Go Dawgs

I agree, the only problem is that some people take it waaaay too far. I don't take it seriously for the most part(except when people start bashing the individual players). Having said that, I can, and often do :D , enjoy bashing idiotic posters. I guess to each his own, right?

Go read some of these recent articles from Coach Jack Welsh about their Aledo game and the stadium situation. They do not want to face LC. I think, like last year, they thought they'd be playing a different team. They thought last year they would get LC and they got Heights. They thought this year they would get NB and they got LC. He seems like a coach who looks ahead. I know he had to have been looking ahead to have had the close game with Aledo. I'm sorry I didn't link to the article-- but direct quote is below. Sounds like he knows what's coming-- can't stop the inevitable.

“Their running back is a great running back,” said Copperas Cove head coach Jack Welch, joking that he might have to “bring out the National Guard come out and help” to shut him down completely.

Out of whack stat- Opponents have rushed for 999 yards on the Bulldawgs in their four playoff games

I say at the end of the game they will have given up 1300 yards through the playoffs. How embarassing for a state semifinalist. The defense for LC while still giving up a lot of rushing yards has given up about 600 yards on the ground-- that's still 400 less than Cove. Get the towels ready, if you think it hurts to lose in the state championship once-- think about twice.

Wow - I dont think the Cove was over looking Aledo - And it is funny that your from a team that can't even come close to beating Aledo-
You know what I think is funny Rider can not even get past our district when it come to the Play-offs actually if they were in our District they would never see the Play-offs- They would sitting home every year- But yet your posting this-

" We'll be there next year to claim what is rightfully ours. Count on it- ROHO '08 4A D.II State Champs There will be no stopping the Beaver"

Welch will always talk highly, maybe even overly so about the opponent. He implied that Tuloso-Midway out of Corpus could have beaten Cove.
999 yards is a lot to surrender in four games, but look at the strengths of the four opponents. Waxahachie had a dual threat QB, same w/ Samuell, the QB from Boyd was averaging 7.7 ypg coming into the game, and the Aledo QB is similar, but he could actually see over the line to throw. I agree that 250 yards per game allowed by the defense is too much, but give credit to those who got those yards, too. Rodgers will get his yards. The question is will he get enough. If LC had one more offensive weapon outside of Rodgers, I'd give them the nod right now, but they don't. The game WILL come down to Cove containing the ONE offensive weapon LC has and LC containing the TWO that Cove has. I think LC has the tougher task, but that does not mean they can't get it done.

Cove showed a nice 1-2-3 punch with #28 doing very very good last game. If Vital doesn't get hurt Cove might lose because the line wasn't opening alot of holes, #28 was making alot out of nothing.

Lamar fans keep pointing to the fact that cove has allowed so many rushing yards in the playoffs. That's all fine and dandy, but ya'll need to wake up and face reality. Cove plays a "bend, don't break" defense. They give up lots of yards, but don't give up points. The defense is great at making adjustments. Just look at last week's game against Aledo...9-0 at the end of the first quarter. They didn't get a single touchdown the rest of the game....And that's against a multi-dimensional team, with multiple weapons and an amazing QB in Lofton. We already know who Lamar's #1 receiver and rusher is. Rodgers will have a lot of yards, maybe even a touchdown or two. But he won't be enough against Cove. We'll control him just fine.

Another thing about you ignorant Lamar fans.... Ya'll keep harping about Griffin and Vital being all we got. Well, that's just not true. We have lots of weapons and are very capable of spreading the ball around. Stop Vital, stop Griffin-that's just fine with us. We'll reload, make adjustments, and come right back at you and SCORE! You have no idea what the Cove offense is truly capable of, but you'll find out Saturday night. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lamar up at the end of the 1st quarter, maybe even the 1st half. The simple truth is that your beloved Mustangs just won't be able to hang with the Dawgs for 48 minutes. Cove wins. End of discussion. ;)

Are they playing another game on Saturday? Our D has shut down better offenses. We'll shut yours down, too. Again, with your midget O-line and track guys.

Rag tag? Coming from a Copperas Cove fan? Everything about Copperas Cove's team is rag tag...your city, too for that matter. It's like a huge trailer park. Thank God I've only driven through.

I just wanted to point out it's hardly just Cove fans acting like idiots. <_<

COPPERAS COVE – Sean Robertson, Nathan Kepler, Sean Doherty, Jerry Hill and Anthony Mackey Jr. gathered in a small conference room on Tuesday afternoon at the Cove athletic annex with looks of surprise across their faces. They were all a bit curious as to why head coach Jack Welch had asked them to step out of the locker room.

After all, it's not exactly everyday someone wants to talk to five offensive linemen.

"People don't really talk about us so much," Hill said breaking the silence as they all took a seat. "We don't expect much recognition for just going out and doing our jobs."

Robertson, Kepler, Doherty, Hill and Mackey aren't household names to most Cove football fans, but they have been instrumental to the team's success. Just ask anyone on the team from the coaching staff down to the players.

"I couldn't have accomplished anything without my guys up front," 2,000-yard running back Troy Vital said. "Give them credit for opening up holes for me and sustaining blocks. I couldn't have done it without them."

Strong words of praise from a kid who earned a football scholarship to attend Baylor University next year.

The five men up front for Cove this year have been dominant, an adjective they try to achieve every week. Behind their offensive line, the Bulldawgs have rushed for more than 3,300 yards and averaged more than 7.5 yards per carry. In their last two playoff games, Cove has allowed just two sacks against fast and athletic opposing defenses.

"Let me tell you something, our offensive line is something else," Welch said. "Against these physical and fast defenses like the ones we've faced, you don't win without having good performances from your offensive line."

Surprisingly, Doherty, Robertson, Hill, Kepler and Mackey aren't huge, as far as offensive linemen go. Their average weight is a generous 256, yet they have been able to consistently push heavier defenders back, off the line of scrimmage.

"Our philosophy going into any game, is that we need to dominate," said Robertson. "Our thing is to dominate, no matter what."

Yet, it's not just about domination for these five guys in the trenches. Domination is only part of the story.

Doherty, Robertson, Hill, Kepler and Mackey communicate, and do it well. In the conference room, they all finished each others sentences and thoughts. Whenever one guy lost his train of thought, another one was right there to pick up the slack.

"We're able to work together extremely well," Doherty said. "We communicate and talk a lot when we're out there."

That communication extends off the field too. The five men are all a bit different, but their personalities mesh well. Kepler and Doherty are on the quiet and pensive side. Mackey and Hill are the goofballs who lighten everyone one up, while Robertson is the leader who makes sure everyone stays positive and focused.

On Saturdays, they all go over to Robertson's house to eat and watch the game. They'll cook burgers, chicken, steak and hot dogs. When asked who ate the most, everyone pointed to someone different before they all broke out laughing.

Robertson said he usually finished four burgers while Mackey said he could usually get down three. When Hill claimed he only ate two, Doherty quipped that four patties on a single bun counts for more than just one burger.

"I think it just clicks for all of us," Kepler said. "We all seem to be on the same page."

Nowhere was that more evident than against the Aledo Bearcats in Saturday's semi-final matchup. Aledo's band was loud, and played almost every single down when the Bulldawgs were on offense. It made it very difficult to hear on the field.

From the shotgun formation, quarterback Robert Griffin III actually had to walk up to his linemen so they could hear the play and the snap count. Doherty, Kepler, Robertson, Hill and Mackey used hand signals and pointing to call out blocking assignments.

"It was really hard to hear anything," Mackey said. "It was by far the loudest game of the season."

The Bulldawgs allowed just one sack, for a loss of just one yard.

Still, there were no post-game interviews or scouts raving about their ability, just appreciative teammates and coaches along with another Copperas Cove win.

"We know they can't do it without us," said Mackey. "They need us to do the dirty work up front, and everyone in the locker room is real appreciative of that."

In the conference room, Doherty, Robertson, Hill, Kepler and Mackey said they wouldn't have it any other way either. They love their role.

Robertson loves being physical, Mackey said he enjoys seeing a teammate break a long run and knowing he was a part of it. Doherty likes the courtesy donuts and breakfast burritos brought by Vital as a token of appreciation.

"We want people to say we dominated," Robertson said. "There has been no one this year that we've gone against that we haven't been able to handle."

"Nobody's stopped us," Hill added. "We've only stopped ourselves."

That's a nice article and all, but it doesn't change the fact that your line got absolutely dominated by Aledo, Waxahachie, Brownwood, and Waco. If you didn't have a track guy lining up under center, he probably would have been sacked 50 times this season...not to mention the fact that #28 had to make all his own holes last week. Not a very good line.

When you see our line, you'll understand how Jacquizz can gain so many yards. He has a bunch of real men blocking for him.

We WILL control both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Actually dude, LC is not a one man show. I would run him every play until someone stopped him. A good coach knows this. LC can pass if they have to. They are not one dimensional. For some reason central Tx teams think so. I think CC is one dimensional with Griffin. Vital has a few yards but without Griffin you would not be at the state final. CC has not faced a defense as quick and fast as LC. Waco, Brownwood none of them is as fast teamwise. Austin LBJ had three potential D1 track men on their team and they had hell. Ask them. LBJ was not as weak as people thought. I thought New Braunfels was a weaker team than LBJ.

yes, but who do they pass to?

Rodgers is their top receiver.

By Evan Mohl
Killeen Daily Herald

COPPERAS COVE – When the Miami Dolphins became the first and only team in NFL history to go undefeated for an entire season in 1972, their defense allowed a league-low 171 points and 3,297 yards. Yet ask anyone to name someone on that stingy defense, and most people would struggle.

Even legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry famously remarked, "I don't recall any of their names, but they are a matter of great concern."

Thus the Miami defense earned the title "The No-Name Defense."

At the beginning of the year, Bulldawgs defensive coordinator Reb Brock told his players that story. He talked about the selfless way that legendary Dolphins defense played. They weren't the best individual athletes at their respective positions – no single player on the defense has made the Hall of Fame – but they played together as a unit.

Brock challenged the Bulldawgs defense to use the No-Name Defense as an example, and the players have responded.

"We have so much heart and we play hard just like that Dolphins team," senior defensive lineman Anthony Gonzales said. "Nobody knows who we are. People don't know what we're about, they don't really know what we do."

So far, they've done pretty well. The Bulldawgs are playing for a state championship on Saturday behind a defense that has held opponents to an average of 17 points per game this season.

And they've accomplished it without a true marquee player or a blue-chip prospect.

"Our philosophy keeps individuals from being pointed out or getting big heads," said linebacker and leading tackler Tanner Brock, son of the defensive coordinator. "It keeps us all together playing on the same level, playing for each other and not ourselves."

During the playoffs, the Bulldawgs defense has faced some of the best athletes in the state: Waxahachie's Boomer Collins, Dallas Samuell's DaWaylon Cook, McKinney Boyd's Daryn Alves and Aledo's Cole Loftin. All players are – or project as – top recruits.

As a result, the Bulldawgs defense has allowed a lot of yards, especially on the ground. In the state semifinal, the Aledo Bearcats rushed for 274 yards, 207 of which came from quarterback Cole Loftin.

In their four playoff games, Cove has given up 999 rushing yards, an average of nearly 250 yards per game.

"We've allowed some our opponents to rack up 200 yards rushing, but we're playing great people," said Cove head coach Jack Welch. "You don't get to this level without playing great people."

Yet Cove has been able to find a way where other defenses have failed to at least contain those players or keep them out of the end zone.

The Bulldawgs have limited playoff opponents to an average of 21 points per contest – a respectable number considering all the great players Cove has faced.

"Our thing on defense this year is 11 men doing their job and relentless effort," Brock said. "When it gets down there near that goal line, it's that kind of time more than ever to man up and work even harder.

"The only stat that matters at the end of the day is how many times you let your opponent into the end zone. We've been pretty good at that."

The Bulldawgs don't seem to be fazed when things aren't going as planned defensively. They get back up, get in the huddle and put the last play behind them.

Against Aledo, the Bearcats got into the Cove red zone twice in the second quarter. Both times, the Bulldawg defense stepped up and thwarted the drive. Aledo settled for field-goal attempts, which kept the Bulldawgs within striking distance.

"We keep getting back in the huddle and we keep playing hard." Welch said. "That's the key. What we want to focus on is getting them stopped and getting the ball turned over to our offense."

Perhaps most impressively, the Bulldawgs have been able to do all of this with an incredibly young team. Cove has just four seniors starting on defense. On some downs, the Bulldawgs only have three seniors on the field.

Brock attributes Cove's ability to perform well with young players to a coaching staff that works with players from junior high all the way through high school. A freshman learns and practices the same plays and schemes as a senior. So, when a young player joins the team, he's ready to step in and play without losing a beat.

Gonzales agreed with Brock, but added: "We're a brotherhood. We don't have egos. We are always there for each other so we never quit or stop on each other. We keep going."

If they continue that way, the Bulldawg defense just might force fans to remember their names.
