Everybody already knows this show was about the Odessa Tx Permian Panthers of the old days..

Im glad the show is coming back this year. They say its gonna start some time in May..
Here is a link of an awesome quarter final between most of the original Friday light Permian panthers vs a high powered Arlington( I know because back in those days if Arlington beat Lamar they had something and they beat them bad..) Arlington was up 28-7 at one point.. but Permian opened up their magic on them..It ended 35-35 but Permian moved on because of more penetrations..
Permian also had Loyd Hill (Tex Tech and Dallas Cowboys) Boobie Miles rb but Shawn Crow rb ..did most of the damage. Thats all I remember most of the day was " Shawn Crow on the carry" This is the year before FNL story.. Permian played with more enthusiasm than any team Ive ever seen.. Ofcourse the chant never ends while their kicking your teams a$$. "MO JO".. MO JO.. ! I say 87- 92 was Mo jo's strongest years.. 89(National champs) and 91 the best !

What a great game1987 Permian Arlington James "Boobie" Miles
www.youtube.com
The 1987 Texas High School 5A Quarterfinal game which sees the Odessa Permian Panthers come back to defeat the Arlington Colts. Many people have asked for James "Boobie" Miles footage, so here some is. ...

One thing you got to consider is Permian was the petroplex's pro team per say.. They didnt have a college or pro team so they flexed their muscle a little to much to get familys and athletes in there with offers of good oil field and associated jobs..
They were accused and put on probation for alledged violations of misconduct of working out the teams in the summer. Redistricting to get players to them. Paying under the table money to the coach..
I know the part about working out the team was true because my step brother from Odessa knew the coaches and told me back then the assistant coaches would take the team out in the summer and run them up and down the sand traps in the desert. Any way they took it serious and they were good..
It was like winning the lotto if you could take a team into Ratliff and win, not many teams did... Like some guy from Lamar said to me one time.. Its so intimidating their crowd has swallowed up even the guest side.
Everyone is chatting mo jo! Everyone is wearing back n white "even the refs" he cried! They love it when you bring your top rated team there so they can watch there team kick the crap out of them.. lol

Everybody used to complain how their coach was the first in the school to get a computer and had a new pickup truck.. And when this book came out the author was getting death threats because the team was placed on probation and they didnt like how this guy was saying all this stuff about Permian..
But things have smoothed over since they have a movie and notoriety of greatness.. And they were one of a kind.. They were beatable but not likely. Plano always seemed to have their # beatem here beatem there.. But nobody else..
I think sometimes teams get to intimidated before they step on the field.. Even though the apposing coaches try to down play it by saying their kids put on their pants the same way ours do.. Ofcourse thats before they got beat down..lol

Here is a clip where 89 National Champ Permian takes down Lamar for the quarter final. Between 88-91 Lamar was 50-6 and 4 of those losses were playoff losses. And three of the 4 playoff losses were to Permian and one to National champ Aldine 90. Ofcourse Aldine had lost to Permian in the 89 State championship and Permian was on probation the 1990 season go figure..

Looks like Riggins is gonna come help coach the Dillion East team.. They sure make it look like a po dunk Texas town but that is how hollywood portrays Texas.. But west Texas is a little more like that then the rest.. :tv_happy:

Here is a little clip of the Permian Carter game portrayed in the movie.. It wasnt a Statechampionship like they pretended but it was a semi final.. To beat Permian back then you had to be able to turn it on!

I guess they are imitating Plugerville with the little blue P on the helments. And when Plugerville played in a triple header at Texas Stadium last year I saw the character Buddy Garrity standing on the sidelines for real.. He must have gotten in his blood like the rest of us junkies!

Anybody that has the means, and has visited Austin, usually wants to move there. I know I would if I had enough money and didn't have to work anymore. I'd love for my son to go to Westlake or LT.

Permian 1991 State Champ:
Some tv guy just put this up.. A game I dont think I have anymore..Arlington Lamar #1 vs Permian #2 in 1991 both undefeated both nationally ranked. Permian was madder than hell coming off of probation from 1990. I think this was the qtr final for region 1. Lamar was coming off a State Championship loss to #1 National ranked Aldine..Permian was national champ in 89 but was on probation in 90.. Permian proved how good their defense was and how tuff it is to beat them at home way out west at Ratliff in Odessa tx.
Most of these plays shows Permian. Lamar had their moments but this is mostly what happened.. Lamar had the all American RB Shaun Walters(The pyle driver) averaging 200-300yd a game and gets 65yds in this one.. Mojo was brutal.. I actually think this team was better then the 89 National champ team.. Tam Hollingshead was the coach before coaching for Tex A&M and then when Slocum got canned and started coaching at Temple high a few years then Rockwall Heath HS and now is a coach for SMU..

This is highlights of Permians regular season..Some think the 89 team had a better offense but there is no question to me the 91 team had a better defense and I would put them up against any team anywhere..

I really like this series (the show) and now some of the actors are getting nominated. Its kinda bazar that the coach left the original school. And can any body tell me why coach Taylor sleeps on the wrong side of the bed. Is that common? This show is great I always DVR it and watch it about a week late.

That's what I like to hear. Honestly, both are good schools. I mean, I don't know much about LT besides football stuff, but I've never heard anything bad about them academically. Westlake is great, athletically and academically. I'm an '09 grad... had a 3.8 GPA, still didn't make the Top 50%. And my junior year (not sure if it still holds true or not) we had the #1 Physics program in the country.

One thing that I think would make Westlake more appealing is that it's closer to Austin itself. LT is kinda far out, and if you wanna spend time in the city itself, you're looking at a 10 or 15 minute drive at least, depending on how far into LT you are. Could be as much as twenty. I'm really not sure where the district lines are drawn.

And yeah... the football is great too. :)

Good luck getting the money and not having to work anymore. ;)

As for this SHOW... I've watched the first two episodes and that was it. Watched the Austin Series Premiere at a movie theater. Thought it was ok, except for the girl sitting two seats over who kept telling anyone who'd listen that she was a "professional extra" and was in the show. But when I watched the second episode on tv a couple weeks later, I just didn't care for it. Haven't watched more than a few minutes since.

LOVE the movie though, a lot of which was filmed at Westlake HS (little-known fact).

This is a video that is old as dirt of the 1989 Permian National champ team. The team they are playing in the blue is Aldine a team they beat in 89 State Championship of Texas. In The following year 1990 Aldine was the state and national Champs.

Ive dvr'd the last Friday Night Lights but I assume they didnt beat the Dillion Panthers or the show would be much longer.. That show is pretty addicting but im ready for High school football. You know how it is once its starts it will be no time till it hits the playoffs and is over.. Thats why we need one more game.. National champs !
