Dallas Mavericks' offense off to a slow start.

By BRANDON GEORGE
Special to the Star-Telegram

"Forward Shawn Marion is in his first season with the Dallas Mavericks but he’s been in the NBA long enough to identify a troublesome early-season trend.

Marion, who has helped the Mavericks improve defensively, said the offense has been sporadic.

The consistency isn’t there for a team that has added six new players, three of whom have already started.

"Everybody hasn’t clicked on all cylinders yet," said Marion, a 10th-year pro. "It’s like one game it’s one person and the next game it’s somebody else. It’s not all five or all 13 just yet. We’re ready for that to start popping. Once that starts popping, it’s going to be great."

Take the past two games, for example. On Tuesday in a 96-85 home win against Utah, Dirk Nowitzki set a team record by scoring 29 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter.

Jason Kidd also had a good game with 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting, but Jason Terry struggled with only 10 points on 4-for-13 shooting.

The next day, however, Terry was 12-for-18 from the floor for 35 points in a 114-107 overtime loss at New Orleans.

But Kidd scored only nine points on 3-for-12 shooting and Nowitzki fouled out with 2:38 left in regulation and finished with only 12 points, ending his NBA-best 29-game streak of scoring at least 20 points.

"Offensively, we have to fix some stuff," Nowitzki said. "Usually when we get stops, we can run and get some easy baskets but we haven’t gotten that."

Coach Rick Carlisle, center Erick Dampier and Marion said the Mavericks’ inconsistency is a product of new players trying to find their roles and blend in with the team’s mainstays.

"It’s just a matter of us getting used to one another and knowing where we like to catch the ball, what kind of shots we like," Dampier said. "It’s still early. We have a good team."

Maybe Wednesday’s offensive performance was a good sign. The Mavericks had season highs for points (107) and shooting percentage (45.9).

But overall, the Mavericks rank 20th in the NBA in scoring (96.2 ppg) after finishing ninth last season (101.7 ppg). That’s a product of poor shooting.

The Mavs rank 26th in the league in field goal percentage (41.7) after finishing ninth a year ago (46.2).

One reason for the team’s offensive decline can be attributed to missing the injured Josh Howard, who was 44th in the NBA in scoring last season at 18 points a game.

At least this year’s team has found a way to win without shooting lights out. The Mavs shot 39.5 percent against Utah, ending a streak of 22 consecutive losses when they shot less than 40 percent.

The Mavericks are 3-1 this year when shooting less than 42 percent after going 4-21 last season in such games.

"We haven’t played well yet offensively, but we’ve won games not shooting the ball well," Kidd said. "That’s huge."

Injuries take toll.

The Mavericks will probably have only 10 players available tonight against Toronto.

Guard Quinton Ross, who has a bruised lower back, and forward Drew Gooden, out with a right rib-cage muscle strain, didn’t practice Friday.

Gooden and forwards Josh Howard (left ankle surgery) and Tim Thomas (right knee surgery) aren’t expected to play.

Ross is listed as day-to-day but missed Wednesday’s game at New Orleans.

Howard and Thomas haven’t played this season, and Gooden has missed the last three games.

Rick Carlisle said that Howard is "getting closer" to returning to the lineup."

Toronto Raptors (3-2) at Dallas Mavericks (3-2), 8:30 p.m.

The Sports Network

"Dallas shoots for its 10th consecutive home win over the Toronto Raptors when the two teams hookup at American Airlines Center on Saturday night.

The Mavericks are coming off a tough overtime loss in the Big Easy on Wednesday when Chris Paul poured in a game-high 39 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds, as the New Orleans Hornets edged Dallas, 114-107.

Jason Terry paced the Mavs with 35 points off the bench, and Erick Dampier tallied 16 points and 14 boards for Dallas, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Dirk Nowitzki had 12 points and five rebounds before fouling out.

"The opportunities were there. We didn't play a particularly pretty game, but we really battled, and did what we had to do to put us in a position to win," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said. "But, NBA basketball is 48 minutes; on consecutive nights, strange things can happen if you don't make plays. Dirk fouling out was a very difficult break for us,"

The Raptors, meanwhile, won their second straight game in New Orleans on Friday.

Chris Bosh, who went to Lincoln High School in Dallas and has never won an NBA game in his hometown, poured in a game-high 27 points in that one as Toronto handed the Hornets a 107-90 drubbing

Jose Calderon notched 16 points and eight assists, while Hedo Turkoglu chipped in 16 points as well for Toronto, which had split its first four games of the season. Andrea Bargnani added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Jarrett Jack and Marco Belinelli each donated nine points off the bench for the victors.

Toronto made a staggering 14-of-29 from behind the arc in the win.

"We just made shots," Calderon said. "Some days you make them and other days the ball just doesn't want to go in."

...going back to the last BB game...
http://www.star-tele...ry/1737709.html

By EDDIE SEFKO
Special to the Star-Telegram

In the space of 24 hours, the Mavericks saw it all.

Good, bad, ugly _ and a bit of a gag reflex.

After a spirited win in which everything went right in the fourth quarter, they looked like they were ready for an encore Wednesday night at New Orleans Arena.

And then, everything that could go wrong did. And the Mavericks had nobody to blame but themselves.

When Peja Stojakovic _ 0-for-7 to that point _ flipped in a tying 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds to play, the Mavericks knew they’d botched a game they should have won. The proceeded to get drilled in overtime, dropping a 114-107 decision to the Hornets, ending a three-game winning streak.

Against Utah on Tuesday? Dirk Nowitzki had 40 points, 29 in the fourth quarter and the Mavericks could do no wrong.

Against New Orleans on Wednesday? They missed four free throws and had a turnover _ and that was all in the last 13.1 seconds of regulation.

“That’s why you got to finish it out,’’ Jason Kidd said. “Everything went wrong that could go wrong to lose the game. It’s a lesson learned. The game of basketball can be nice and it can be cruel. We didn’t waste any time to see both sides.’’

The Mavericks had gone from five points down after three quarters to up 96-92 after Erick Dampier’s put-back with 16.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Dampier was on his way to a 16-point, 14-rebound night.

David West scored quickly for New Orleans and Jason Terry was fouled immediately.

It was Terry who was doing a splendid fourth-quarter impersonation of Dirk Nowitzki. He had 18 points in the period after Nowitzki had 29 in the fourth on Tuesday.

But Terry missed the first of two free throws. J.J. Barea played excellent defense and drew an offensive foul on Chris Paul with 9.5 seconds left. That seemed to clinch it, especially after Hornets coach Byron Scott was whistled for a technical.

But Terry missed the technical free throw and Barea then missed two free throws.

Sure enough, with the door open, Stojakovic made his only impact on the game a huge one.

New Orleans outscored the Mavericks 9-2 to start the overtime, eliminating any drama.

Call it whatever you want to, a collapse or a meltdown. But the Mavericks knew they had given away a game they had no business losing.

“I take a lot of responsibility, being one of the best free-throw shooters in the league and missing (three) in one game,’’ Terry said. “Just make one and we’d already be on the plane. We had ‘em beat, no question.’’

Terry did more than his share of the heavy lifting with 35 points. He made all six of his shots in the fourth quarter, when the Mavericks didn’t have Dirk Nowitzki at the end after he fouled out.

“Dirk fouling out was a very difficult break for us,’’ coach Rick Carlisle said. “The opportunities were there and we played a great game. It wasn’t a particularly pretty game, but we battled and put ourselves in position to win. But NBA basketball is 48 minutes and on consecutive nights, strange things can happen.’’

Defense makes the difference for Dallas Mavericks this season

08:49 PM CST on Sunday, November 8, 2009
By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News
bgeorge@dallasnews.com

"Perhaps it's hard to believe, but the Dallas Mavericks' new mantra is strong defense.

For a team that once believed the fastest way to the win column was getting to 100 points, this season's Mavericks have talked defense from the beginning and backed it up on the court.

Even on Saturday night, when the offense finally found a rhythm with swingman Josh Howard making his season debut, forward Shawn Marion attributed the Mavericks' season-high point total in a 129-101 win over Toronto to defense.

"Everything starts with the defensive end. We're all playing defense, and you're seeing it now," Marion said. "The more we keep playing defense and getting stops, it's going to fuel our offense."

Last season, the Mavericks were 18-23 in games in which they didn't score in triple digits. This year: 3-1.

Coach Rick Carlisle emphasized defense from the first preseason practice. It's been a missing link the last few seasons for a veteran Mavericks team that hasn't made a deep playoff run.

They addressed defense in the off-season, adding Marion and his far-reaching wingspan and SMU-ex Quinton Ross, whose strength is being a perimeter pest.

"Just by adding those two players, we're already a better defensive team," Dirk Nowitzki said. "We've made a conscious effort to be better defensively. We're doing well defensively, and we're rotating for each other and scrambling and the defense has been fun to watch."

Though Howard gives the team a boost offensively, he'll also help on the other end of the court. He had three steals in the first half against the Raptors. At the shooting guard spot, he can use his height, wingspan and physical play as an advantage.

"They got into us defensively," Toronto coach Jay Triano said. "We didn't match them with the same intensity and that's why [the score was] lopsided."

The Mavericks will have to rely on their defense to help get through a tough upcoming stretch. Beginning Tuesday at home against Houston, Dallas plays five games in seven days and the last four are on the road.

One area the Mavericks struggled in last year was forcing turnovers, ranking 26th in the NBA at 13 per game. Through six games, Dallas is 12th in the league at 15.5 forced turnovers a game.

The Mavericks have held opponents to an average of 94.3 points and 44.2 percent shooting. Last year, Dallas allowed 99.8 points a game.

The Mavericks rank fourth in the NBA this season in blocks with an average of 6.83, led by center Erick Dampier's 2.5 a game.

"As long as we're going out there and playing team defense," Dampier said, "we're going to give ourselves a chance to win every night."

Guard Jason Terry, known for his offensive punch off the bench, said he's even taking it personally to improve his defense.

"I was challenged in training camp early," Terry said. "Actually at the end-of-the-year meetings last year, they said I could do a much better job defensively. I have taken that to heart and the team feeds off of it. Our defense is very underrated and right now we're trying to make a statement."

Mavericks defense has improved this season
4:09 PM Sun, Nov 08, 2009|Brandon George/Reporter

"Say what you want to about this team's offensive woes early on - at least before last night's 129-101 win over Toronto - but the Mavericks have played much better defense so far this season. Coach Rick Carlisle made it a focus early on, and the Mavericks have responded.

Off-season additions of foward Shawn Marion and pesty guard Quinton Ross have certainly helped.

For a team that once believed the fastest way to the win column was getting to 100 points, this season's Mavericks have talked defense from the beginning and backed it up on the court.

Last season, the Mavericks were 18-23 in games in which they didn't score in triple digits. This year: 3-1.

Guard Jason Terry, known for his offensive punch off the bench, said he's even taking it personal to improve his defense.

"I was challenged in training camp early," Terry said. "Actually at the end-of-the-year meetings last year, they said I could do a much better job defensively. I have taken that to heart and the team feeds off of it. Our defense is very underrated and right now we're trying to make a statement."

The Mavericks will have to rely on their defense to help get them through a tough upcoming stretch. Beginning Tuesday at home against Houston, Dallas plays five games in seven days and the last four are on the road.

Let's hear from you. What are your thoughts on the Mavericks' defense so far this season? And give us your prediction for the team's record over its upcoming five-games-in-seven-days stretch (the opponents: Houston, San Antonio, Minnesota, Detroit and Milwaukee)."
