The World Hockey Association was dealt a major blow Friday when two of the six teams confirmed for next season dropped out of the league, according to a report in the Toronto Star.
At a news conference in Toronto on June 9 the WHA announced that six cities had made commitments to play when the season begins in October. The Toronto Star is reporting that David Waronker, owner of the Orlando Seals and Jacksonville Barracudas of the Southern Hockey League, pulled the plug when he cancelled a transfer of ownership of the two teams to a prospective WHA owner. Waronker will keep the two teams in the SHL.
Waronker told the Toronto Star that he signed a letter of intent with Calgary businessman Max Chambers. The letter called for Chambers' company, Star Leaf Sports, to purchase the two teams for $3.4 million. Chambers was also to provide a deposit of $100,000 by June 2.
According to Waronker, he hasn't spoken to Chambers since the letter of intent was signed and considers the deal off.
''They have some good people and it seems that have a good business plan in place, but they should probably start in two years,'' Waronker told the Toronto Star. ''If they rush into this thing for next season they're probably going to fail.''
Halifax, Quebec City, Detroit and Dallas are the only remaining confirmed teams in the WHA. Toronto and Hamilton remain franchises in good standing pending the completion of lease negotiations prior to the July 10, 2004 free agent and entry level draft.
