- 2003 [Anaheim wins series 4-2]
Game 1 - The Stars came into their first ever series against Anaheim, looking to win their 2nd Cup in 5 seasons, and after the Mighty Ducks swept the No. 2 Detroit Red Wings it looked as if the Cup was there for the taking for Dallas. But Anaheim showed exactly why they swept the Red Wings in Game 1. And a long game 1 it was. Tied 3-3 after 60 minutes, the crowd at the AAC didn't know they were in for another 4 full periods of hockey before Anaheim scored the game winner early in the 5th overtime period for the 4-3 victory. Anaheim thought they won game 1 in the 3rd overtime period but the goal was disallowed as the net was off when the puck went into the net.
Game 2 - Down 1-0 in the series, Dallas found themselves in an almost must win situation in Game 2. And up 2-1 late in game 2, Dallas looked as if they would tie the series up at one game as they did in the quarterfinals against Edmonton. But a goal with less than a minute to go in the period would tie the game for the Ducks. Luckly for Stars fans, they didn't have to endure 5 overtime periods before losing in game 2. Anaheim came out quick and scored not even two minutes into the 1st overtime period to take game 2, 3-2.
Game 3 - In what Dallas couldn't do in game 2, the Stars were able to hold on for the game 2 victory by a 2-1 score.
Game 4 - The low scoring affair continued in game 4 as both teams remained scoreless after two periods. But once again, a late goal would give Anaheim the victory and a strangle hold on the series. The Ducks won game 4, 1-0.
Game 5 - Finally, the Stars offense was able to come alive in the fifth game of the series was rookie Niko Kapanen led the Stars with two goals in the game and brought Dallas back into the series. Dallas left the AAC, with a 4-1 win over the Mighty Ducks.
Game 6 - Dallas found themselves trailing 3-2 late in game 6 before the Stars tied the game up at 3-3. But, as had been the case the entire series, a bad exchange behind the net gave Sandis Ozolinsh the chance to net home the series winner with only 1:06 remaining in the game. Anaheim won game 6, 4-3 and the series 4 games to 2. - 2008 [Dallas leads series 3-1]
Game 1 - The defending Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks, came into game 1 with the expectations of running all over the Stars. However, it was completely opposite in the first game. After a solid first 10 minutes to the game, the Ducks fell apart and continued to take penalty after penalty through out the game. And Dallas made them pay. 11:25 into the series, Steve Ott deflected a Stephan Robidas shot from the boards, in through the 5 hole of Giguere, to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. A little over 6 minutes after, Dallas again found themsleves on the powerplay. Mike Modano took a hard hit to set up the play as Steve Ott grabbed the puck, passed it back to Robidas, who passed it to Richards, before finding Loui Eriksson all alone in the slot and the 2-0 lead. Dallas had had a picture perfect first period. And in their strongest period of the regular season for the Stars, Dallas continued their dominance. Once again, on the powerplay, crisp passing led to the 3-0 lead for Dallas. Morrow found Ribeiro behind the net, before again finding a wide open Lehtinen in the slot. Brenden Morrow would add on another in the 2nd period, again on the powerplay, for the 4-0 lead. In the 3rd, Marty Turco kept the Ducks off the boards despite only a couple chances from Anaheim. And it would be the Stars who would leave the Honda Center, with the 1-0 lead.
Game 2 - Special teams win you hockey games, and much like in game 1, it did again for the Stars in game 2. Two more powerplay goals for Dallas in game 2, propelled the Stars to a 2-0 series lead in their quarterfinal match up with Anaheim. First off though it was Mike Ribeiro, breaking away on an intercepted pass, who would give Dallas the 1-0 lead after he back handed it past Giguere early in the 1st period. In the second period, the Dallas powerplay went to work. Robidas's shot and rebound was grabbed by long-time Dallas Star Jere Lehtinen, who backed it into the empty net to give the Stars a 2-0 lead in game 2. However, game 2 was nearly as easy for the Stars as it was in game 1. Teemu Selanne ended Marty Turco's playoff shut out streak after nearly six straight periods dating back to the 7 minute mark of the 3rd period in game 7 against Vancouver. Travis Moen then tied the game after streaking past rookie Matt Niskanen and sliding it in past Marty Turco. In the 3rd, and after several penalty kills, Mike Modano showed he still had a little in him after slapping a powerplay shot past Giguere to give Dallas the 3-2 lead early in the period. 55 seconds later, it was Brad Richards streaking in and snipping it through Giguere's 5-hole to restore Dallas' two-goal lead. Loui Eriksson put any doubt to the game away as he one timed a pass from Joel Lundqvist past Giguere and gave the Stars a 5-2 victory.
Game 3 - Knowing their best had yet to show up on the ice, Anaheim showed why they are the defending Cup Champions by taking it to Dallas in the first period. Three goals on just seven shots sent the buzzed American Airlines Center, Blacked Out crowd into silence. Chris Pronger added his second goal of the night to give Anaheim a 4-0 lead after two periods. And despite Morrow's two goals in the third period, Anaheim would cruise to a 4-2 victory over the Stars to get them back into the series down just one game.
Game 4 - After a 4-2 loss in game 3 to the Ducks, Dallas was the team that faced the pressure in game 4, for the first time in the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. And Marty Turco did not disappoint to the sold out American Airlines Center. After a Trevor Daley goal was disallowed, Joe Lundqvist would make Anaheim pay on a turnover by scoring the games first goal. Anaheim struck in the 2nd period, but it would be taken back for a kicking motion. With a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period, the Stu Barnes show took over. Midway through the third, Mike Modano found Barnes behind the Anaheim defense and off to the races Stu went. And 5 hole he also went, scoring to give Dallas that very important 2-goal lead. In defense mode, Dallas would once again take advantage of an Anaheim mishab late in the game when Stu Barnes stole the puck and broke in with Steve Ott, on a 2 on 0. Stu's pass to Otter for the goal would all but seal the deal for Dallas as they held a 3-0 lead with less than 4 minutes to go. Anaheim would score with 7.8 seconds to go to end the shut out bid for Turco but it was Dallas who would leave the AAC with a 3-1 win and a 3-1 series lead.
Game 5 - With a chance to knock off the defending Cup Champions, Dallas came out strong but for the first time in the series J.S. Giguere was on top of his game and came to play. With time and time again one timer saves, Corey Perry went to work. Streaking down the right side, a slap shot would go 5 hole on Marty Turco to give Anaheim the 1-0 lead. Right back, however Matti Norstrom would score for Dallas to tie the game at 1 apiece after 1 period of play. In the second, though, it would be Anaheim who took control. And midway through the period, Ryan Getzlaf would give Anaheim the lead they would not lose the rest of the way. With a 2-1 lead into the second period, Anaheim seemed to remember that a game is 3 periods, not 2. And for the first time in the series, beat the Stars in the 3rd period. With a 5 on 3, Teemu Selanne scored to give Anaheim their two goal lead. Even though, Mike Ribeiro scored right back, Anaheim added two more goals, including an empty netter, to give the Ducks a 5-2 win in Game 5 to remain alive.
