26 to go: Breaking them down.
Comments By Jeff Caplan.
"The Dallas Mavericks are one of four teams with 40 wins, yet the only one with a lone All-Star.
They are 10 wins away from an 11th consecutive season with at least 50 wins. They are in second place in the Western Conference, six games behind the San Antonio Spurs and 2 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers.
They have one starter that has played six games and another that has played two games.
They have won 13 of their last 14 games, and have win streaks of 12 and 10.
They have Monday off, one day of practice and then a grind of 26 games in 51 days that begins Wednesday night at home against the Utah Jazz.
With that, here's a breakdown of the final 26:
Home games: 12
Longest homestand: 3 (March 18-24: vs. Spurs, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves)
Road games: 14
Longest road trip: 6 (March 26-April 3: Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, Lakers, Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers)
vs. Western Conference: 21
vs. Eastern Conference: 5 (last vs. New York Knicks, March 10)
vs. Southwest Division: 5 (Memphis Grizzlies, Spurs, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets - 2)
vs. the Lakers:2 (March 12 at AAC; March 31 at Staples Center)
vs. +.500 teams: 12
vs. -.500 teams: 12
vs. .500 teams: 2 (Suns)
Time to pad the win column:
Feb. 23-March 7 (vs. Jazz, at Washington Wizards, at Toronto Raptors, at Philadelphia 76ers, vs. Indiana Pacers, vs. Grizzlies, at Timberwolves)
Time to buckle down:
March 9-20 (at Hornets, vs. Knicks, vs. Lakers, at Trail Blazers, at Golden State, vs. Spurs, vs. Warriors)."

Newberry: This Mavericks team has a different feel.
By Andy Newberry.
"If you're one of those North Texas fans that gets disappointed easily, then you might want to skip this column.
You know, the kind who couldn't enjoy the Texas Rangers getting to first place in June because they knew a nosedive in July was sure to follow.
Well, I'm starting to get that same feeling about this Dallas Mavericks team that I had about the 2010 Rangers.
The Mavericks are 43-16 entering tonight's road game at Philadelphia.
But they've had good records before. The Dirk Nowitzki-era Mavericks always win 50 games and are usually on the short list of contenders.
Despite the sparkling record, a 2-7 stretch without Nowitzki means they won't win the top seed in the Western Conference. The Spurs should have that sown up despite Tony Parker's injury.
But being the second or third seed won't hurt that much. These Mavericks have won in Boston. They've won in Miami. They've won in San Antonio. When Nowitzki's not wearing an overpriced suit Dallas has been better than anyone against the good teams.
They're not scared of San Antonio or the Lakers. Nowitzki said it nicely at the All-Star break and Jason Terry said it brashly last week. The Mavericks plan to take down everyone. They think they can beat anybody as long as No. 41 is playing.
The Mavs have defense in the middle with Tyson Chandler. With the previous center combinations the team had to point out all the intangible things that Erick Dampier and backups could do. With Chandler there is tangible evidence as well as team leadership.
They've got a great distributor at point guard in Jason Kidd. And they've got shooters on the wings with Jason Terry and Peja Stojokavic.
And Dallas is a really, really deep team despite the loss of Caron Butler. Depth usually makes its mark in the regular season and isn't as big of a concern in a playoff series with plenty of built-in rest time, but for the Mavericks it will give Rick Carlisle a lot of options depending on the opponent.
And the Mavericks have Nowitzki. He's shooting better than ever and Dallas is 41-9 with him in the lineup. He makes Chandler better. He makes Terry better. He makes Kidd better. And with him in the lineup, it seems like Carlisle is a lot smarter.
Although that sounds like an MVP pitch, Nowitzki won't win another one of those. But he might get a second chance in the NBA Finals, and I get the feeling he'd be more focused than ever if he gets that chance.
Nowitzki has chased headlines in free agency last summer. He could have joined the Knicks or tried to piggy-back a superstar somewhere else.
But Nowitzki stayed loyal and trusted the Dallas management, which didn't make a splash but quietly turned Dampier's contract into Chandler, the best official center in the West (behind power forwards Tim Duncan and Pau Gasol).
The Mavericks also made a smart move to pick up Stojokavic when Toronto released him. Adding the former King assassin and getting Rodrigue Beaubois back on the court was the equivalent of two deadline moves.
Realistically, the odds tell you that one of the other 15 NBA playoff teams will take home the title this year. That's always the case.
But I really like the way this Mavericks team is playing together and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see this team make its second trip to the NBA Finals.
And hopefuly they'd get a chance at some revenge on the Miami Heat once they get there."
