Strong bullpen performance helps Rangers complete sweep vs. Royals.
12:03 AM CDT on Monday, May 10,2010
By JEFF WILSON / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
ARLINGTON–"This is a team that could use a day off. Especially the bullpen.
With good reason.
The Rangers knocked off Kansas City, 6-4, behind five more scoreless innings by the bullpen, to complete a four-game sweep at Rangers Ballpark.
The win also completed a stretch of 20 games without a day off, but one in which the Rangers climbed from last place in the American League West, three games back April 20, to a one-game lead Sunday. They went 13-7 during the stretch, winning 13 of the last 18.
"All around, we've played pretty solid baseball," said outfielder David Murphy, who went 3-for-4 on Sunday and 8-for-17 in the series. "Pitching and defense is the way it's done around here, and if we're going to win, that's how we're going to do it."
Rangers pitchers produced a 3.93 ERA during the stretch and held opponents to three runs or fewer in eight games, all victories. Three of the losses were by one run and two were by two. The widest margin in a loss was four.
The primary pitching concern is with the opening day starter Scott Feldman. He took two losses in four starts in the last 20 games, and he was done after four innings Sunday.
He gave up four runs and needed 100 pitches to get his 12 outs. Command continues to be his issue.
"I've got to get better," said Feldman, whose ERA rose to 5.84. "Baseball is one of those games where there's ups and downs, and you're hot and cold. I'm in a bit of a slump, and I've just got to figure it out."
The offense contributed during the stretch, hitting .263 and averaging 5.1 runs per game. Ian Kinsler returned for the final 10 games, hitting .324, and the Rangers withstood the loss of Nelson Cruz (strained hamstring) on April 27.
Elvis Andrus became the leadoff hitter and has flourished in the role. He was 19-for-67 (.284) during the 20-game stretch, making 18 starts, and had 15 walks to produce a .415 on-base percentage.
The Rangers hit the off day as a largely patient group after drawing 16 walks against the Royals. They have adapted at the plate to do whatever they need to do in a given game.
"We're getting better," said third baseman Michael Young, who had an RBI single in the eighth inning Sunday after Max Ramirez put the Rangers ahead, 5-4, with a two-out double in the fifth.
"We aren't where we want to be as a team yet. We have a lot of adjustments and improving to do. But we are getting a lot closer to where we want to be. Hopefully we can continue that on Tuesday."
That's when the Rangers open a three-game series against second-place Oakland.
"You can feel it around the clubhouse, confidence building," said right-hander Rich Harden, who started four victories in the 20-game stretch."

Cowlishaw: Big bangers are out, small ball's in for 1st-place Rangers.
12:41 AM CDT on Monday, May 10, 2010
Column by TIM COWLISHAW/The Dallas Morning News|wtcowlishaw@dallasnews.com
ARLINGTON–"After reverting to old-style Rangers baseball for a 13-12 win Thursday night, the new-look Rangers maintained control of matters for the weekend, completing a four-game sweep of Kansas City with Sunday's 6-4 victory at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
Elvis Andrus turned a walk into a run without the helpof a hit, coming in on Vladimir Guerrero's sacrifice fly in the third as the Rangers completed a four-game sweep of Kansas City by winning with only two extra base hits - a pair of doubles. The only fireworks came in the fifth inning, apparently after a home run was struck in the kids' miniature park beyond the centerfield fence. Small ball continues to work wonders for the first-place Rangers.
Home runs aren't quite off limits, but they aren't the final answer to every question about Rangers' offense any more. Over the last 10 days, this team has gone 3-0 in games in which it failed to produce an extra-base hit.
On Sunday, doubles from David Murphy and Max Ramirez were the only extra-base hits required to finish the sweep.
When the bullpen is as good as it was Sunday – five scoreless innings and two hits allowed – it's not an avalanche of offense this team needs. Just the occasional timely hit. And that's what Murphy delivered.
If you were going to pick a hitter who really needed to come through against Kansas City, it was Murphy.
Nelson Cruz, the Rangers' best hitter the first three weeks of the season, is nearing the end of his disabled list stay. The Royals had four right-handed starters set to go for the series – a perfect get-well card for the left-handed bat of Murphy.
Murphy's 3-for-4 day Sunday included the biggest blow, a two-run double in the third inning that scored Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton. For the series, Murphy went 8-for-17 with four doubles to raise his average from .151 to .229.
"I knew all I needed to do was relax and slow it down at the plate," Murphy said. "That at-bat is one I may need to look at on tape if I ever get into a slump because it was a perfect at-bat for me."
Murphy's hit made it a 4-2 game. Even though Scott Feldman gave up the lead in the fourth, the bullpen kept the Royals locked down the rest of the way.
So it was left to a timely double from Ramirez to drive in the winning run in the fifth before Michael Young brought home an insurance run in the eighth.
These are not the Rangers of a year ago, even though this team has an opportunity to hold down first place in the West even longer.
The Rangers began Sunday ranked seventh in the American League in runs scored. They were 10th in homers and 11th in slugging percentage.
It's not what you'd expect from a team that has Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero in the middle of the order. And the numbers surely would be more impressive if Cruz had not been sidelined after his hot start.
But for those who have longed to see the Rangers find ways to win without bashing home runs, your team has arrived. They move runners, they take lots of pitches and they even execute double steals. Texas' ratio of 35 steals to 25 home runs illustrates the transformation.
More steals than homers?
Last year's totals (224 HR, 149 SB) marked the first time Texas' steals have been within 75 of their home runs since 1995.
"It's not old school. It's just the right way to play," second baseman Ian Kinsler said. "We know what it takes to win games. Hitting is about waiting. It's not about going out and getting the ball. You let it come to you."
The Rangers have the A's coming to town Tuesday for, yes, a first-place showdown in the West. Oakland won two of three from the Rangers last week and set the stage for its trip here with Dallas Braden's stunning perfect game Sunday afternoon against Tampa Bay.
Talk about winning the right way. You don't need a lot of runs when the opposition can't get a single base runner.
The Rangers did no such flirting with perfection Sunday. Safe to say against a last-place team like the Royals, that kind of thing was hardly necessary.
Just get a couple of timely hits and let the bullpen do the rest.
With rookie Neftali Feliz tied for the league lead with nine saves, there's a decidedly new game in town.
It doesn't produce as many fireworks. The win total has a chance to be something else entirely."

Rangers 6, Royals 4
Posted at 5:24 PM on Sun., May. 9, 2010 Evan Grant
ARLINGTON-"It cooled off in North Texas Sunday afternoon, but not on the field. The Rangers stayed red-hot finishing off their first four-game sweep in nearly three years with a 6-4 win over Kansas City.
This game was about ensemble members of the team. To wit:
• RHP Doug Mathis bailed out still shaky RHP Scott Feldman. After Feldman needed 100 pitches to work through four innings, Mathis, making his first appearance since April 29, pitched two scoreless innings. He predictably allowed the leadoff walk to the first hitter he faced in 11 days, then got a double-play grounder.
• The rest of the bullpen was perfect. Mathis, LHP Darren Oliver, RHP Darren O'Day and RHP Neftali Feliz combined to retire the last 11 batters of the game. Feliz was pitching for the third time in four days, a situation in which he failed badly the first time it was handed to him. On Sunday, he got three outs on 11 pitches. Feliz now has nine saves, tied with Kevin Gregg for the AL lead.
• C Max Ramirez may be forcing his way into a little more playing time. His two-out double in the fifth drove home the go-ahead run. He also managed to throw out Mike Aviles on a stolen base attempt in the sixth.
• CF Julio Borbon had a pair of hits in four at-bats, but OF David Murphy might make the Rangers' decision on playing time when Nelson Cruz returns from the DL on Thursday interesting. Murphy had three hits, including a two-run, two-out double. Murphy was 8-for-20 (.400) in the series with four doubles and four RBIs.
• 3B Michael Young reached base four times with a pair of walks and a pair of hits. Young is hitting .333 for May with a .429 OBP in May. He has taken six walks in the last five games.
• On the other end of the spectrum, there is still Feldman. Having switched his delivery to eliminate bringing his hands over his head during the windup, he still had issues. He allowed a two-out, two-run double to No. 8 hitter Mitch Maier in the second and a run-scoring double to No. 9 hitter Yuniesky Betancourt in the fourth."

Former Texas Tech pitcher Dallas Braden records 19th perfect game in MLB history.
06:58 PM CDT on Sunday, May 9, 2010
From wire reports
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—"Dallas Braden definitely owns the mound now.
Braden pitched the 19th perfect game in major league history on Sunday, shutting down the majors' hottest team and leading the Oakland Athletics to a 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Braden threw his arms in the air after Gabe Kapler grounded out to shortstop for the final out, his simmering feud with Yankees star Alex Rodriguez merely a footnote to the first perfect game for Oakland in 42 years.
The closest the Rays got to a hit was Jason Bartlett's liner to third leading off the game. Evan Longoria tried to bunt against Braden leading off the fifth, drawing boos from the small crowd.
"It's without a doubt a team effort," Braden said. "You got eight guys out there chasing balls and knocking balls down for me. So this is ours, not just mine, this is ours."
Before this gem, Braden was best known for his enraged reaction to Rodriguez walking across the mound on April 22. Still angry after the game, he told the slugger "to go do laps in the bullpen" if he wanted to traipse across a mound.
The squabble was still simmering last week. On Friday in Boston, Rodriguez said he didn't want to extend Braden's "extra 15 minutes of fame." But he struck a far more conciliatory tone Sunday.
"I've learned in my career that it's always better to be remembered for some of the good things you do on the field, and good for him," Rodriguez said before facing Boston. "He threw a perfect game. And, even better, he beat the Rays."
It was the majors' first perfect game since Mark Buehrle did it for the White Sox against the Rays on July 23, and the second no-hitter this season after Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez pulled it off in Atlanta on April 17.
Braden pitched the A's first perfect game since Hall of Famer Jim "Catfish" Hunter's gem on May 8, 1968, against the Minnesota Twins. Only 6,298 were there to witness it. Sunday's crowd at the Coliseum wasn't much better: 12,228.
Braden (4-2) wasn't fazed by anything, throwing two-strike changeups and getting quick outs against a Rays team that lost on the road for just the third time this year. He struck out six in the 109-pitch performance, throwing 77 strikes in his 53rd career start and first complete game.
Braden's teammates mobbed him when the Mother's Day masterpiece was over, leaving bats and gloves scattered on the field. The left-hander pointed to the sky in honor of his mom, Jodie Atwood, who died of cancer when he was a high school senior. He shared a long and tearful hug with his grandmother, Peggy Lindsey, who raised him, in front of the dugout.
"It hasn't been a joyous day for me in a while," Braden said. "With my grandma in the stands, it makes it a lot better."
Braden's perfect game was the sixth no-hitter in Oakland history. The 26-year-old Braden, a native of nearby Stockton, was a 24th-round draft pick by the A's in 2004.
Last Mother's Day, Braden was hit by a line drive by Vernon Wells.
"You know, a year later you don't expect anything like this," he said. "I'm just happy to be putting on the costume a year later."
The A's defense didn't even have to make a really tough play in fair territory.
Third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff sprinted to the dirt in front of Oakland's dugout to catch a foul popup by Dioner Navarro for the second out in the sixth. Kapler then fouled out on a 12-pitch at-bat on another ball caught by Kouzmanoff. Navarro fouled off five straight pitches before the popup.
Landon Powell — who caught the game with regular catcher Kurt Suzuki injured — Kouzmanoff and Ryan Sweeney each singled in runs for the A's, who added two unearned runs in the fourth after catcher Navarro's throwing error. Daric Barton had three hits and scored twice for Oakland.
James Shields (4-1) failed to beat the A's for the second time in 12 days after striking out 12 in a 10-3 win April 28.
NOTES:
The A's last no-hitter was by Dave Stewart on June 29, 1990, at Toronto. ... Maddon is open to the idea of Longoria playing every day this season. "I'm not opposed to it," Maddon said. "We'll look at it. If he's well, I believe he's capable of all the games." ... Rays LHP J.P. Howell, on the 15-day DL with a strained throwing shoulder, threw from 205 feet Saturday and felt 100 percent. He is set to throw another side session Tuesday in Anaheim then face live hitters in batting practice Friday back at home. ... Sidelined Tampa Bay OF Matt Joyce (strained right elbow) did some throwing Saturday and once he extends to 90 feet with no discomfort he will begin hitting again. ... A's C Kurt Suzuki, nursing a strained side muscle, hit in the cage and will face live pitching Monday with Triple-A Sacramento and then likely start for the River Cats at Oklahoma City on Tuesday before meeting the A's in Texas. ... A's CF Coco Crisp, yet to make his Oakland debut because of a broken left pinkie finger, has begun hitting off a tee."

Rangers are 10-1 in last 11 games catcher Matt Treanor has started.
12:10 AM CDT on Monday, May 10, 2010
By WILLIAM WILKERSON / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
"Though he may be hitless in his last 11 at-bats, Matt Treanor has helped Rangers pitchers come away with victories in 10 of the last 11 games he's started behind the plate. Texas has won 12 of his 17 starts this season.
"I don't know what to say," said Treanor, who didn't start the series finale against Kansas City on Sunday but entered in the eighth inning. "I guess I'm just not distracting the guys from doing what they do."
Ron Washington knows exactly what to say about the success his club has had with Treanor as the catcher.
"It says he is pretty good. He has a feel for the game and certainly executes the game plan well," Washington said. "It also says that he keeps the pitchers focused on what they have to do, and when they have gotten out of whack, he has been able to bring them back."
Treanor, 34, would like to produce more offensively. He's 3-for-27 in his last 10 games, which has dropped his average from .265 to .197. But the top priority for him will continue to be his management of the pitching staff."

ARLINGTON–"When Rangers left-hander Derek Holland suffered a right knee sprain on the first day of spring training, it opened the door for others to secure a rotation spot.
Now, five weeks into the season, Holland finally has reclaimed his rotation spot, with Matt Harrison headed to the disabled list with tendinitis in his left biceps tendon.
Holland is scheduled to start Wednesday against Oakland at Rangers Ballpark.
"When you've got an opportunity, you've got to take it, and that's what I want to make sure I do," Holland, 23, said.
Holland is 4-1 with a 0.93 ERA in six starts at Triple-A Oklahoma City. In 33 games with the Rangers last season, he was 8-13 with a 6.12 ERA.
He'll follow fellow lefty C.J. Wilson in the rotation. Manager Ron Washington said Holland will stay in the rotation unless somebody gets hurt."
