NBA Playoffs 2010: How The Aging Celtics and Spurs Can Still Win
by Jon Star
5)The Playoff Road
"Unlike the Spurs, who sit as the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference, the Celtics sit in the No. 4 spot, and possess home court advantage at least for the first round.
The Celtics may be staring down the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round, but having that home court advantage in the opening series against Miami could be the catalyst the Celtics need."

6)Spurs Defense Strong
"The Spurs may still have their offensive hiccups and inconsistencies, but what the four-time champions still do as well as anyone, is play defense.
The Spurs allowed only 96.3 points per game this season, second-best of any Western Conference playoff team.
Add in Parker, who will find his rhythm in the first round after missing so much time due to injury, and the Spurs have the means to limit almost anyone they could see on the road to the Finals."

Jason Kidd passes on playoff advice to Roddy Beaubois.
Posted at 1:30 PM on Thu., Apr. 15, 2010 |Todd Archer/Reporter
"Roddy Beaubois played only 7 minutes, 22 seconds Wednesday against San Antonio, but the rookie guard figures to play a larger role in the first round of the upcoming playoffs.
"I cannot wait because it's my first one," Beaubois said. "I'm really, really excited."
Beaubois' teammates have advised the rookie on what to expect: more intense, more physical, faster, harder. He watched some playoff games last year but admits he wasn't into that much. Jason Kidd wasn't a rookie when he played in his first playoff game. It was his third season and first in Phoenix after the trade from Dallas.
On April 25, 1997, Phoenix, which started out 0-16, beat Seattle in Game 1. Rex Chapman scored 42 points.
"We went to Game 5," Kidd said of the Suns' run. "I couldn't ask for a better situation for understanding big games and also playoff situations."
And Kidd has passed on some advice to Beaubois to help the rookie.
"You can tell them what to expect but everybody is different," Kidd said, "but the biggest thing I tell him is each possession counts for something. In the regular season you might be able to get away with a turnover here or there or a blown coverage. Here the little things are important, that's what I would tell him. And enjoy it, have fun because not a lot of people have to that opportunity to participate in the playoffs."

History, hostility make Mavericks-Spurs rivalry an appealing matchup.
01:25 AM CDT on Friday, April 16, 2010
Column by TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News | tarcher@dallasnews.com
"Eighty-two games down, who knows how many more to go for the Mavericks.
With Wednesday’s win against San Antonio, the Mavericks wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. They finished with 55 wins, marking the fifth time they have had at least that many. They enter the playoffs against the Spurs with a five-game winning streak.
And none of it matters. Well, it will matter only if there is a Game 7, but that’s about it.
“It’s the now, the present and the future, so this is an exciting time,” Jason Kidd said. “Again we’re a veteran ballclub so I think for everybody to get out of this game healthy is key. Now we have to focus on what we have to do and that’s try to win 16 games. But we first have to win one at a time.”
Yes, before the City of Dallas releases its plan for a championship parade like it did a couple of years ago when the Mavericks were thoroughly beating Miami only to see the Heat return to American Airlines Center and leave with an NBA title in six games, enjoy this series with San Antonio.
It might not be the NBA’s sexiest matchup. It likely won’t get big-time television play because it’s not about Kobe or LeBron. But it as good as an in-state rivalry can be. It has a history. It has Mark Cuban ripping the Riverwalk. It has Jason Terry throwing a punch in the nether region. It has Hall of Famers, like Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki on one side and Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker on the other. It has two towns that seem to agree on their love of the Cowboys but not much else.
"It should be a great national rivalry because every game with the Spurs - even the preseason games - people take personally,” Cuban said. “So yeah, it's important. It's a huge rivalry. It'll be played like a finals game not just a playoff game because bragging rights are important in the state of Texas. If you lose a series, you hear about it all the time. I'm sure the Spurs are sick of hearing about it when we win."
The Mavericks have won the last two playoff series between these teams. This will be the fourth time in the last eight years they will have met in the postseason. Duncan, Ginobli, Parker and Nowitzki have been the constants on the court. Gregg Popovich has been the constant off it. Rick Carlisle is one of three coaches in this series with Avery Johnson and Don Nelson.
“It’s why you play, it’s why you coach,” Carlisle said. “There’s a lot going on. There’s a lot of attention to it, but the level of competition brings out the best in everybody and you want to be a part of that.”
The regular season is about positioning. The Mavericks have put themselves in position to be in position. At the beginning of the season the Western Conference was viewed as the Lakers and everybody else. Lately, not so much in part because of injuries to Andrew Bynum as well as inconsistent play. But then the rest of the contenders have health issues too: Portland’s Brandon Roy, Utah’s Carlos Boozer, Denver’s George Karl and Kenyon Martin.
The Mavericks are at their healthiest.
“I think the West is wide open,” Nowitzki said. “There’s a lot of great team out there. The Lakers, if they’re healthy with Bynum and everybody, I think they’re still the favorites, but everybody else is bunched up on the same level. Anything is possible.”

In wild west, Mavs know they could go the distance -- or go home early.
01:25 AM CDT on Friday, April 16, 2010
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
esefko@dallasnews.com
"Mark Cuban needed only a microsecond to answer the question.
Of the eight playoff teams in the Western Conference, he was asked, how many could be playing in June or have their season finished before April is done?
"Eight," he said.
From the Lakers down to the Thunder and all points in between, the West figures to be wilder than ever when the NBA playoffs open Saturday.
The Mavericks are right there with everybody, optimistic about their chances to beat San Antonio – the best-of-seven starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at American Airlines Center – and go deep in the playoffs.
They also know any hiccup could doom them to an early exit.
"I totally agree," Dirk Nowitzki said recently when analyzing the playoffs. "We can beat anybody. But if we're not consistent, and we don't get stops, we could be a first-round exit."
That's not a statement made out of lack of commitment or faith in his team. Nowitzki is as confident as he's ever been about this bunch. He sees real opportunity, even if the reality of the situation is that everybody's vulnerable in the West.
"That doesn't change the fact that we're the most dominant team, the most talented team, I've ever been on," he said. "But you can say that the whole Western Conference is better, too. There's really not a matchup you want to see. That's the nature of the West. You just got to beat whoever you face."
After all the infighting in the West, the playoff bracket is full of intriguing matchups. The top-seeded Lakers, with Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Jordan Farmar fighting injuries, must face the young, athletic Oklahoma City Thunder, who haven't had a significant injury all season.
The second-seeded Mavericks and Spurs will be seeing each other for the third time in five postseasons. The Mavericks won the last two, which means absolutely nothing this time around.
Phoenix's win at Utah on Wednesday gave the Suns the third seed, and they are one of the league's hottest teams but must face Portland, which is dangerous even without All-Star Brandon Roy, who will undergo knee surgery today.
And in 4 vs. 5, Denver will play without coach George Karl and with a gimpy Kenyon Martin against Utah, which roared down the stretch until losing at home to the Suns to give up the No. 3 seed.
The standings ebbed and flowed wildly right to the end and the Mavericks know as well as anybody how fleeting a hot streak like their five-game run going into the playoffs can be.
"You learn that quick," Nowitzki said. "Sometimes, times are great when you win 13 in a row. But times are never as good as they seem. And then you go through a phase when you lose two or three in a row and you're like, 'How the hell did we ever win 13 in a row, and now we can't get a stop and can't make a shot?'
"You go through ups and downs. All teams do."
While the Eastern Conference may be just as tough or tougher at the top with Cleveland and Orlando, there is no denying the West is stronger top to bottom. All eight playoff teams won at least 50 games, something that has happened only once, in the 2007-08 season.
Portland coach Nate McMillan believes there's a reason why it's taken 50 wins to make the West playoffs in two of the last three seasons.
"The West has just gotten better over the last 10 years, with free agents coming to the West and some of these teams have been able to stack their rosters," McMillan said. "San Antonio and Dallas and teams like that, and the Lakers, they're always there. Now, through the draft and some trades, teams like ourselves and Oklahoma City are much better clubs, very capable."
Which is why the battles over the next six weeks in the Western Conference will be so riveting."
Staff Writer Eddie Sefko handicaps the Western Conference playoffs.
Team Odds Comment
1.Lakers....5/2 Spit the bit since quarter pole (11-9), but still horse to beat
2.Suns......3/1 Once lapped by field, now are everybody's darkhorse
3.Mavericks 4/1 Ultra-dangerous with carrot dangling in front of nose
4.Spurs.....4/1 Does sly jockey Popovich know how to ride, or what?
5.Jazz......6/1 Blew No. 3 seed, but have a stud in Deron Williams
6.Thunder..12/1 If young colt conquers nerves at the gate, watch out
7.Nuggets..15/1 Sadly, without jockey as George Karl battles cancer
8.Blazers..18/1 Stuck on muddy track without leader, Brandon Roy

Jalen Rose: Mavericks have too much talent to lose to the Spurs.
11:31 PM CDT on Thursday, April 15, 2010
"Former NBA player Jalen Rose sat down with ESPN radio and discussed the upcoming playoff series between the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs. Here are some highlights:
How do you see this series between the Mavericks and Spurs playing out?
I think this is a great look for the Dallas Mavericks. I think this is a really good opportunity for them to eliminate the San Antonio Spurs in the first round for the second straight year. We know about the championship-pedigree that they have; Tony Parker coming back from an injury, Manu Ginobili has been lights out the second half of the season, Tim Duncan’s numbers, 18 [points] and 10 [rebounds] are still there, but obviously, he’s not the player and doesn’t have the effect on the game that he had in the past. DeJuan Blair has been a positive fight as a second round pick; he had 20, 20 last night but he is a rookie playing in his first playoff. He doesn’t have the necessary size and versatility to combat what he’s going to have to deal with Dirk Nowitzki.
I think the trade for the Mavs was great and at a perfect time. Of course, Carlisle has done a good job of making sure he uses Caron Butler and getting him involved during the regular season, so hopefully he can play big minutes and really shine in the postseason. Brendan Haywood is a double-double; they have Jason Terry back; Beaubois has had big games; Shawn Marion plays defense; Jason Kidd drops off assists. This Dallas Mavericks team is complete.
What happened to Richard Jefferson? He went from being an excellent player to looking completely lost out there.
Well, he’s in a different offense and a different system. The strength of Richard’s game is that he’s a slasher that can knock down open shots once he gets going. For the most part, he’s used to being a second, sometimes a third scoring option that allowed him to stay engaged on the ball in multiple possessions. Playing with the Spurs, he’s not that; he’s going to, at least, be the fourth option, so he wasn’t able to find his game early. And when you go to a team with a championship-pedigree, like the Spurs and a coach like Gregg Popovich, unfortunately, you don’t get time to find your rhythm and he never got time to find his rhythm this season.
What is Rick Carlisle going to do to prepare and deal with Ginobili? Does he put Butler or him or have Marion match-up with him and put Butler on Jefferson?
I think if bring Ginobili off the bench, it give coach Carlisle a little more flexibility to actually use either one of those guys on him because they both can play him. If he’s in the starting lineup, you might want to put Caron Butler on him, so that in transition, Manu has to scramble to find Caron, who is a half-court and a full court scorer. But also, Caron is a player that can play with his back to the basket and really take a physical toll on Manu, making him work on both ends of the floor.
How do you see this match ending up?
I wanted to say Mavs in 5 but I just think the Spurs have so much pride and they’ve been around the block and they’re going to find a way to just play a high level and compete, but I just think too much Mavs, too much talent, Mavs in 6.
Can we expect to see the Mavericks in the Western Conference finals?
You mentioned the major key: when you’re playing in the West, the toughest conference in the NBA, you have eight teams in the playoffs with 50 wins or more. What can tip the scales in your favor besides talent? Home court advantage. And that’s what the Mavs secured with the second seed. Now you have the home court advantage in round one and round two. It allows you to gain momentum to have a legitimate chance to play in the Western Conference finals and at that point, anything can happen."
