From staff reports

CENTERPOINT — The Bears of San Marcos Academy headed up through the Hill Country Thursday to take on the Centerpoint Pirates in both teams’ final scrimmage of the year.

The Pirates, a team from UIL District 3-A, found the Bears, a TAPPS Division II program, proved to be a pretty tough challenge.

It’s not everyday do you see a private school step outside the box and play a public school.

The Bears started the scrimmage strong behind the passing game of quarterback Aubrey Oswalt, but two late scores gave the Pirates a 3-1 touchdown advantage at the end of the three-hour session.

Each team was allowed 15 plays on each drive for three sessions, as the teams played two timed game quarters for game simulation.

This was SMA head coach Brian Gaylor's last chance to tinker with the depth chart and make those last evaluations before naming starters next Friday when the Bears open against the Medina Bobcats at home.

The Bears took first possession with Oswalt under center, and the team began its patented Slot T run game. Leading the way in the first possession was Jay Claiborne and Shane Boyer.

Oswalt would then connect with Cody Dietert for a wide-open, 17-yard pass. Oswalt later connected with Dietert for a 74-yard score up the middle to take the early advantage.

Oswalt would finish the day 5-for-6 and with 119 yards passing and no interceptions.

Defensively, the Bears stood tall early with the play of Chris Roberts and Sam Boothby. Younger players Dalton Wade, Estevan Gutierrez and Hunter Bilson also showed good effort and promise.

The Bears closed their first half of drives with Oswalt picking the ball away from Centerpoint’s Zack Gatti at the 5-yard line to end the Pirates’ threat.

The Bears would close the second half of the scrimmage with senior Anthony Richardson as the signal caller, as he completed 1-of-3 for 18 yards with one interception.

The running game got on track with Michael Young rolling off a 54-yard run. Richardson would bounce back from the interception with a 21-yard run of his own.

Mark Hamm ran the ball well for the Bears, but the hit of the scrimmage went to Michael Latham as he laid out a Pirate with a hit that had the home fans look away while the Bears’ coaching staff was jumping for joy.

Two late defensive breakdowns led to two late scores, but overall it was a good effort for SMA.

“You did a good job today and overall I am pleased with the effort,” Gaylor told his team after the scrimmage. “We grew as a team tonight.”
