Wylie, Clyde boys battle through double overtime, game decided on banked basket
By Daniel Youngblood
Posted January 11, 2010 at 11:45 p.m.
CLYDE—Wylie led by 12 points with 6:38 to play in regulation.
Clyde needed to make just one of two free throws with no time on the clock to win the game in the first overtime period.
But it wasn’t until Caston Hilcher banked in an off-balanced 3-pointer at the double-overtime buzzer that Monday’s game between the two teams was decided. After nearly two hours of basketball at the Clyde High School gymnasium, a winner was finally declared: Clyde 59, Wylie 56.
“We had our chances, and they just kept battling. There’s just no quit in these guys,” first-year Clyde coach Eric Phelps said. “They just kept playing defense and getting one basket at a time. We got lucky there at the end, but luck’s good every now and then.”
For much of the game, overtime looked unlikely. After a Lance Lindley 3-pointer in the opening minute of the game erased a 2-0 deficit — Clyde’s only lead in regulation — Wylie took a 26-23 lead into halftime and stretched that to 10 (42-32) by the end of the third quarter.
But after a Wylie-dominated third period, the resilient Clyde Bulldogs bounced back.
Back-to-back buckets by Rayce Burks gave Wylie a 46-34 lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but Clyde (19-1) answered with 12-1 run to pull within one point. And after Lindley hit a pair of free throws with 19.22 seconds to play, Tanner Welch nailed a trey off the inbounds play for his only field goal of the game with nine seconds left to complete the Clyde comeback and tie the game at 49.
After Wylie was unable to get a shot off, the game went into overtime, where neither team could do much offensively.
Hilcher, who scored a game-high 23 points — 19 of which came after halftime — hit a layup to give Clyde its first lead since the first minute, but Wylie answered with a Burks floater.
From that point on, however, the teams combined to go 0-for-5 from the field and 0-for-6 from the free throw line for the rest of the period. Clyde’s last two misses both were potential game-winners by John Allen Davidson with no time on the clock after Burks foul on Clyde’s defensive end of the floor.
Things opened up some in the second overtime period. Wylie began the period with a pair of layups to go ahead 55-51 and a Daxton Deal free throw with 1:02 remaining put Russell Perkins’ Bulldogs up by three at 56-53.
But a three-point play by Baylor Dean tied the game with less than 11 seconds to play.
Wylie had a chance at the last shot, but a turnover gave Clyde that opportunity with 4.31 seconds to play.
And Phelps’ Bulldogs didn’t disappoint. A full-court pass came to Hilcher, who fielded it, took a couple of dribbles, and threw up a contested fadeaway 3-pointer. It ricocheted off the backboard and into the net as time expired, giving Clyde the win and causing the packed home side of the arena to erupt in celebration.
“Caston’s just a workhorse for us. When we need a basket that’s who we go to,” Phelps said. “(The winning shot was) just incredible.”
While Hilcher’s heroics proved to the be the difference in the game, he was just one of several heroes for Clyde. Davidson scored 21, all in regulation, and Welch’s 3-pointer at the end of the fourth quarter made the comeback possible.
Lindley and Burks led the Wylie Bulldogs (12-11), with 18 and 16 points, respectively, in the losing effort.
“Of course we always want to win games, but we haven’t got to play very many games together. And our football guys got to play a game and a half tonight,” said Perkins, whose team opens District 2-3A play with a road game against Brownwood on Friday. “So hopefully that helps us down the stretch. We just need some court time and we were fortunate to get to play extra.
“I think it’s a good thing. Hopefully we’ll be in games like that later on that are even more important, and we’ll be able to execute a little better and come out on top.”

Eastland 55-31 Cisco.
With collegiate scouts from Iowa State and Texas on hand to watch him, 6-foot-9 Eastland postman Forrest Robinson did what he does best: dominate.
Tallying 29 points and 17 rebounds, Robinson led No. 20 Eastland (17-3, 2-0 District 6-2A) to a workmanlike 24-point win.
Cisco, which dropped to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in league play, got 10 points from Vegas Hastings and eight from Terrance Shelby.
“He’s a talent, and we try to (use) him whenever we can,” Eastland coach Doug Galyean said. “But we’ve also got a lot of help around him and Cisco did a great job tonight.
“They were a lot more intense than us early on.”
Leading by nine at the break and by 13 at the end of three quarters, the Mavericks didn’t blow the game open until a 10-0 run over the final three minutes.
Eastland’s first double-digit lead didn’t come until the 4:10 mark of the third quarter, when Marcus Bartee hit a leaner on the baseline.
“We played pretty well defensively until the fourth quarter,” Cisco coach Kevin Hearne said. “We’re not a team which can put a lot of points on the board quickly so we pressured them (late) and it turned into easy buckets for them.”
