Handicapping the UIL state track meets.
By Evan Ren,Daniel Youngblood
Posted May 14,2010 at 12:25 a.m.
CLASS 2A
WIN
Ray Gutierrez, Coahoma, 110 hurdles — If Gutierrez doesn’t hit a hurdle, he should battle Brent Giddens of Hughes Spring for the top spot. Gutierrez has the top qualifying time of 14.84.
PLACE
Jesse Rodriguez, Cisco, 300 hurdles — A solid medal contender, but there will be plenty of competition here. Rodriguez, who qualified at 39.58, is one of five hurdlers in this event who check in between 39.16 and 39.86.
Slade Cupps, Jim Ned, high jump — An effort of 6-6 or better will likely medal in this event, and that is what Cupps qualified with at regional. Bronze seems the most likely result.
Bradley Toler, Cisco, pole vault — Produced a season-best 14-6 at the regional meet, but likely will need 15-0 or better to medal. Must be considered a contender.
Isaac Brown, Bangs, triple jump — A solid medal contender, Brown is in perhaps the most competitive 2A event, with six competitors qualifying between 45-0 1/2 and 45-7. Brown enters at No. 3 with a 45-4.
SHOW
Lupe Abrego, Coahoma, 200 — A sub-22 will likely be good for bronze here. But Abrego qualified at 22.32, meaning he has a serious challenge ahead.

State track: Big Country 2A athletes find medals hard to snag.
By Evan Ren
Posted May 15, 2010 at 7:01 p.m.
AUSTIN—"For Big Country 2A track teams, it was largely a quiet day of misses and a few disappointments.
Aside from a combined three medals won by Merkel’s Carly Szabo and Eastland’s Melanie Barrera on Day 2 of the Texas state track and field championships, no additional hardware was brought home by area 2A athletes.
At least two medal favorites came away empty handed, beginning with Coahoma’s Ray Gutierrez, who entered with the top qualifying time in the 2A boys 110-meter hurdles. He finished fourth at 15.07, 0.23 of a second slower than his qualifying time.
Gutierrez, along with 200-meter fifth-place finisher, Lupe Abrego, were the first Coahoma boys track athletes to reach Austin in more than 10 years.
Both were disappointed with their outcomes, but Coahoma coach Stacy Martin wasn’t hearing any of it.
“If we had told people that we were going to have two kids at the state track meet this year, nobody would have believed us,” Martin said. “So we’re happy with the way the kids ran and happy with the way they finished.
“Considering the environment, with them never being here before, they performed very well.”
Other near-misses included Cisco’s Jesse Rodriquez, with a fourth-place finish in the Class 2A 300 hurdles at 39.41.
In the team standings, Daingerfield took the boys 2A state title with 72 points, followed by New Waverly at 61. Coahoma had the best showing among Big Country teams with six points and a 34th-place finish.
