mavericks or lebron doesn't carry the cav's. they may have other good players on the team, but without their star, they aren't very good.

LT has averaged 395.8 touches per season over his career (including this season which has a few games left to be played). by the end of this season his touches/season will be well over 400 and he'll be averaging around 27 touches/game. if you can honestly say that someone getting the ball that frequently isn't carrying the load for his team, then you don't know very much about football.

I would go with ken hall on this one.

go tigers! KingFan you are right............ I could have run for 2000 yards behind the line Wes had. Also I remember one game against Robstown in 92 or 93 when Michael FEDEX Booker had around 400 or so yards before half-time, and all this in less than ten touches of the ball. Even though Michael was on pace to break the single game rushing record he was pulled from the game for the entire second half, and thus Wes made his debut at Calallen. After the game the coach was asked why Michael was not allowed to go for the record and the reply was that they did not know he was that close to breaking it. This was total bull because all of the fans kept yelling to the bench telling the staff how much more yardage was needed. I do however think WES was a great south Texas running back, but no where near a Earl,Eric or Billy Great............

If we aren't counting what they did post HS, I would have to add Edwin Simmons from Hawkins to the list. (I have posted comments on him in other parts of the site.) But, I grew up about 25 miles south of Tyler and heard the reports weekly on Earl Campbell. He was truely a man among boys when he stepped onto the field. The best attribute Campbell brought to the game, however, was his humility.

When I went to see HP play at tyler rose. My dad told me about when he went to st marks and how he played 1 game at Tyler Rose vs JT. He got killed like 40-14 but he was relieved that Earl Campbell was only in 8th grade so he could not play.

LT was there before brees, before gates, mccardell...he has been his whole team, and is generally, the whole team.
