I'm not a republican or a democrat...... I will vote based on the current issues and standing of our country. and I long for the day that republicans and democrats alone don't completely control our country. I think having checks and balances is a good thing. but often we find that when these two work together to get something done it is often not beneficial for our country. then when we have issues that are pressing for society......there is always a fillibuster in place. enough ranting though.

john mccain's campaign has lost me. I really used to have a lot of respect for mccain's moderate personality. but I guess those blow ups on the senate floor were a preview of his my way or the highway personality. I guess texas senator john cornyn could tell you that too. and i certainly respect his military heritage as his father was a four star admiral and I believe his grandfather was as well. but his campaign has lost me. the smear tactics and sara/h palin made it easy for me not to vote for their ticket. I am troubled that our country can be easily divided with such simple rhetoric that lacks substance and reality. certainly they have rallied the right wing. this is one of the many things that republican colin powell said on meet the press(from USATODAY.COM) that I agree with.

Powell also said he was troubled that some Republicans -- he excluded McCain -- continue to say or allow others to say that Obama is a Muslim, when he is a Christian. Such rhetoric is polarizing, he said.

"He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America," Powell said. "Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president?

Powell said the nation's economic crisis provided a "final exam" of sorts for both candidates, suggested McCain had failed the test.

"I found that he was a little unsure as to how to deal with the economic problems that we were having," Powell said. "Almost every day there was a different approach to the problem and that concerned me, sensing that he doesn't have a complete grasp of the economic problems that we had."

Powell said McCain's choice of Palin raised questions about judgment.

"She's a very distinguished woman, and she's to be admired. But at the same time, now that we have had a chance to watch her for some seven weeks, I don't believe she's ready to be president of the United States, which is the job of the vice president," he said. "And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Sen. McCain made."

it's a tough job....the toughest single job in our nation. the past 8 years should give one evidence on the importance of the job. I want the person who is more qualified and more in touch with society...and that appears to be the democrat in this instance. Now I don't hold a magic ball. I don't know that great things will happen. but it certainly helps to have a smart person who knows what he/she is doing behind that desk/seal. lives are at stake here.
