Coaches, I need your help.My son played on the freshman team at a 5A school, although he is pretty athletic his freshman debute was still just above average(only 1 player of the game award of which i am very proud of) and the team ended up with a less than winning season. The varsity team had a winless season in fact have not won but 3 games in the last 4 yrs.
For the upcoming season the head coach wants to move my son along with 9 or 10 other freshman past J.V to varsity.I think that he should play J.V to get his body and mind ready for the last 2 yrs of varsity because of the opposing competition.Long story short what are some of the determining factors for throwing a youngster (5ft 8 165lbs)into that big world of 5A varsity football.

First, a pat on the back for you and for your interest and concern for your son.
Of course this reply is made with no knowledge of your son other than height and weight.
If he is a defensive back with decent speed he might be O.K. There are some offensive backs
in the 165 pound range who are very good and can play.
Usually a 5-A Varsity team will have 3 to 5 Soph on the Varsity and maybe 2 of them see time playing in games.
It makes sence to play a lot of downs on a JV rather that stand on the sidelines at a Varsity game.
It's all up to the player. How tough-minded is he, and does he want to compete with the older boys.
There is an old addage in football: You will loose as many games as you have Sophs on the team. There are exceptions.
Sounds like the coach wants to build for 2010. Leave it up to the player and the coach.....they might know better.
