by their big play QB playing baseball all summer? Westlake runs a gun run offense and needs a mobile QB. They have one fast QB who plays baseball and made all-state and the other is a pocket passer that doesn't fit the new offense that Allman installed last year.

I trust the coaches to make the right decision. But in short, no... I don't think it'll hurt us. I think it will keep him in shape.

When does baseball have you in shape for football? He's not running AAU or USA track. If Westlake can play the pass better, I think they will beat Lake Travis. They were a different team after Allman got the Westlake folks on his back after he conservatived away a win vs a very inferior Bastrop club that the Chaps should have beat. Price matured in the new offense and his running and passing along with a defense that stonewalled all opponents running games in Region 4 and a ground bound Cinco Ranch had no shot. Trinity should not have won, but they had been hitting big plays in the passing game all season. The San Antonio begged to get Westlake out of Region 4 so that they might actually have a shot to have an all SA quarterfinals. With 3 starters back on the offensive line, two good WRs and a fast QB and RB, Westlake might win state out of Region 2, if they can get by STP if they have to match up. That is a KILLER non-district schedule! If you get through murderer's row alive and healthy, you should slaughter those WEAK AISD teams!!!

Preston Dewey is more than capable of running Allman's system.

Who is he? I only saw 3 play last year, Price, Guilbeau and the tall passing QB. Their offense just seems way more dangerous with a running QB like Price, but #9 is way faster and quicker. His offense killed those SA running teams with a balanced attack and a duel threat QB. Will the QB battle split the team after having Price the last two years? He was as a winner taking them to state and the quarters. He was a much bigger QB and combined the strengths of both the new QBs. Better have that act together vs Lake Travis who has their QB back.

Aren't there some good shuffleboard leagues for you to take in and dominate? You obviously don't realize the change in quarterbacks won't affect the Chaps all that much. You can ask WestlakeTech, Del Valle and others here.. nobody has more info on the Chaps than I do.

Honestly, our passing game isn't what concerns me against LT. It's the defense, specifically the secondary.

Secondary is good, it's the coverages. Very good to get 8 guys in the box vs running teams, but leaves the flats open just like cover 3, but it doesn't give up the big play, but will allow patient spread teams to dink and dunk 80 yards in a bunch of plays and wear down the defense. I have been watching Westlake in Austin since 1984. I don't think any of you know more bout the Chaps than I do and I'm an 87 Reagan grad. Westlake Quiz:
1. What defense did they run before they switched in 87?
2. Although they are hounded for not doing well in region 2, what year did they win region 2 and in what class?
3. Who was the best running QB in Westlake history, a)Saxton b)Mangum c)Rodgers d)Schroeder e)Kean f)Price g)Gruber
4. Best passing QB DREW BREES
5. Best WR Ryan Reed
6. Best family a) Schenk b)Hager c)Street d)Campbell e)Peays d)McKinney e)Grigg...
7. Most exciting player a)Nunez b)Saxton c)Jeremy Peterson d)Peays twins any number of other WRs or Chad Schroeder?
8. Best RB a)Daryl Schenk b)Nunez c)Fullford d)Robin e)Swope...
9. Best defense, 96!
10. Best offense 94 and 96.
11. Who was the DC that switched the system in 87 and where did he come from? The new defense is very sim, but different.
12. Base Westlake offense for years before last season?
All in fun

It should be interesting against LT. Gilbeaux is more mobile and not as accurate of a passer and Dewey is not as mobile but a better passer. I think that either will struggle against LT with the huge spotlight of starting their first varsity game against LT at DKR. Westlake will be very good this year, but LT has a huge advantage in the first game at the QB position and all of the returning experience. Should be fun to see.

Allman's offense is a running attack, he said that it was like Florida's. He should use Guilbeau because he and Van Grammann and the other backs with 3 OL starters back can give the Chaps an explosive offense that will be like Abilene, save with a better passing game. The running game will give you big plays in the passing attack and the Westlake QB and RB are FAST and will take it to the house and that is what makes them so dangerous with the WRs they have back. This offense is not LT's, its a run based spread and using Dewey makes them far less effective. 5A titles are won by running teams for the most part. Last Carroll title squad had a 2000 RB in Newton and a 1000 yard QB and both went over 1000 in the regular season. 96 Westlake team had their best defense and most balanced offense. Guilbeau and Van Grammann are the Westlake versions of Sims and Sims from Abilene. This is the 2nd year in Allman/Rhodes systems, but Guilbeau is the guy with the playing time and the difference maker. Having him take snaps every play is like when they had Chad Schroeder, who could go all the way on any play, like Eric Crouch. Every body knew Price was a passer, but they didn't know that that big guy could run and that really hurt teams in the playoffs, because they never knew what was coming!!! Spreading the field with all those weapons should give Chaps fans chills and opponents nightmares!

1. Personally, I'm a 2009 Westlake Grad... so I wasn't even around back then.
2. We never have. We won Region 1 (4A) in 1985. But all of our other Region wins have been in Region 4.
4. I didn't live in Austin when Brees was playing, but the best in my opinion was Foles.
5. Best reciever I've seen was Staton Jobe.
12. Hmmm... I think I heard people mention it before, I just can't think of it off the top of my head.

well im a 97 graduate from SM,i played against Drew Brees ,up n close and those westlake teams of old im sorry to say were better than the teams from westlake the last 10 years, that 96 Chaps d-fence was nuthin to mess with, and i got the scars on my knee from the illegal chop block i took that game to prove it,Its all coaching, has anybody ever thought about how Bastrop became so good in the last 5 years, coach Schroder from westlake instilled a system of play and standard, and now there still running with his same system to this day.

True... but didn't Schroeder get the boot from Bastrop? Or quit? (either way, I'm pretty sure he's not there anymore, if I remember correctly).

Yeah, I'm always wishing I could have seen that '96 State Champion team.

I'm one who hopes the Chaps can turn the tables on LT. But Region 2 will be loaded to the T with STP, Desoto, Garland, Woodlands, etc. Till then, ease up on the cool aide :)

Price was the best QB I saw in person last year. His speed and power out of the zone read, and his ability to thread the middle are what set him apart in my mind. You just don't grow QBs like that on trees, but you guys may suprise me.

What I liked about Price was his scrambling ability. But for precision passing, I'd pick Foles every time.

The Chaps are going to miss Price until one of those two QB's takes control of the team. My money is on Gilbeaux starting by the time district rolls around.

Guilbeau was the MVP of both spring games he has been in. He is a playmaker and should start. Check out the links from the Picayune.Guilbeau is the man
2009 Spring game he was just a fish.Star QB
I guess they could do like STP and rotate every play, but I still say stick with the PLAYER! He can't help it that he has all that talent and can play baseball. He can't help it if he's better than a senior.
