So does anyone else's JV squad suffer the problem of having all the talent sucked away to varsity? Last year we had a pretty good freshmen QB who is now on varsity as a sophomore. That along with last year's JV QB also moving up to varsity left this year's squad without a QB. A running back was converted into a QB with anticipated performance (it got to the point where I would do the echo yell "NNNNNOOOOOOoooooo....." whenever he would throw a pass).

Sometimes the JV squad looks like they have had the life sucked out of them. Sometimes they look like they have gotten used to practicing against varsity players and pop off some really good plays (on the ground of course). I never played JV and when watching the freshmen last year I used to think so badly of the JV because I thought there were games they should have won, it never even occurred to me to think about the fact that they may have been, in my opinion, a bit hamstrung as well. Thoughts?

Thanks to great depth and double dippers (players who play JV but suit out on varsity) Carrolls squads have a good bit of talent leftover for JVs.

We dropped a heartbreaker to Plano Thursday 12-15 their favor. We still had some QB issues but there was a new backup QB who got into the game and completely took over the offense and directed it like a pro. I hope he gets to run the offense from now own, he made some good passes, when the defense shut down the receivers he would run like a runningback forcing the defense to play honest, I loved that. Fingers crossed for next week. *sigh*

Gee, I thought that the JV team was to help promote the varsity squad and
not be-'what's left over goes to jv squad!' Been a few years now!

I don't know very much about how JV works (I never played JV in high school so this is my first real exposure to it). The Varsity head coach has said on more than one occassion something very similar to the sentiment you expressed but clearly the bulk of the talent was placed on the Varsity squad at my nephew's school (there are a number of sophmores who made Varsity who did well as freshmen).

The JV squad suffers at the QB position as a consequence (having had to convert a couple of running backs into QBs as a result). My high school's JV had their own QB who eventually moved up and that was always the case. My high school coach wanted to season a few players before exposing them to an all varsity level of play. There were even some players who played for both the JV and Varsity squads. We (the Varsity squad) had our own scout team separate from the JV squad, though we periodically scrimmaged the JV squad when the head coach wanted to see how some of his subvarsity players were doing in preparation for next season.

The result was a string of winning seasons with players who had good game experience (choking in a tight district race or a playoff game was always such an embarrassment). I can't say I can see the entire view the head coach at my nephew's school has but I have faith in him and I don't place my faith in others very often.

Think of this topic as a head coach would. Sure he wants the best 22 on the field for the varsity, but he also wants as many kids playing in games as he can - for future help.

At my school we have the;

Freshman Team
The Sophmore Team
The Junior Varsity
and
The varsity team

A few years ago before we had the third H.S. open up we had two Fr. teams.

This set up is used by most of the teams in the Dist. so they all get at least 8 games per season.

Years ago there was only the JV and Varsity. Guys who were TOO OLD, Failing or just general screwups played JV. One year we had 4 guys who were over 21 on the JV - they were ex-military. Some of them were really tough. In 1948 TCU had lots of Veterans playing - one was baldheaded.

Well\at our high school RHS Rockwall.... our coach doesnt liek to play sophmores on the varsity and as a result we have dominated at the JV level escpeacially because of our head coaches son, braden smith who porbably could of started on varsity and also our huge line which proabably oculd ahve at least 2 varsity starters at the center and RG posistion and others could of been great back ups.

wow last year (8th grade) we had an awesome 8th grade team (undefeated district champs) and yeah the best player, the QB went up to varsity while all of us have to stay down and fend for ourselves...we just beat brookshire royal tonight 8-0 so i think we might have a chance

I as a coach would rather have my JV Squad look forward to something to work for--Varsity Squad, rather than to plug in an injury hole. If the kid is good, let him "tear" up the JV opps and then 'move up.' Of course--MOO--My Own Opinion!!
