Mavs send league-wide message with win over Lakers.
http://www.nba.com/games/20091030/DALLAL/recap.html
Bryan Chu, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday October 31, 2009 2:52AM

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive)--

"Just three nights removed from a jubilant ring ceremony, the Lakers came crashing down Friday in front of a soldout Staples Center.

The Mavericks used a spirited offensive onslaught in the third quarter, knocking out the defending champions 94-80, and at the same time sending a message to the rest of the league not to sleep on the team from the Lone Star state.

"Just because no one is talking about us," Dallas forward Shawn Marion said, "doesn't mean we're not on the map."

Added Dallas guard Jason Kidd: "It's a big win, character-wise for this team. The Lakers have had our number so it's a confidence booster for us. It helps us gain confidence on the road that we can play against the best."

The Mavericks kept the Lakers, who trailed the entire game, and especially Kobe Bryant offbalance all night. Bryant finished with a team-high 20 points, but it took him 19 shots. The Lakers, who settled for jumpshots most of the night, were down by as many as 22 in large part because of a paltry 39.5 percent shooting and 19 turnovers.

"Our rhythm wasn't good in the offense," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We didn't read this team well at all."

The defending champs found themselves down 18 heading into the fourth. The closest they would get was 80-68 after Marion, who finished with 18 points, scored eight straight.

It was in the third quarter, however, where the Mavericks closed the game out.

Dallas, which didn't shoot much better from the field (41.6 percent), outscored the Lakers 26-15 in the third and held Bryant to just two points. Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki scored nine of his game-high 21 in the third. Dallas' lead swelled to as many as 22 after guard Jose Barea walked in for a layup with under three minutes to go.

"We gave them one shot and put pressure on them on the other end," said Kidd, who had two points but collected 11 assists. "We knew coming into the fourth quarter that Kobe would put pressure on us. I think the zone helped us a little bit on that. We used a small lineup in the zone."

With the victory, Dallas broke a six-game losing streak to the Lakers, but more importantly atoned for a poor showing in their season-opening loss to the Wizards.

"We always take it personally after we get our a**** kicked," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.

All night, frustration set in for the Lakers, who were without All-Star Pau Gasol for the second night because of a right hamstring injury. Bryant and Ron Artest each picked up their first technical fouls of the season arguing with the referees. A few boos rained down on the Lakers in the third before a Bryant basket and a Josh Powell layup at the end of the quarter quelled the crowd and trimmed the Mavericks lead to 78-60.

A bright spot for the Lakers was reserve Shannon Brown, who finished with 12 points. In the second quarter, the Lakers were down as many as eight before Brown drained a pair of 3-pointers and a fallaway 18-foot jumper to bring the Lakers to within two at 37-35. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year Jason Terry answered, scoring 10 straight for the Mavs. Terry finished with 16 points.

"I wasn't happy with the second quarter," Jackson said. "We played scattered."

Artest was saddled with early foul trouble and couldn't get anything going for the second night in a row. Artest missed five of six shots and had four turnovers to go along with five fouls.

Playful Banter: Known for his entertaining comments, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban opined before the season that adding Artest to the Lakers may cause chemistry issues.

During pregame Friday, Artest said, "I want to ask him what team should I play for? What team best fits me? Should I not be here? Should I not be in the NBA? I posted it on Twitter. It didn't work. He didn't respond. ... I want him to tell me what I'm good for."

Cuban answered: "I think he'd be really good on my Dairy Queen team. I can get him really involved, teach him how to make a soft serve cone and get involved with the Blizzard. He can be a valuable addition."

Mission accomplished for Mavericks after L.A. sweep

http://www.nba.com/games/20091031/DALLAC/recap.html
Dan Arritt, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday November 1, 2009 1:29AM

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive)--

"The Dallas Mavericks came to Los Angeles hoping to turn the page on a dreadful opening-night performance.

Mission accomplished.

The Mavericks won their second game at Staples Center in as many nights, defeating the struggling Clippers 93-84 despite a career-high 27 points from Chris Kaman.

"It's hard to win in this place, it doesn't matter if you're playing the Lakers or the Clippers," said Dallas Coach Rick Carlisle.

"To get out of here with two [wins] is an accomplishment."

Although the Mavericks (2-1) were coming off an impressive 94-80 victory Friday night against the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, they weren't taking anything for granted against the winless Clippers. After all, the Clippers were 0-6 last season when Dallas came to town and was beaten by 11.

"There was no letdown," Carlisle said. "Our concentration and our attitude was great coming into this game. Our guys knew this was going to be a tough game and the Clippers are a much better team than their record reflects."

Dallas point guard Jason Kidd said his teammates kept it simple after the emotional win the night before.

"Everybody understands that last night was last night," Kidd said.

"We felt we had to just keep ourselves in the game, come out with some energy."

Both coaches had plenty of praise for Kaman, who added 11 rebounds to his career-high point total. It was the third straight game Kaman topped 20 points, marking the first time in his seven-year career he has accomplished that feat.

"He was terrific tonight, he was our anchor," said Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy. "He came up with big basket after big basket.

Defensively he was good, and he was good on the boards. He played a very strong game."

Kaman showed early on that he had his scoring touch. He scored eight consecutive points in the first quarter and had 19 at the half.

His steal at midcourt just before halftime, followed by a three-point play, got the crowd of 13,626 on its feet.

The Mavericks went on a 17-3 run in the third and it appeared the Clippers (0-4) would fade as they had Friday night in a 111-98 loss at Utah. But they rallied to tie the game midway through the fourth.

Jason Terry scored on a drive, however, Erick Dampier put down an alley-oop pass and Dirk Nowitzki scored on a fallaway jumper to extend the lead back to seven with 30 seconds remaining.

"The home team is going to make a run at some point," Carlisle said. "The important thing is to keep you composure. We got 11 stops in the last 12 possessions. It's great evidence of what's going to help us win, and that's activity at the defensive end."

Nowitzki finished with 24 points and nine rebounds, Shawn Marion had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Terry scored 16 off the bench to lead Dallas. A less-likely contributor on the offensive end was Dampier, a 6-foot-11 center who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

"That's a big-time line for a guy that we ask mostly to be a defender and a rebounder and a screener," Carlisle said.

The Clippers received some unexpected points from reserve point guard Sebastian Telfair. He finished with 12 points, including consecutive baskets during the Clippers' fourth-quarter run that got them back into the game. In fact, starting point guard Baron Davis played less than a minute of the final quarter, giving way to Telfair.

Dunleavy did not single out Davis for poor play, but said the team's overall effort was lacking in the second half.

"We came out and took some bad shots," Dunleavy said. "We did not aggressively attack. We didn't move the basketball like we did in the first half. They got easy baskets and we fell behind."

Eric Gordon was the only other Clipper to score in double figures, totaling 16 points."

Mavs 96-85 Jazz !!

Fantastic 4th: Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks surge past Jazz in record fashion.

Dirk scores 29 of Mavericks' 44 points in final period of 96-85 win

09:00 AM CST on Wednesday, November 4,2009
By EDDIE SEFKO/The Dallas Morning News
esefko@dallasnews.com

"On a drab, lifeless Tuesday night at American Airlines Center, everybody found out how quickly a dud can turn into a stud.

It happened with Dirk Nowitzki.

And it happened with a dull game that turned absolutely mesmerizing, thrilling and historic in the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks looked dead for three quarters, and Nowitzki was searching for a pulse, too. Then, as if the paddles had jolted him back to life, Nowitzki dominated the fourth quarter, and the Mavericks pulled off a 27-point turnaround for a determined 96-85 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Nowitzki had 29 points in the fourth quarter, smashing the Mavericks' record for points in a quarter of 27 set by Mark Aguirre in the first period against Denver on March 24, 1984.

"We really couldn't get anything going for three quarters, and it was just ugly – there was a lid on the basket," Nowitzki said. "Defensively we were actually decent, but offensively we just couldn't get going, and then in the fourth quarter we just left it all out there and see what happens and it worked out for us."

Nowitzki had just 11 points after three quarters, when the Mavericks trailed, 67-52. The gap grew to 76-60 before Nowitzki went crazy.

He scored 23 of 25 Maverick points in one stretch, including a step-back jumper with 2:05 to go that put them ahead, 85-83.

"It was tremendous," Jason Terry said of Nowitzki's fourth quarter. "Dirk put us on his back and showed us why he's the MVP. We were in it defensively all night long. But offensively we struggled. It was getting to us. ... But we didn't let our defensive effort lack. I think that's what kept us in the game.

"We're making a point that, when the shot ain't falling – which it ain't – we got to get it done some way. Tonight was a great example."

Even with Nowitzki's big fourth quarter, the Mavericks still only shot 39.5 percent for the game. And for three quarters, they looked like they were ready to start their home portion of the schedule 0-2.

"To be honest, it wasn't looking great," coach Rick Carlisle said. "But we got out of here alive, and it's good to get that first win at home."

Added Jason Kidd: "To be honest, we haven't played well at home yet. We played well for one quarter and found a way to win. That [Nowitzki's run] was special."

They headed to New Orleans directly after the game for tonight's game against the Hornets and probably could have flown there without the plane. Certainly Nowitzki could have.

"I put it up there with a lot of the stuff [Larry] Bird pulled off," Carlisle said. "And some of the all-time greats. It was just phenomenal. And the rest of the guys knew where to get the ball and how to feed off him. It was something to behold."

He did get some help. Shawn Marion and Erick Dampier rebounded, and Jason Terry and Kidd contributed defensively and kept the flow going. Most important, everybody stayed out of Nowitzki's way."

Dampier rolling:
With Drew Gooden (muscle strain, right ribs) out, Dampier has been seeing extended time and putting up numbers to match.
He had 12 rebounds, his third consecutive game of double-figure board work.
"He's been playing well all of training camp, and the two games in LA he was great," Jason Kidd said. "We have to build on that, get as much as we can out of him."

Briefly:
Quinton Ross (bruised back) left the game in the first half and did not return. He's listed as day-to-day, and did make the trip to New Orleans. ... J.J. Barea got the start at shooting guard in the third quarter. ... Nowitzki had only 11 points late in the third quarter and was in danger of seeing his string of consecutive 20-point games snapped at 28. However, he came alive down the stretch and surpassed 20 for the 29th straight game, the longest active streak in the league, stretching to last season. ... Nowitzki's 29 fourth-quarter points were four shy of the NBA record of 33 for a quarter. That mark is shared by San Antonio Spurs legend George Gervin and Denver's Carmelo Anthony.

CLOSE TO PERFECT
Dirk Nowitzki was quite efficient in scoring 29 fourth-quarter points, a franchise record for a quarter.
The numbers:
Category...Made-Attempts
Field goals...7-8
3-pointers....1-2
Free throws..14-14

Dirk snags a record
10:43 PM Tue, Nov 03, 2009
Eddie Sefko/Reporter

"As if he doesn't already own most Maverick records, his 29 fourth-quarter points were the most ever in a quarter by a Maverick, eclipsing the 24 Mark Aguirre had in 1984.

The Mavericks outscored Utah 36-9 down the stretch to complete a 96-85 comeback win.

Huge fourth quarter for Dirk took all the attention away from three horrible quarters before it."--Eddie Sefko
