Home Record: 26-12-2
Away Record: 10-28-2
Division Finish: 4th - Norris Division

Season Summary: The North Stars would continue to play losing hockey as they posted a record of 36-40-4. With North Stars struggling to draw fans co-owner George Gund expressed interest in moving the team to San Jose. However, the NHL wanted to keep its Minnesota presence. So the NHL announced it would dissolve the merger 1978 Cleveland Barons and allows Gund to move half the team, establishing an expansion team following the 1990/91 season, while the North Stars, were purchased by Norm Green, who was seen as the savior of North Stars Hockey.

Record: 27-39-14
Points: 68
Home Record: 19-15-6
Away Record: 8-24-8
Division Finish: 4th - Norris Division
Conference Finish: 7th - Campbell Conference
NHL Finish: 16th
Season Summary: With uncertainty surrounding the North Stars the team would get off to a slow start under new Coach Bob Gainey posting a 3-9-3 recurs in their first 15 games, playing in front of 5,000 fans at the Met Center. However, as the season wore on the North Stars began to put the pieces together acquiring Jim Johnson and Chris Dalquist and for the Pittsburgh Penguins for Larry Murphy to toughen the defense. As the second half started the Stars started playing better hockey posting a 14-6-6 record from late January to March 17th. Although the North Stars finished with a less then stellar 27-39-14 record they would sneak into the playoffs by finishing in 4th place. Entering the playoffs the North Stars were ranked 15th of 16 teams, facing the Chicago Blackhawks who won the President's Trophy. The Stars would get off to fast start stealing Game 1 in overtime. After 4 games the series was tied at 2 games apiece when the North Stars stunned the Blackhawks with a 6-0 win in Chicago to take a 3-2 series lead. With a chance to complete the upset at home the North Stars beat the Blackhawks 3-1 in Game 6. In the Norris Finals the North Stars faced the St. Louis Blues who had the 2nd best record in the NHL, and continued to play solid hockey grabbing a 3-1 series lead. After dropping Game 5 in St. Louis the North Stars completed the upset with a 4-2 win in game 6 to move on to the Campbell Conference Finals. In the Conference Finals the North Stars faced the defending Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers, splitting the first 2 games on the road. As the series shifted to Minnesota the North Stars exploded scoring 15 goals in the next 2 games to grab a 3-1 series lead. In Game 5 in Edmonton the North Stars Bobby Smith on a break beat Grant Fuhr to give the North Stars the lead for good, as they advanced to their 2nd cup final with a 3-2 win. In the Stanley Cup Finals the North Stars were matched up against the Pittsburgh Penguins, after splitting the first 2 games in Pittsburgh the North Stars took a 2--1 series lead with a 3-1 win in front of a load sold out crowd at the Met Center. However the Penguins would recover to win the next 3 games as the North Stars ran out of gas closing the series out in 6 games.

Record: 32-42-6

Home Record: 20-16-4
Away Record: 12-26-2
Division Finish: 4th - Norris Division

NHL Finish: 17th
Season Summary: Coming off their improbable trip to the Stanley Cup Finals the North Stars Had to deal with losing several players to the expansion San Jose Sharks due to dissolution of the Cleveland Barons merger, while getting to select players in the expansion draft the North Stars still lost depth, stifling any momentum from the run to the finals. In fact the North Stars would need to scramble just to make the playoffs holding the Toronto Maple Leafs off by 3 points while posting a 32-42-6 record. In the playoffs the North Stars looked poised for another run again as they jumped out to a 3-1 series lead over the first place Detroit Red Wings. However, the Red Wings would shutout the Stars in the next 2 games to force a 7th game, which they won 5-2 to end, any hope of another magical run for the North Stars.

Season Summary: When Norm Green first purchased the North Stars he was though of the savior of Minnesota hockey. However, playing at the outdated Met Center it was clear changes had to be made to keep the team afloat. Green asked the city of Bloomington to add 200 more seats to the 15,000-seat Met Center. However, when Bloomington balked Green sought other places for the North Stars to play. Although the Target Center in Minneapolis seemed like a viable alternative Norm Green seemed unreceptive as if he wanted to move the team to another market. As the season wound down the worst fear of North Stars fans would come through as it was announced the team would move to Dallas. As the talk of the move surrounded the team the North Stars struggled down the stretch missing the playoffs while finishing in 5th place with a record of 36-38-10.

Division Finish: 3rd - Central Division

Season Summary: After 26 mediocre years in Minnesota the North Stars moved to Dallas becoming the Stars after flittering with the notion of the name Lone Stars. On October 5th the State of Texas finally had a NHL team of its own, after years of Minor League Hockey and the WHA's Houston Aeros, as the Stars beat the Detroit Red Wings at Reunion Arena 6-4. The Stars would go on to have a solid first season in Dallas as Mike Modano scored 50 goals with the Stars finishing in 3rd place in the Central Division with a solid 42-29-13. In the playoffs the Stars got off to a fast start sweeping the St. Louis Blues in 4 straight games. However, in the 2nd round they would be upset by the Vancouver Canucks in 5 games.

Season Summary: The Stars second season in Dallas would be delayed by a 4-month lockout that wiped out half the season. Stanley Cup Champions

Record: 51-19-12
Points: 114
Home Record: 29-8-4
Away Record: 22-11-8
Division Finish: 1st - Pacific Division
Conference Finish: 1st - Western Conference
NHL Finish: 1st
Season Summary: After falling short in the Conference Finals the Stars add another weapon by signing Brett Hull who finishes 2nd on the team in scoring despite missing 22 games as the Stars are moved to the Pacific Division and repeat as President's Trophy Champions with a 51-19-12 record. Entering the playoffs with a Stanley Cup or bust mind set the Stars sweep the Edmonton Oilers in 4 straight. However, it was not as easy as it appeared as all 4 games were decided by 1 goal including the finale on Joe Nieuwendyk's goal in a 3rd overtime. In the 2nd round the Stars would take the first 2 games at home against the St. Louis Blues but found themselves in a must win situation in Game 5 as the Blues won the next 2 in St. Louis in overtime. Eddie Belfour would come up big in Game 5 as the Stars won 3-1. They would go on to take Game 6 in overtime on a goal by Mike Modano. In the Conference Finals for the 2nd straight year the Stars were matched up against the Colorado Avalanche. Both teams yielded nothing as ten series was tied at 2 after 4 games. However, in Game 5 in Dallas the Stars found themselves facing elimination as the Avalanche erupted for 7 goals. Needing a big road win the Stars forced a 7th game with a dominating 4-1 victory in Game 6. Back home for Game 7 the Stars but away the Avalanche with another 4-1 victory. In the Stanley Cup Finals the Stars and Buffalo Sabres would battle evenly through 4 games before Eddie Belfour put forth his best effort in the postseason to take Game 5 at home 2-0. With the cup 1 win away the Stars and Sabres battled deep into overtime tied at 1, in Buffalo before Brett Hull scored a disputed goal with 5 minuets left in the 3rd OT to deliver the Stars their first Stanley Cup. With a NHL record 6 game winning goals Joe Nieuwendyk was awarded the Conn Smythe for playoff MVP.

Stars Shine in Texas!

JUNE 19, 1999 - BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Dallas Stars were almost too exhausted to lift the Stanley Cup -- and the Buffalo Sabres were almost too mad to let go.

Brett Hull scored at 14:51 of the third overtime, putting a rebound over weary Dominik Hasek as the Dallas Stars won Hockey's biggest prize as much by exhaustion as execution, outlasting the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals Saturday night.

It was the second-longest overtime game in Stanley Cup finals history and the longest to decide a winner -- and a disputed winner at that. The angry Sabres protested that Hull's left skate was in the crease as he scored to make Dallas the first Sun Belt city to hoist the Stanley Cup. When Lord Stanley paid $50 for the cup in 1892, he likely didn't envision it being won by a team located much closer to Mexico than Canada. The OT lasted 54:51, the longest in the finals except for Edmonton's 3-2 victory over Boston in Game 1 in 1990 that lasted 55:13.

"We had nothing left. They had nothing left. Thank God it's over," Stanley Cup playoff MVP Joe Nieuwendyk of Dallas said.

The game may have been over. The arguing was only beginning.

The Sabres refused to leave their locker room for 20 minutes, claiming the goal shouldn't have counted. When they heard NHL officials supervisor Bryan Lewis' explanation that Hull had possession of the puck both inside and outside of the crease, they almost couldn't believe it.

It was the NHL's worst nightmare -- to have one of the most exciting, if lowest scoring, finals in years decided by a controversial play. TV replays showed Hull's left skate in the crease before he shot.

"Can he have a foot in (the crease) and the goal count? Yes," Lewis said. "He played the puck from his foot to his stick and shot and scored. He was deemed to be in control and possession of the puck even if a skate was in crease."

Lewis said this very scenario -- a skate being in the crease but a goal being counted -- was contained in a March 25 memorandum to officials.

The Sabres countered by insisting that Hull did not have control of the puck. Hasek, who made 48 saves, was among the most upset.

"It makes me very mad. It could happen any time during the season, but if it happens in a Stanley Cup Final ... I still cannot believe it," he said. "I don't understand what the video judge is doing. Maybe he was in the bathroom. Maybe he was sleeping. Maybe he doesn't know the rule."

After seeing the replay, Hasek said, "I was going to put my jersey on and go back out."

Hull replied, "All I know is, I'm not going back out there."

The Sabres' Joe Juneau suggested the NHL didn't want the embarrassment of restarting a game that everybody thought had ended, saying, "It was a gutless move."

Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said, "That's your worst nightmare right there. We're going to protest, of course. Anybody could see it. It wasn't a goal. All we want is a review. They said it was a good goal."

Hull ended the intense, suspenseful game with his third goal of the series and third career overtime playoff goal. Hasek, outplayed again by Ed Belfour, went to his chest to bounce on a shot by Jere Lehtinen, who scored the first goal four hours before. But the puck rebounded into the slot to Hull, who lifted it into the net from the right side of the crease.

"You can have all the other ones, this is the biggest for me," Hull said. "It is unbelievable."

Hull's name goes on the ancient trophy with that of his father, Bobby, who won an NHL title with Chicago in 1961.

"It is unbelievable starting out as a kid growing up in that shadow and finally making a niche for myself," Brett Hull said. "This finally completes the cycle. I hope someday my son or grandkids can do it."

Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said Hull played in the last two games with a left knee that needs reconstructive surgery and two injured groin muscles.

"He may be rehabbing when the next season starts," Hitchcock said. "He played on one knee and no groins the last three shifts. He limped to the front of the net. He limped into the corner. ... I'm glad there isn't a Game 7, because I don't know where this team would be (physically) if we did."

Dallas' delight at winning a Stanley Cup only six years after the Minnesota North Stars relocated there probably is surpassed only by Buffalo's disappointment at losing -- again. The Buffalo Bills lost four consecutive Super Bowls earlier in the 1990s, once when Scott Norwood's game-winning field goal attempt against the New York Giants sailed wide.

Once again Saturday, Buffalo was wide right. Joe Juneau, Michael Peca and Alexei Zhitnik all missed excellent scoring chances from the third period on that sailed to the right by Belfour. Of course, the odds also were in Dallas' favor as soon as the game went into overtime. The last six teams with a chance to win the cup in overtime have done so. Also, the road team has won the last eight Stanley Cup finals overtime games.

The Stars are the fourth team to win a Stanley Cup in a game decided in multiple overtimes, joining Colorado (1996), Detroit (1950) and Chicago (1934). With 22 goals -- 13 by Dallas and nine by Buffalo -- it was the lowest-scoring six-game final round in Stanley Cup history. The record of 25 was set by the New York Rangers (14) and Toronto (11) in 1940.

"Today is the happiest day of my life," said Belfour, who stopped 53 shots, allowing only Stu Barnes' second-period goal. "It is just unbelievable. I'm just happy to be on this team and get a chance to play on such a great team. ... I am a hardworking goaltender and am happy to be on this team."

Mike Modano assisted on the Stars' final five goals of the series. Modano led the Stars with 23 points in the playoffs, two more than Nieuwendyk, whose six game-winning playoff goals matched the record Joe Sakic set with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996.

In the playoffs the Stars would roll through the first 2 rounds needing just 5 games in each series to knock of the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks to reach the Western Conference Finals. In a rematch with the Colorado Avalanche the Stars found themselves in another Game 7, which they won 3-2 surviving a late flurry by the Avalanche. In the Stanley Cup Finals the Stars would get off to a rocky start as they were blown out by the Devils in New Jersey 7-3. After taking Game 2 on a late 3rd period goal by Brett Hull the Stars were unable to do anything at home scoring just 2 goals the Devils grabbed a 3-1 series lead. Facing elimination in Game 5 the Stars continued to struggle, as they were unable to get the puck past Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. However, Eddie Belfour was able to blank the Devils and the game went into a 3rd overtime where Mike Modano broke the scoreless dead lock to give the Stars some hope. Back home for Game 6 the Stars and Devils continued to play tight defensive hockey as they game went into overtime tied at 1. However, midway through the 2nd overtime Jason Arnott of the Devils beat Belfour on a one timer to end the Stars Stanley Cup reign.

Game 5 would also go to overtime as the Stars took a 3-2 series lead on a goal by Kurt Muller. In Game 6 in Edmonton the stars would not need overtime as they advanced to the 2nd round with a 3-1 win. However, in the 2nd round the Stars would suddenly run out of gas as they were swept by the St. Louis Blues in 4 straight games.

Season Summary: Moving into the brand new American Airlines Center the Stars got off to a slow start as goalie Eddie Belfour struggled through one of his worst season facing the prospect of Free Agency. To shake thing up Coach Ken Hitchcock was fired, and replaced by Rick Wilson. However, the Stars continued to play catch up. With the prospect of missing the playoffs the Stars traded 1999 Conn Smythe winner Joe Nieuwendyk, and Jamie Langenbrunner to the New Jersey Devils for Randy McKay and Jason Arnott who scored the heartbreaking game winning goal in the 2000 Cup Finals. The Stars would go on to post a respectable record of 35-28-13-5. However, it would not be enough for the playoffs as they fell 4 points short of the final playoff spot. Following the season Rick Wilson would go back to being an assistant coach as the Stars brought in Dave Tippett.

Home Record: 28-5-6-2
Away Record: 18-12-9-2
Division Finish: 1st - Pacific Division
Conference Finish: 1st - Western Conference
NHL Finish: 2nd
Season Summary: With the departure of Goalie Eddie Belfour the Stars gave the job to Marty Turco who had one of the best seasons for a goalie in NHL history posting the lowest GAA since 1940 at 1.76. However missing 18 games late in the season likely cost him a shot at the Vezina. Nonetheless the Stars posted the best record in the Western Conference at 46-17-15-4, along the way two-way star Jere Lehtinen won his 3rd Selke Trophy. In the playoffs the Stars met a familiar foe in the Edmonton Oilers Once again the Oilers would prove pesky winning 2 of the first 3 games. However, the Stars would prove the better team again by winning the next 3 games to take the series in 6 games. The Stars second round series against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim got off to an unbelievable start as the game went deep into overtime tied at 3. However, Ducks Goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 60 shots as the Ducks scored early in the 5th OT. Game 2 would be more of the same as the Ducks stunned the Stars in overtime. Desperately needing a win the Stars bounced back to take Game 3 in Anaheim. However, the Ducks would take a 3-1 series lead by breaking a scoreless tie late in the 3rd period of Game 4. In Game 5 the Stars finally solved Giguere by scoring 4 goals to keep their playoff hopes alive. However, the Stars dreams of a return trip to the Stanley Cup Finals would end in heartbreak fashion as the Ducks broke a 3-3 tie with 1:06 left in Game 6, on a goal by Sandi Ozolinsh.
