In class 3A, where only the top 3 teams in a district go to the playoffs, how is it determined in the case of a three way tie?
Ex.
Team A 5-0
Team B 3-2
Team C 3-2
Team D 3-2
Team B wins over team C, but loses to team D
Team C wins over team D, but loses to team B
Team D wins over team B, but loses to team C
Ex.
Team A 5-0
Team B 3-2
Team C 3-2
Team D 3-2
Team B wins over team C, but loses to team D
Team C wins over team D, but loses to team B
Team D wins over team B, but loses to team C

....received this from 'The Breaks' a while back---hope this helps!!!
Each district sets their own tie-breaker system. Some districts, probably not many any more, still use the coin flip.
The coin flip is still the recommended tie breaker by the UIL.
Head to head is the first tie-breaker. So in a two team tie the winner of the game is the tie-breaker.
In a three team tie, most districts use the point system.
Also each district sets what the maximum amount of points that can be used in the tie-breaker. Most use the numbers between 12 and 21. I think in that particular district the number is 15, but not totally sure.
Also some districts use positive and negative points, most use positive only. Only the games of the teams who are tied will be used in the point scenario.

I figured they would use the point system to break the first tie and then look at head to head for the remaing two teams. But, wow, you just made this that much harder to figure out. I'm headed out to scout a game on Friday and realized that if they lose there is the possibly that I wasted a 6 hr round trip.
If total points scored in district play were used then the team i'm watching would be 3rd of the three. Then looking at heads up among the two remaining teams, well they would have just lost to form this three way tie.
If this is the method used, I see the coach with a terrible delima...they could play to win, as all teams should, and possibly lose a close one. Or....if they lost by 50-60 points they would make the playoffs AND get a first round BYE!
Gotta love TX HS Football!!

If it's a two way tie;the winner gets the higher ranking; however 3-way ties have a different set of rules. Most use the points differential unless one team won by something like 15 points or more. I believe that is the most points a winner is allowed; even if they won like 60-0. An example is in 6-5A last year. Lewisville Hebron was 5-0 & #1. SLC,Coppell, & FM Marcus were each 3-2. SLC: lost to Coppell 53-57 & beat Marcus 42-35 giving them +3 POINTS. Coppell lost to Marcus 26-31 giving them -1 POINT. Marcus 31-26 & 35-42 was -2 POINTS. SLC was #2, Coppell was #3 & Marcus was #4. If one of these teams had won by 60-0; they still wouldn't have been allowed more that 10-15 points; whatever the cut-off is; to their credit. However; some districts use a coin flip which is rediculous. The teams play on the field to win & one of them ends up losing on a coin flip.

That makes much more sense, and takes away the notion that you could throw the game to get an automatic bid. I mean, I guess if the race was close eonough, you could throw the game on purpose to push another team ahead in the points. I'll say one thing, this is much more logical than a coin toss, AND WAY MORE logical than breaking a tie based on BCS rankings!
