Mavs drop 2009 preseason opener.

2009 Mavericks fall short without Marion, Howard...

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
esefko@dallasnews.com
The Mavericks hope to be one of the NBA's best running teams this season, but it doesn't work without their main runners.

Shawn Marionand Josh Howard, half of the relay team the Mavericks hope to surround Jason Kidd with, were out for the preseason opener Monday night and it was tough to get any sort of a read on the Mavericks because of it.

They were beaten by the Orlando Magic 110-105, as the shooting was poor and the fouls were plentiful at a less-than-half-full American Airlines Center.

Marion sat out with a minor right calf injury. He likely will play Friday at Washington.

Howard, recovering from what coach Rick Carlisle called a "minor reconstruction" of his left ankle, won't play until later in the preseason. Howard was in pain throughout last season and had off-season surgery on both his ankle and left wrist.

"He's made steady progress," Carlisle said. "But he has not participated in any live drills. He hasn't actually played in a scrimmage yet. We're getting closer to that.

"The hope is that he can play toward the latter part of exhibition season."

Carlisle, of course, would like as much time as possible to get Howard and Marion on the court. But he will not rush things.

"It's Mother Nature you're dealing with," Carlisle said. "He had a minor reconstruction of his left ankle. It's a significant procedure. And the prognosis is excellent. We just got to make sure we're following the right steps."

It was a typical preseason game. Dwight Howard fouled out in 23 minutes, both teams were sloppy and the Mavericks shot under 40 percent.

The replacement refs called 64 fouls and 92 free throws were shot.

Vince Cartermade his debut for the Magic with 21 points. Dirk Nowitzki had 23 for the Mavericks, 17 on free throws.

Welcome back:Brandon Bass made his return to Dallas memorable with a three-point play with 1:17 left to put the Magic up 105-101.

Bass said it was a bit strange going against the team he played for the last two seasons.

"I really enjoyed my time here," Bass said. "It's a little awkward. But business is business. Both teams made the decisions they thought were best."

Bass signed a four-year, $18 million deal with the Magic. When he received that payday, it was well-received in the Mavericks' locker room, particularly by Jason Terry, who said Bass owed him a few bucks.

Said Bass: "Jet did take care of me while I was here. But pretty much everybody on the team owes Jet some kind of money."

Tickets available: With the economic downturn has come a slowdown in NBAticket sales, including the Mavericks, owner Mark Cuban said.

"We still got a couple thousand left for the opener, and that's never happened," Cuban said. "People just think you can't get tickets because it's been sold out for so long. You just got to get the word out."

Cuban, who has lowered ticket prices the last two seasons, offered free tickets for the preseason opener Monday to anybody who asked for them within one hour of tip-off.

"We're a lot better off than most teams, unless you're in a huge market like LA or New York or have been in the Finals like Boston, Orlando or Cleveland," he said. "Other than that, everybody's struggling a little bit."

There's also another factor, he said.

"I think we're getting hurt a little by the Cowboys, too," Cuban said. "A lot of people spent a lot of money on those tickets."

Mavs lose, 110-105

Eddie Sefko/Reporter

In a game with 64 fouls and 92 free throws, the Mavericks finally cried uncle Monday night, surrendering a 110-105 loss to the Orlando Magic.

With no Shawn Marion or Josh Howard, the Mavericks didn't look anything like they hope to look this season.

Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points, 17 from the free-throw line.

Vince Carter had 21 for the Magic.

The Mavericks are 0-1 in the preseason after Orlando's 110-105 win that lasted two hours, 38 minutes, officially.

Unofficially, it seemed a lot longer than, even to the players, because of 64 fouls and 92 free throws.

"My butt was hurting from sitting so long,'' Kris Humphries joked. "Don't they (the refs) know that people want to go home?''

Apparently not.

should be a interesting year. the mavs certainly upgraded their roster no doubt with the additions of marion and dwight gooden. dwight is a banger down low that is more reliable to score than dampier, but is also a inconsistent player. marion is a hustler who does everything well...his only weakness is creating his own shot so the mavs won't run iso-plays through him....but the mavs have dirk, howard, and terry for that. marion will help with rebounding and defense and marion also fits in with kidd because he is a excellent transition player and is one of the best WR's in the NBA finishing at the rim. you will see a lot more action above the rim with kidd and marion on the court together if he still has some juice in those legs. when marion was in phoenix most of his points were off hustle plays or pick and roll finishing at the rim thanks to steve nash. gooden can spell dirk and play some center if need be. the good thing about these guys is that they are all interchangeable. marion can play both forward positions. dirk can play the center, gooden can play the 4 and the 5. howard can play 2 and 3. I think howard's health will really determine how well the mavs play. the mavs need howard to play the 2 position this year and to play well at both ends. I think they will be able to push SA for the division lead, but LA is still the team at the top until proven otherwise.

Shawn Marion scores 26 in Dallas Mavericks' 123-115 preseason win.

Marion scores 26 in Dallas Mavericks' 123-115 preseason win.

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
esefko@dallasnews.com
WASHINGTON – "Jason Kidd was analyzing the benefits Shawn Marion will bring to the Mavericks and besides the rebounding, steals, blocks and natural feel for the game, there is something else.

"He'll help Dirk [Nowitzki] a lot," Kidd said. "Watch how much things open up for Dirk when Shawn is in there."

Mavericks 123, Wizards 115

Marion a monster in his Mavs debut

Sefko: Rookie doesn't play like one

"If their first pairing, a 123-115 exhibition win against Washington on Friday night, is any indicator, Kidd has this tag-team pegged. Marion and Nowitzki fed off each other all night at Verizon Center and teamed for 40 points in 54 combined minutes, making 16-of-24 shots.

It doesn't get much more efficient than that, as long as you don't look at their defense. They gave up 38 points in the 51 minutes Washington forwards Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison had.

But why split hairs after one game? Besides, Marion and Nowitzki combined for five steals.

Nowitzki came away with a big smile regarding his new running mate at small forward.

"He's pretty amazing, I got to admit," Nowitzki said. "Playing against him all these years, you don't really know all the little things he does. I really like playing with him. He doesn't demand the ball, he just gets his points on the go."

And he also sees the big picture. Marion's do-it-all game should make life simpler for Nowitzki.

"I really think, especially on the break, that's going to open up my shots on transition," he said. "And we can get some baskets where we don't have to work extra, extra hard."

On Friday, Marion's constant movement on offense meant the Wizards could not dedicate two defenders to Nowitzki. He's become a crafty enough passer to find Marion (and Josh Howard later, when he's healthy) when they slice through open lanes. And when Washington tried to guard Nowitzki with one guy near the top of the key, he consistently made face-up jumpers.

It won't always work that well. This was merely one preseason game. But it's already clear that this pairing has a chance to be very potent.

No timetable for Howard: Coach Rick Carlisle's estimate on when Josh Howard might return from left ankle and left wrist surgeries wasn't necessarily grim, but it was vague.

While the thinking is that Howard will be cleared to scrimmage in the next 10 days, Carlisle said nothing is set yet.

"Josh is going to be a while," Carlisle said. "He's making steady progress, but we're not sure when he's going to play. ...

"I'll probably announce it the day he's going to play, whenever that is – whether it's two weeks, a month or a month and a half."

A month and a half?

"It could be," he said. "The guy had two significant surgical procedures, so he'll be ready when he's ready and we'll go from there." "

Briefly:In the strange-but-true world of the NBA,
Washington's Mike Millerhas hair like Nowitzki and
named his son Maverick. Yes, Maverick Miller.
"Maybe he's trying to tell us something," owner Mark Cuban said ...
About 2,000 tickets are available for the Mavericks' season opener
against the Wizards on Oct. 27 at American Airlines Center, more
left than for the preseason games against Cleveland (LeBron James,
Shaquille O'Nealon Oct. 17) and Memphis (Allen Iverson) on Sunday.

Kris Humphries helps Dallas Mavericks down Memphis, 114-107!!
Humphries is a nice surprise.

Humphries helps Dallas Mavericks down Memphis, 114-107
02:36 AM CDT on Monday, October 12, 2009
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
esefko@dallasnews.com

"Of all the key acquisitions the Dallas Mavericks made over the summer, Kris Humphries' arrival barely caused a ripple.

Yet less than two weeks into training camp, he's provided some of the biggest tidal waves, not to mention one of the biggest dunks.

The 6-8 forward has been the surprise of training camp. Apparently, he shocked Memphis' Zach Randolph, too. Humphries blew past the Grizzlies' forward twice for drives to the basket, including a thunderous two-handed throw-down that lit up the crowd and was the memorable play of the Mavericks' 114-107 win Sunday night at American Airlines Center.

It's becoming routine to see Humphries making quality contributions. He had 16 points and nine rebounds (five offensive) in 21 minutes against Memphis.

"He's been very consistent," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's got an all-around game and he's physical. He's been playing well since we got him in the trade. ... Look, there's still a long way to go, but he's making a strong case that he's deserving consideration for some playing time."

Humphries is coming off a broken leg that sidelined him most of last season. For that, he was somewhat of an unknown quantity coming into camp.

Not anymore. His rebounding and physical play have served him well.

"He's been multidimensional since we tried to recruit him at Kansas," center Drew Gooden said of the former Minnesota Gopher. "We're on the same page, especially when that ball goes up. We're like two football players trying to get offensive rebounds."

Indeed, Gooden and Humphries combined for eight of the Mavericks' 13 offensive boards. Humphries came into camp not knowing what to expect. But he's quickly carving a niche for himself.

He said hard-nosed play is how he hopes to find minutes on the court.

"Everyone wants to play," he said. "That's why you work hard. You got a lot of guys who are thirsty to play. I'm no different. I just want to come in and be a guy who gives energy and runs the floor."

Balancing act: Quinton Ross has averaged 20 minutes per game in his five-year NBA career. He knows doing so with the Mavericks this season won't be easy. Ross, like all players, wants to play as much as he can.

Unlike a lot of players, he knows that coming to a quality team might mean fewer opportunities than when he was with a lottery team like the Grizzlies were last season.

"You always want to play," he said. "But at the same time, you always want to win, too. It was tough last year, but I got an opportunity to play and display my skills. Hopefully, with this Maverick team, I can keep battling and get some minutes."

Briefly:Shawn Marion sat out most of the second half after his calf muscle tightened up. He missed the preseason opener last week with the same injury, but Marion said postgame that it was not serious. ... Carlisle was disappointed in the Mavericks' first-quarter defense. "Defensively, we were horrible to start the game," he said. "I keep talking about defense and our activity is not yielding the kind of results we need." He added that after the first six or eight minutes, the defense improved, citing 26 deflections in the first half."

Dallas Mavericks back up their talk about defense
...after surrendering at least 107 points and allowing opponents to shoot 48.3 percent in the first three games, the Dallas Mavericks clamped down on the shorthanded Detroit Pistons and rolled to a 113-88 exhibition win Thursday night at American Airlines Center.

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
esefko@dallasnews.com
If you were picking a fight song for the Mavericks' defense after three exhibition games, it would have been that regrettable hit by the band of the same name: Talk Talk.

Because that's all they had done – talk about it.

On Thursday night, they walked the walk – for a brief spell, at least.

After surrendering at least 107 points and allowing opponents to shoot 48.3 percent in the first three games, the Mavericks clamped down on the shorthanded Detroit Pistons and rolled to a 113-88 exhibition win at American Airlines Center.

Rick Carlisle is determined to get the Mavericks into a defensive mode this season. In their defense, they haven't had Shawn Marion or Josh Howard, two of their top defenders, on the court much.

Also, it's only preseason, which can be a difficult time to gauge efficiency at either end of the court.

But the Mavericks held the Pistons to 41.8 percent shooting, commendable considering the visitors were over 50 percent in the second quarter. In particular, the third quarter was a defensive clinic, Carlisle said.

"In the first half, we were very average and not good enough to be a contending team," he said. "In the third quarter, I thought our defense was excellent."

One quarter out of four won't cut it when the games start counting. But considering how poorly the Mavericks had been defending through three games, this was a step in the right direction. Good defense and rebounding helped open up the offensive game, too.

A big part of the defense was Quinton Ross, who guarded high-scoring Ben Gordon much of the time.

Said Ross: "Defense is about want-to. Everybody talks about it. And if everybody talks about it, hopefully everybody gets on the right page."

Carlisle has seen glimpses that Ross can be a big-time contributor defensively.

"His abilities as a player fit in with what we need from our role players," Carlisle said. "At his age (28), he's still very young and has the opportunity to continue to develop."

Marion timetable: Marion said the prognosis for his sore right calf calls for a return in seven-to-10 days.

That would put him back perhaps for the final preseason game on Oct. 24. He said he plans to be fully recovered for the regular-season opener on Oct. 27.

"It's one of those things that if you don't let it heal, it can linger," Marion said. "And I don't want it to linger. I was trying to play through it a little, and I actually tweaked it a little more in the last game."

Flu precautions: The Cleveland Cavaliers come to town Saturday night, and LeBron James and a couple of teammates have been treated for the H1N1 flu.

James is making the trip, which starts tonight in San Antonio.

So far, the Mavericks have been lucky in that nobody on the team has been knocked out for any serious time by flu-like symptoms.

"We've done everything," Carlisle said. "Hey, swine flu is everywhere. We have a much higher awareness level and more of a pro-active approach to it this year than in past years. If guys wake up at home and have a fever, they're not going to come to practice. It's as simple as that."

Cavs' JV squad no match for Mavericks
Column by EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News | esefko@dallasnews.com

Every preseason, there is usually one throwaway game, and the Mavericks had theirs Saturday night.

Not that they didn't do some good things. They had only three turnovers in the first half, a welcome sight after averaging over 15 in the first four exhibitions.

And Dirk Nowitzki showed he's dialed in on his jump shot and just about everything else with 19 points, hitting eight of his first nine shots in 26 minutes.

Tack on a 93-82 victory and it all sounds good until you hear that Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James, Mo Williams, Delonte West and Andersen Verajao didn't play for Cleveland. That's 100 percent of the Cavaliers' preferred starting lineup.

As you might suspect, the game quality went south much quickly. But the Mavericks were ahead, 43-37, at halftime while shooting 37 percent. That was a testament to their solid defense, no matter who Cleveland played. And it fulfilled one of Carlisle's desires: that the Mavericks find a way to win games (or halves) when shooting poorly.

"Exhibition isn't reality," Carlisle said before the tip. "I mean LeBron James is scoring 15 a game [in the preseason]. It's just not going to go down that way."

Hopefully, there won't be any more games that go down the way Saturday's did, either.

Dallas Mavericks tune out a tuneup vs. Cavaliers.

For the Dallas Mavericks, Tuesday night's 96-66 loss to Cleveland was a case of turnabout being fair play. Dallas foiled any plans to make this a tuneup for real games by sitting Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry - which seemed to be a response to the Cavaliers' similar strategy Saturday in Dallas.

PITTSBURGH–"Sometimes, payback doesn't come in the form of a gutsy victory.

On Tuesday night, it came in the form of a 30-point loss for the Mavericks.

They successfully turned the back-to-back games against the Cleveland Cavaliers into two lopsided affairs that revealed nothing about either team. It was a clear case of turnabout being fair play.

Cavs 96, Mavs 66

Payback?
The Cavaliers started Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James, Anderson Varejaoand Mo Williams – all of whom sat Saturday at American Airlines Center – and rolled to a 96-66 victory at the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Events Center.

Clearly, the Cavaliers were treating this like their regular-season dress rehearsal.

Whether it was premeditated or not, it looked like the Mavericks and Rick Carlisle were giving the Cavaliers a dose of their own medicine. They foiled any plans to make this a tuneup for real games by sitting Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, all of whom are healthy, in addition to sitting the injured Josh Howard, Shawn Marion and Tim Thomas.

Suiting up only nine players, the Mavericks trailed by as much as 39 points.

The decision to sit the three heavy lifters was made Monday. There's nothing unusual about resting stars in the preseason, although in this case, it seemed obvious that it was a response to Cleveland's strategy in Dallas.

Either way, what it means is that the Mavericks are certain to begin the regular season next Tuesday with virtually no live game action with their regular rotation of players on the floor together.

Not that there weren't some things to draw from the loss. Drew Gooden had 10 points and nine rebounds against his former team. The Mavericks also got 20 points and nine boards from Kris Humphries.

But the best news came in the second half, when the Mavericks found out they dodged a bullet physically. Roddy Beaubois came back into the game in the second half after limping off in the second quarter after taking a knee to the leg from O'Neal. Beaubois barely limped off the court on his own but played well in the fourth quarter.

"But I can still feel it," he said.

Retiring type? There is a petition supported by a University of Arizona booster group that is circulating and calling for Terry's jersey to be retired by the school.

"I'm all for it," Terry said. "There aren't many who they've done that for."

Actually, only four – Sean Elliott, Steve Kerr, Mike Bibby and Jason Gardner.

LeBron on football: James was asked before the game whether he sees Pittsburgh as a good basketball town.

"Nah, you got the Steelers," he said. "As long as you got the Steelers, you can't be a basketball town."

Asked for his idea of a good basketball town, James said Indianapolis and Lexington, Ky.

Clearly, he hasn't been to a Pacers game lately, but he was speaking more of high school and college basketball.

James, guarded well by Quinton Ross in the first half, finished with 12 points but made only three of 13 shots."

Dallas Mavericks' trade of forward to Minnesota is mainly a money issue

12:07 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Column by EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News | esefko@dallasnews.com

Eddie Sefko
PITTSBURGH–"The Mavericks liked 6-10 forward Nathan Jawai, even while he was packing at least 280 pounds.

But they didn't like him enough to pay nearly $1.5 million to keep him.

The Australian, considered a nice project for the future, was traded to Minnesota on Tuesday for a future second-round draft pick. It's a distant future, too. In fact, it will be surprising if the Mavericks ever see it. They'll probably use it as a sweetener for a trade in the future.

What the Mavericks accomplished with the trade was to get rid of a guaranteed contract. And while Mark Cuban had to write a check to Minnesota to cover Jawai's $735,000 salary this season, he won't have to pay an extra $735,000 in luxury-tax money.

That alone makes the deal worth it. They also got down to 15 guaranteed contracts (plus the nonguaranteed Jake Voskuhl).

Aside from the impact on Cuban's wallet, the biggest winner in the deal is Jawai. Though at least one Mavericks big man thought highly of Jawai's talent, he would not have played here this season.

"It's probably best for Nathan in terms of playing time," said Jason Ranne, his agent. "We've been pushing for this, and the Mavericks were very helpful."

Another interesting sidelight is which former Maverick will play better for the Timberwolves – Jawai or Ryan Hollins?"
