Local/School History:
Avalon was settled in the 1860's and was named by William John, an early settler. A Post Office was opened in 1881, closed in 1907, and re-opened in 1937. Avalon had a school by 1884. A one room school house was built about half a mile north of town in 1887. Another school building was built in 1895 where the J. P. Griffith gym is located. This school building burned down and was rebuilt prior to 1916. The old brick school building was built by the WPA around 1935 and the gymnasium was built about 1938. Avalon ISD was established in 1936. Later, a new brick high school building was built next to the old school building.
Note: Six-Man football started in Texas around 1938 and sanctioned by UIL since 1972.
