By David Elfin
NFL Writer

The 50 Most Colorful Personalities in NFL History.
By Adam Lazarus (Featured Columnist)
No. 44: Charles Haley.
"Rather than try and explain Charles Haley's personality from afar, just listen to three of his former teammates, All-Pro Ken North and Hall of Famers Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin tell it.
Haley may have been "crazy" according to his teammates, but that didn't keep him from winning a record five Super Bowls during an eight-year stretch."
No. 21: Don Meredith.
"Although Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman would soon become better known, Don Meredith set the standard for Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks/icons.
As a player he was beloved by fans and media, but when he joined Monday Night Football in 1970, his folksy Texas attitude became as much a staple of the show as Howard Cosell or the game itself.
Like many of the players-turned-broadcaster/actors on this list, Meredith didn't all of a sudden develop that colorful personality after retiring from his playing career in 1968."
No. 12: Deion Sanders.
"As a two-sport professional athlete, Deion was naturally going to be a darling of the media and the fans. But in his chase for national superstardom, Sanders had another thing going for him: supreme confidence.
Sanders believed in himself and his talents and that he was the best, something that was appealing to many NFL fans....and despicable to others.
The high-stepping taunt was his colorful personality translated onto the field."
No. 9: Michael Irvin.
"There were several big personalities on that Cowboys dynasty of the 1990s: Jimmy Johnson, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, Charles Haley, etc.
But none were quite as colorful as "The Playmaker."
Irvin's off-the-field antics were part of his legacy, but so was the zeal and passion that were as much his trademark as anything."
No. 8: Bill Parcells.
"Something of a modern day Vince Lombardi, Parcells earns a higher spot on this than the former Packer coach for one reason: his back-and-forth with the media.
At each one of his stops, New York (twice), New England, and Dallas, he routinely verbally sparred with reporters. And it was often hilarious, often uncomfortable to watch."
No. 3: Mike Ditka.
"As a Hall of Fame tight end for the Bears, Eagles, and Cowboys, Ditka's personality didn't really come out until he took over the spot once held by his mentor, George Halas.
And with all that time in front of the camera, explaining the game to reporters, his personality immediately shone through, as it continues to on ESPN today.
Although he wasn't as prone to comedy as his contemporary, Bill Parcells, thanks to his terribly short temper, he was slightly more colorful."
No. 1: Terrell Owens.
"Love him or hate him, T.O. has the most colorful personality.
Over his career, he's shown all the qualities: arrogance/confidence, drama (all of 2005 in Philadelphia), excitement, unpredictably, crying (that Tony Romo press conference), and humor."

Cowboys set to formalize Jason Garrett.
"All signs point to the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings removing the "interim" tags from their respective head coaches, Jason Garrett and Leslie Frazier.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Garrett's promotion is virtually a fait accompli, though Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will first interview Dallas receivers coach Ray Sherman and possibly another candidate to satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule.Jason Garrett

The Cowboys have gone 4-3 under Garrett after starting 1-7 with deposed Wade Phillips."

No Interviews Yet, But Jerry Wants To Move Quickly.
Posted by rphillips at 1/2/2011 3:01 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com
"Speaking in the tunnel at Lincoln Financial Field before the game, Jerry Jones denied reports that Jason Garrett has been named full-time head coach and that wide receivers coach Ray Sherman had already interviewed this week to satisfy the Rooney Rule for minority candidate consideration. "Nothing has changed from from Monday regarding our coaching status at all," Jones said. "I haven't had any interviews and I planned not to do that until after the ball game."
Jones did say he wants to move "real quickly" on naming a permanent head coach, possibly even this coming week, but he had never planned to start the interviewing process until after the season finale.
Jones said he does want to interview Sherman, and said Monday he also would consider speaking to candidates outside the organization.
Asked if promoting Garrett was a mere formality, Jones said, "I don't think that I would want to talk about that at all because that wouldn't be fair to anything we might do in the interviewing process.
"But certainly I've had a great chance and a great opportunity here to watch Jason as head coach and watch what he's doing. All that's been a plus. As I said earlier, I won't require an interview with him."

Hurd Gets Ed Block Courage Award.
Posted by rphillips at 12/31/2010 2:47 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com
"Sam Hurd's 2010 season is over -- he has been placed on injured reserve with a head injury -- but the fifth-year receiver received a prestigious honor Friday: the Cowboys' 2010 Ed Block Courage Award.
In a vote among his teammates, Hurd was selected for his hard work and perseverance in overcoming surgery on his right thumb in the offseason. Hurd, voted the special teams captain for 2010, is currently second on the team with a single-season career-high 21 special teams tackles.
Hurd was also called on to fill in at wide receiver more this year due to teammates' injuries and has recorded 14 receptions for 120 yards.
Recent Ed Block recipients:
2009 - Kyle Kosier, G
2008 - Keith Davis, S
2007 - Jay Ratliff, NT
2006 - Flozell Adams, T
2005 - Dan Campbell, TE
Special Courage Award:
2009 - Joe DeCamillis, Special Teams Coordinator."

Sherman Says He Has Not Interviewed Yet.
Posted by jellis at 1/2/2011 2:03 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com
"Contrary to multiple reports, Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman said Sunday afternoon he has not yet been approached for the team's head coaching job.
Asked directly if he had been interviewed yet, Sherman shook his head and said "Nuh-uh."
A source with the team said interim coach Jason Garrett remained the leading candidate for the position, but no interviews had occured yet to satisfy the NFL's "Rooney Rule," which requires a team to interview at least one minority candidate before making a head coaching hire.
On Monday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he would interview Sherman, an in-house minority candidate, as well as outside candidates.
"Not that that is the rule, but I will do both," Jones said. "It's just too logical for me if we've got qualified people on our staff, to interview them. And it's too illogical to say that you'll leave it at that. There're qualified people out here that you would want to interview."

Winning Finish in Philly.
Kurt Daniels
DallasCowboysStar.com
For all the talk about the Dallas Cowboys going out strong, or playing for tape or, in the case of the Eagles, staying sharp for the playoffs, this finale in Philadelphia felt more like a preseason game than a battle between heated rivals.
Despite the home team primarily playing backups, resting banged-up starters like quarterback Michael Vick, wide receiver DeSean Jackson and running back LeSean McCoy, the Cowboys struggled early, but were finally able to find success, coming from behind late in the game to finish their 2010 season with a 14-13 victory.
The offense, with third-string quarterback Stephen McGee under center, couldn't seem to find its rhythm throughout most of the game, producing only 272 total yards, including just 113 through the air. Still, that was better than Philly's 244 total yards, the Cowboys' defense, led by DeMarcus Ware and his three sacks, playing strong throughout most of the game, although again, they were facing a large number of Philly reserves.
McGee, in his first NFL start, completed 40% of his passes, but didn't turn the ball over and threw for one touchdown. Miles Austin produced 62 receiving yards to lead the team and in the process top the 1,000-yard mark, while tight end Jason Witten continued his impressive season with four catches for 46 yards, all of which came on the team's final game-winning drive.
On the ground, Felix Jones averaged 7.4 yards per carry on his way to 81 yards total with McGee scrambling nine times for a total of 55 yards. Marion Barber, who began the season as the Cowboys' lead back, didn't even get in the game until the third quarter and finished with just three yards on three tries.
Defensively, Ware's three sacks marked his fourth multi-sack effort of the year and matched his season-high, having also recorded three in the team's win over Houston back in Week 3. He finished the season with 15.5 sacks, the second-highest total of his career, behind only the 20.0 he had in 2008. He also picked up a bouncing fumble that he then ran into the end zone for the Cowboys' first score of the game.
For all the excitement at the end, the first quarter was relatively quiet for both teams as the Cowboys punted on each of their first three possessions with Philadelphia kicking away on their initial two. Dallas made its way out to the Eagles' 40-yard line on it first drive, but then was pinned in deep for the rest of the quarter, never getting past their own 24.
Philadelphia finally capitalized on its field position advantage after McGee was called for intentional grounding, leaving Mat McBriar to punt from his own 10. After a 13-yard return, the Eagles were set up at the Dallas 39. Seven plays later, a scrambling Kevin Kolb threw to receiver Chad Hall in the back of the end zone for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
But Dallas was able to get on the board soon thereafter thanks to their defense. After McBriar pinned the Eagles down at their 8-yard line, Kolb dropped back to pass on third and 15, only to have Anthony Spencer strip the ball from behind with the prize bouncing right into the arms of Ware, who darted untouched to paydirt, tying the score, 7-7.
The offense continued to struggle as McGee ended the first half with just 29 passing yards, and that included a 31-yard bubble screen that Austin produced on the very first possession. The ground game wasn't much better with 21 of their 69 rushing yards through the first two quarters coming off McGee scrambles.
Fortunately, though, the Cowboys' defense kept the pressure on. With just 34 seconds left in the half, Philadelphia, on a three-and-out, punted the ball away. But, return man Bryan McCann muffed the catch, the rookie continuing his fumble struggles, and the Eagles recovered the ball at the Dallas 34.
Ware, however, made sure the score would remain tied going into the break. First he sacked Kolb for an 8-yard loss, then on second down pressured the quarterback into an incomplete pass. On the final play of the second quarter, Kolb threw a "Hail Mary" into the end zone, safety Gerald Sensabaugh coming down with the prayer for his team-leading fifth interception of the season.
The third quarter saw more of the same. The Eagles' were on the move during their opening possession of the half, getting down to the Dallas 17. But, Kolb threw into traffic with cornerback Terence Newman stepping in front of Riley Cooper for his fourth pick of the year.
McGee then took his team to the Philadelphia 35, a deep pass to Austin on the right sideline providing a 31-yard gain. But choosing to go for it on fourth and four instead of trying a lengthy field goal, the pair couldn't connect again, the Eagles taking over on downs.
After trading punts, Philly started at their own 40, then immediately got a big 36-yard run from Jerome Harrison, the team eventually working its way to the Dallas 26. There, kicker David Akers converted a 43-yard field goal, giving the home team the lead, 10-7, with just seconds gone in the fourth quarter.
Dallas tried to answer. Starting at their own 22, the Cowboys reached the Eagles' 34 primarily on the ground. Jones had two runs for a combined 14 yards with McGee scrambling for 18 more. But David Buehler, already on the hot seat after last week's point-after miss, went wide right from 52 yards out, no good, the score still 10-7.
And then, much like it has all season, the big play showed up and bit the defense again. On their first play after taking over possession, the Eagles saw Hall get behind the secondary, Kolb finding him for a 48-yard completion down to the Dallas 10. While the Cowboys kept Philly out of the end zone, Akers came out for another try, splitting the uprights from 22 yards to up the score to 13-10.
But with 2:54 left in the game, the Dallas offense finally found a little groove, in no small part because McGee finally found Witten, who prior to this possession hadn't caught a ball all day.
Following an Eagles' punt, the Cowboys started at their own 46 with McGee immediately hitting Witten for two quick passes for a combined 9 yards. After Marion Barber couldn't pick up the needed 1 more, fullback Chris Gronkowski got pass the sticks on fourth down to keep the drive alive.
That was then followed by McGee going back to Witten, who broke tackles and rumbled his way 33 yards to the Philadelphia 11-yard line. After an incomplete attempt to receiver Manny Johnson on a slant, McGee went to Mr. Reliable, hitting Witten on the right side of the end zone for the score, the Cowboys taking a 14-13 lead with under a minute remaining.
From there, the defense did its job. Ware took down Kolb for a 9-yard loss, then on fourth and 19, Newman leaped in front of Kolb's desperation attempt for his second interception, sealing the win.
Dallas finished the season at 6-10, their worst record since 2004. But, they showed signs of life under interim head coach Jason Garrett, managing to post a 5-3 record over the second half of the schedule .
They now enter the offseason with plenty of decisions to make, first and foremost being the search for a new head coach, which according to owner Jerry Jones begins immediately."

"The Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles have faced off in one wild-card game, two divisional playoffs and one NFC Championship. They've met 103 times total and they've had some epic battles in the last half century. Yet despite all of that history, this regular-season finale could have the look and the feel of a meaningless preseason battle.
Neither team has anything to gain standings-wise this week. The 5-10 Cowboys will miss the playoffs regardless of the outcome and the 10-5 Eagles can't move up or down from the No. 3 seed. And, both teams could be playing a lot of backups for various reasons. Nonetheless, jobs are on the line this Sunday, so the game will be more than meaningful for both parties as they play in their final game of the 2010 regular season."
