3 teams would be fine. 4 is to many team in the playoffs.Dont put too much stock into that stat though. For a long long time, only 1 team out of each district even made the playoffs. I don't know if by 85 or 86 they had went to the 2 team in each district format, but it was somethime around there. There were lots of good teams in the 80's that didn't go to the playoffs with 9-1 or 8-2 records. Nowadays teams go with 3-7 records. 4 teams in each district is too many, and 1 is just not fair. I personally like the 3 teams going, but it leaves you with odd numbers in the playoffs.

I agree but sometimes you will have tough districts like Plano or east Tx or the Odessa and Abilene district or even the Arlington district last year when they had Desoto, Cedar Hill and Ducanville in there. In most cases they dont need that many teams though..3 teams would be fine. 4 is to many team in the playoffs.

Top 3 teams in each district make the playoffs, and district winners get a first round bye. Would make for a perfect playoff setup.Texas needs to go back to just allowing the top 2 teams from each district into the playoffs and eliminating the Division I/II crappola.

That would work fine for me. I'm just tired of the split class champions. Its been 20 years since Texas has had 1 5A champion, hard to believe how time flies.
Texas don't have the worst playoff formula for hs football, but it sure aint any where close to the best either. I wish they would extend the season another week and let the 2 title winners from each class play for the outright CHAMP. A Gilmer/Carthage game, Dangerfield/Pilot Point game, and LT/Aledo game would have been great games. Euless Trinity was playing their best ball late, and possibly could have knocked off Abilene, who knows.
Going to a seeding format, like Louisiana or Georgia would be neat too. I don't know how feasible it would be with Texas' size, but would be more exciting than the NCAA Men's BB touney seeding, for me at least. Let all the district champions get an automatic berth, and then pick the next 32, 64, or ever how many teams based on some sort of power rating formula. Much better than the system we have now.
I'm fixin to email Breithuip? now.

I got your winners Dangerfield, LT, Abilene.. I want us to play whoever is the #1 National that year for the extra game..That would work fine for me. I'm just tired of the split class champions. Its been 20 years since Texas has had 1 5A champion, hard to believe how time flies.

I plan to be at that game. I'm picking Aledo because of home field and Jonathan Gray. I don't think LT will be able to stop him.You might have to include Lake Travis some where in this, we think we can win #4 in a row & 62 games in a row and under 3 different head coaches not many can say that.

Should be a good game. Aledo better score a lot, because we all know LT can score, and they return 7 on offense. LT will be as good as the've been during the streak IMO.

Below is a link to the 2004 state championship game CINCINNATI COLERAIN won. There are 2 more links to this game on YOUTUBE
I saw this team play in the playoffs. To that point, I had never seen (nor have I since) a high school team
dominate both sides of the ball.
They fumbled 4 of their first 5 posessions and still went onto win 55-10 (or something like that) in the state championship
This team had 22 juniors/seniors go on to play college football.
This may never answer the question as to which team is the best but it will bring some perspective

I agree. I've said this before myself. In 1982 the UIL began allowing 2 teams & Beaumont Westbrook (11-4-1) won state. They should have stayed with that format. Many times we don't really know who the #1 team is anymore. For example; in 1996 Lewisville (15-0) & Austin Westlake (16-0) were both dominant & it was anyone's guess as to who should have been #1 & this has occurred several times since - not just in 5A; but in the other classifications as well. Fortunately; this year there shouldn't be any question as far as 5A goes; but the othere classifications might be another story.Texas needs to go back to just allowing the top 2 teams from each district into the playoffs and eliminating the Division I/II crappola.

I like 1990 Ruston,La., 1996 Hampton,Va., 1999 Concord DLS,Cal, 2004 Cincinnati Colerain,Ohio, 2008 FL St. Thomas Aquinas,Fla. However; some of this years teams might rank above those teams.I'll nominate 2005 Lakeland FL or 2007 Miami Northwestern.
Two teams that were oozing with talent and had good coaching and a desire to win.

This has both positive and negative aspects for the team getting the "bye" week. It gives them an extra week to heal their wounds; but at the same time the off week makes them "cold" while their opponent comes in "hot".I agree with that

NOR, please tell what you know about Northshore in 2003, assuming you actually saw them, to think them being one of the best ever is laughable. (Please don't show me records of teams they beat, that's nonsense if you don't have a frame of reference to how good those teams actually were)LMAO, good one
