Merkel’s Austin Hilburn fired a first-round 68 at Ratliff Ranch Golf Links in Odessa Monday, headlining a list of three Big Country golfers in the top five at the the Region I-2A golf tournament.

Coleman’s Martin Ryan (70) is in second, while Jacob Olague of Hawley is in a three-way tie for third.

Hilburn’s Badgers are in third place in the team race after shooting a first-day 316. They trail only Wall (313) and Sonora (298) heading into the tournament’s final day today.


Jim Ned shot a 366 Monday at Nueva Vista Golf Club in Midland, and is behind only Kermit (350) heading into today. Eastland, which shot a 374, is also within striking distance.

Eastland’s Mackenzie Stone had the best finish of any area golfers, firing a 77, which was good for a second place tie. Early’s Tylene Middleton is in fourth with a 78, while Jordan Hammond of Colorado City is in fifth with an 81.

I-2A golf: Coleman's Martin wins regional; Eastland girls qualify.

MIDLAND — Eastland advances to the Class 2A girls state golf tournament by finishing second Tuesday at the Region I-2A meet.

Lady Mavericks golfer Mackenzie Stone was second overall at 77-76—153 at Nueva Vista Golf Club to lead here to a 374-371—745 total. Kermit won the tournament at 350-359—709. Jim Ned was third, three shots behind Eastland. The two top teams qualified for the 2A state tournament.

Also among top 10 finishers were Early’s Tylene Middleton in fifth (78-89—167), Jim Ned’s Madison Myers in sixth (86-83—169) and Colorado City’s Jordan Hammond tied for eighth (81-92—173).

Idalou (382-386—768) and Childress (387-391—778) rounded out the top five.

Coleman’s Ryan Martin shot a second-round 70 at Odessa’s Ratliff Ranch Golf Links to finish at 140 to take the I-2A boys title and qualifiy for Austin.

Austin Hilburn of Merkel, who led after the first day with a round of 68, fell to sixth place after shooting 78 to finish at 146. Jim Ned’s Ben Avery (75-72—147) was just behind him in seventh. Hawley’s Jacob Olague finished tied for 10th with a total of 152.

Sonora took the team title (298-307—605) while Wall finished second (313-301—614). Merkel (316-330—646), Olney (319-329—648) and Denver City (325-327—652) rounded out the top five.
