Longtime Roscoe coach resigns
One of the Big Country's most successful high school coaches is getting out of the business.
Wes Williams, who has spent his entire career in Roscoe and won 80 percent of his games as head football coach while leading the Plowboys to 12 straight Class 1A playoff appearances since 1998, confirmed Thursday he is resigning at the end of the current school year.
Williams' resignation was accepted Monday by the Roscoe school board during its regular meeting, according to superintendent Kim Alexander. The board also hired Jonathan Haseloff, the team's defensive coordinator, as the new head coach and Chuck Cathey, another assistant, as athletic director.
Cathey and Haseloff have both been coaches on the Roscoe staff for over a decade and both have coached in the basketball and track programs as well. Because of their longevity and familiarity with the overall athletic program, Alexander said hiring them for the new positions was "kind of a no-brainer."
Williams, a Roscoe native who was a star athlete at the school in the early 1980s and graduated from Roscoe High School in 1983, said he will remain here to work in his family's farming business full time.
"I was born and raised in Roscoe and my dad and brother farm here. I knew that one day it was something I wanted to go back to," he said. "I just wanted to be working with my brother and dad. It's something that's been on my mind for awhile and I just felt it was the right time to do this."
Williams has compiled a 116-29 record as the Plowboys' head coach, averaging just under 10 victories a season. Roscoe never had a losing record while making the playoffs every year and winning at least nine games every year from 2000 to 2008 and capturing eight outright or co-district championships.
Perhaps the most amazing stat of Williams' head coaching career is that the Plowboys lost a total of just five district games in his 12 years, going 59-5 over that time.
Before accepting the head coaching position, he was an assistant coach at Roscoe for 11 years after being hired following his graduation from Angelo State University.
Roscoe's best year under Williams was 2000, when the Plowboys went 13-1 and reached the state quarterfinals. Roscoe also went 12-1 in 2001 and 2007, advancing to the regional round both years.
Williams also has been part of the only two Roscoe football teams to ever play in the state championship game, first as a star player in 1982 and later as an assistant coach in 1995.
For the past three years Williams has coached his son, Garrison, who was the team's starting quarterback this past season and earned all-state recognition at both quarterback and as a kick returner. He will also be playing in two high school all-star games this summer.
In addition to his duties as head football coach and athletic director, Williams has led the Plowboys' hugely-successful track program since 1987. Under his leadership Roscoe won the Class 1A state title in 1995, one of just two state championships in the school's history, as well as numerous district, area and regional titles. Individually, dozens of his athletes have not only qualified for the state meet in Austin but also returned home with top-three medals.
Williams said it was hard to single out one particular thing that stood out in his 23 years as a coach at Roscoe. "Just all the kids that I've coached. That's been the highlight," he said.
"I take some pride in the fact that we've averaged nearly 10 wins a year. But the main thing has been seeing the kids that have come through here, and seeing how well they've turned out."
Alexander said he had known of Williams' plans to get out of coaching for the past two or three years. "We hate to see him leave," he said. "But he said that it was something that he was considering, so it wasn't a big surprise.
"He's been just a really great coach, probably one of the most successful coaches in Texas. And he's a really good person, too."
