"Brook Witt, hurdler, Sr., Cisco girls track — Qualified for state by winning the 300 hurdles at the Region I-2A meet in Odessa with a personal-best time of 45.28.

She also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles at 15.3, and ran a 60.1 leg for the 1,600 relay team."

Handicapping the UIL state track meets.

By Evan Ren,Daniel Youngblood

CLASS 2A

WIN

Carly Szabo, Merkel, 100 hurdles, high jump — A two-time state champion in the 100 hurdles who finished second in the event last year, Szabo enters with the top qualifying time at 14.74 — just ahead of Alvord’s Jordan Ward (14.77). She enters with a third-best qualifying height of 5-4 in the high jump, but has cleared 5-6 this year, which could challenge for gold.

Emily Edwards, Cisco, Discus — The defending state champion was upset by her own teammate, Capri Berry in the regional meet, and enters with the No. 4 qualifying toss of 121-7. But Edwards is capable of throwing 137-0, and she’s experienced state meet pressure before. She’s the pick for gold again.

PLACE

Melanie Barrera, Eastland, 800 and 400 — A threat to medal in both events, having qualified at 2:23.01 in the 800 and 58.64 in the 400. Both of her times are the fourth-best in their respective fields.

Brooke Witt, Cisco, 300 hurdles — Peaking at the right time, she qualifyied with a personal-best 45.28 at the regional meet. However, she will likely have to eclipse 44.8 to win gold; bronze or silver is more likely.

Capri Berry, Cisco, discus — Came out of nowhere to upset state champion Emily Edwards in the regional meet, and enters with the No. 3 qualifying throw of 122-4. Solid pick to medal.

Ashley Feaster, Comanche, shot put — Should be considered a medal contender but will need more than her regional distance of 39-5 1/2 to do it. This year’s field is extremely competitive, with three girls entering with throws of more than 39-10.

SHOW

Chelsy Lipsy, Bangs, 800 — Enters the meet more than three seconds off the pace, which will probably take bronze. Likely to finish in the middle of the pack.

Bangs 800 relay — With the No. 8 qualifying time of 1:47.38, the Lady Dragons will have to do a considerable amount of improving to medal — more than two seconds for bronze.

Bangs 1,600 relay — The same group of girls who clinched Bangs’ regional team title have an even bigger challenge here. They enter with a time of 4:06.23 — nearly four seconds slower than the top qualifying time and more than two seconds slower than what will take to earn bronze.

Eastland 1,600 relay — The Eastland girls, who are more than three seconds behind the No. 7 qualifier (Bangs), will need to pull off one of the biggest upsets in recent memory to get to the medal stand.

Tessa Williamsson, Eastland, pole vault — With Buna’s Nicole Casper and Blanco’s Abbey Weaver qualifying at 11-6, and Navarro’s Sarah Korn checking in at 11-0, Williamson will have to be considerably better than her 10-0 regional height to medal. Her best is 10-6.

State track: Big Country 2A athletes find medals hard to snag.

By Evan Ren
Posted May 15, 2010 at 7:01 p.m.

AUSTIN—"For Big Country 2A track teams, it was largely a quiet day of misses and a few disappointments.

Aside from a combined three medals won by Merkel’s Carly Szabo and Eastland’s Melanie Barrera on Day 2 of the Texas state track and field championships, no additional hardware was brought home by area 2A athletes.

Cisco’s Brooke Witt was another medal contender who didn’t have her best performance in Austin. Witt, who took the girls 300 hurdles Region 1-2A meet with a personal-best time of 45.28, saw her time rise by more than a second Saturday, handing in a sixth-place effort of 46.47.

Witt was in second place behind eventual winner LaQuita Woods of Altair Rice (44.29), when her trailing leg clipped the second-to-last hurdle, costing her enough speed eliminate her from the medal stand.

“She was crushed after the race because she worked hard after having a (knee) injury last year and she had run so well in regionals,” Cisco coach Lori Whatley said.

“We’re used to lightweight hurdles in high school, and you can (often) keep on running after you hit one. But the collegiate hurdles they have here are a lot heavier and when you hit one, it’s a game-changer.”

The Bangs girls had two close calls of their own, with fourth-place finishes in both the 1,600 relay (Destanie Finley, Hillary Evans, Danielle Denbow, Chelsy Lipsey, 4:01.78) and the 800 relay (Kirstin Reichenau, Evans, Finley, Denbow, 1:46.22).

Both could be considered surprises, considering the Lady Dragons had the seventh and eighth-fastest qualifying times in each race, respectively.

“Both teams ran the best they’ve run all year,” Bangs girls track coach Michelle Allen said. “You can’t ask for any more than that.

“I’ve got (most) of them coming back next year and some good little freshman coming up, so I can’t wait for next season.”

Centerville and Altair Rice split the 2A girls team title with 36 points. Eastland was the top-scoring area team with 19 points in 10th place."

Lady Loboe Track.
Emily Edwards, discus, Sr., Cisco girls track -- Won her second straight Class-2A state discus title with a throw of 130-2 -- just two inches better than second-place La'Tricia Griffin of Van Vleck.

Edwards' teammate, Capri Berry, took fourth at 122-2.

"Also taking gold was defending state 2A girls discus champion Emily Edwards of Cisco, with a throw of 130-2m just two inches beyond second-place finisher La’Tricia Griffin of Van Vleck. Edwards’ teammate, Capri Berry, to whom she lost at the regional meet, took fourth at 122-2.

“I was very happy, but it would have been awesome to see (Berry) get on the medal stand,” Cisco coach Lori Whatley said. “But it really doesn’t matter what color of medal you get here — you just want to get a medal."
