Statewide... I'd guess Permian vs Midland Lee.

Biggest in Austin area is Westlake vs. Austin High. Got even more heated over the past few years (Westlake won in overtime last season)... Kinda surprising it's such a rivalry since we lead the series 18-2.

Based on that take your pick

Huntsville vs Brenham may not be the oldest or biggest, but it is definitely intense. These two schools square off in every sport every year even if they are not in the same district or division. Over the years I have gotten to know some of the Brenham folks and can tell you that they want to beat us just as bad as we want to beat them in everything. This rivalry is so intense that I bet there would be a sellout for a tiddly winks game. :argue:

Glad to hear! Your welcome then hornetdad, atleast they can't say they won state :).

In the Fort Worth area in 4A, I would have to say the Aledo / Stephenville rivalry has been what I grew up hearing about. The game is now usually our season opener (not sure if we play them before or after LT now). They are an amazing team in 4A, even considering they had the chance to play in 3A this next season, when they could have easly won state in 2009 against Brenham. We (aledo) played Stephenville twice this (last) season. I will never forget the overtime finish in the Dallas Cowboys stadium on 4th down, down by 3, we went for the outside run by our QB. He somehow dragged a couple defenders into the end zone with him (hes a soph, not so huge) We say our remembered and loved team mate, Hunter Moke #18, pulled him through (Hunter Moke passed away during the season). I can say that the Stephenville Yellow Jackets are the real deal, not the COMPLETE BS team who try to call themselves the real Yellow Jackets, Denison.

Im not sure why you would doubt my post. The Rivalry started in 1970, Its not the longest rivalry and that was the reason for the post. The statement was the biggest not the longest rivalry. It seems that all the post are geared toward the start of the rivalry. This was not the question that started the post. From day 1, 20,000 people showed up for the game. It has grown. This is one reason why when Mesquite Memorial Stadium was built, It is one of the largest stadiums in the state of Texas for a high school stadium. It is larger than most college stadiums. I dont disagree with you on the longest, but the biggest is still in question. The stadium if filled and there are still people on the sidelines that dont have seats. I am a "Skeeter", but this has nothing to do with this post. My 1st year in high school, was the start of the rivaly. We had a rivalry with Garland. But when North Mesquite was built, this changed. North Mesquite came over and dumped a huge load of horse manure on Mesquites Highs school steps the 1st year. The next day, some the the Mesquite football players had killed a sick old horse and chopped of its head off took it over to the North Mesquite campus and ran it up the flag pole. This started the rivalry. I dont condone what was done. But this started the rivalry and from then on it just got worse. The North Mesquite and Mesquite game used to be the last game of the season. It seemed to just build the excitement for the game, but the rivalry seemed to just get bigger and bigger. So the district changed the schedule and put the game in the middle of the district games and the pranks seemed to lessen. Its still one of the biggest games of the season, the pranks are not as severe.

Skeeter, that game may pull in 20,000 a year. But your not taking population into account. Sherman/Denison each have a population of around 25,000. So obviously 20,000 arent going to show up, not to mention that neither of the stadiums has anywhere close to the seating. But the fact is, each and every year, sun or rain or blizzard or tornado, these two teams go and play their hearts out. Their is an intense rivalry between these schools. You talk of horse manure and horse heads. Denison and Sherman can talk about their fans getting in brawls over a wrong word said. Their is vandalism all around each of the towns the week of the Ax. Its a fact that during that week, vandalism goes up humoungously. You can go through the streets of Denison, and see hundreds of spray paintings on the side of buildings that say SHERMAN with an Ax drawn beneath them. Same goes for inside Sherman. The people in these areas will beat you down and try to kill you if you diss their school. These schools are the BIGGEST rivalry in Texas, and I'm personally willing to place a bet that their in the top 3 in the nation. Its an undeniable fact. =)

Back in the 70's, Cisco vs. Eastland was a pretty good rivalry.

In 1975, a bunch of juniors (Big John, where were you?) went to Maverick stadium and "rustled" the steel maverick head (we called it a muley-head) off of their scoreboard. It ended up tied and cut to pieces on the Cisco High flagpole.

School administrators were not happy. Football coaches were not happy. Call it inspiration, but we thrashed the Mavericks 54-13. Our ag boys had to create a new muley-head; and our student council had to present the new muley-head at an Eastland school assembly once it was finished. Three of the senior football players (including yours truly) were on the student council. We smirked throught the whole assembly.

IN MY PART OF THE STATE WE DONT HAVE TO PRIVILEGE OF THE RIVALRY EXCEPT OUT OF STATE. IN THE PAST I BELIEVE WE KINDA HAD A RIVALRY WIT BETWEEN T HIGH AND HP BUT ONLY IN THE PLAYOFFS. SEEMS WE ALWAYS SEEM TO MEET UP IN THE 3RD ROUND OR SO.

The Brownwood/Stephenville rivalry is a big deal, and the last few years, Aledo/Stephenville has gotten very huge since the day that Aledo went 4A. I'm surprised that no one has yet mentioned the Mount Pleasant/Sulphur Springs rivalry or better yet, the Ennis/Waxahachie rivalry.

Agreed. Stephenville was more intense than the actual championship game. Know one of the players had "Beat Stephenville Twice" engraved inside his state ring instead of his name. Not to gloat about beating them twice but because of how hard they had to work to beat a really great team two times to get that ring....it could have easily gone the other way.

How about Permian - Midland Lee? Isn't that a pretty big rivalry?

Yeah, that's a big rivalry.

What about Permian and Odessa High (broncos)? Not sure if anyone said this already.

I couldn't imagine if matt b would of tripped or been tackled on that play. Stephenville would be the team with all the hype and we wouldn't of become the new beast of 4A. Than again we do have that #32 guy.

Westlake vs. LT has gotten bigger and more heated. (We led for three quarters this year, but LT came back to win it)

And something tells me that LT/Aledo may just be an emerging rivalry. You can bet that if they start playing annually, the games will be passionate and intense.

Couldn't agree more. I'm already excited to see the game next year when our 2 year starters are finally seniors with J gray.
