Bushland football coach Flowers takes Perryton job.

"David Flowers is going home.
Flowers said late Monday the Perryton Independent School District board approved him as the new head football coach at Perryton High School.
The 56-year-old Flowers is a native of Perryton and leaves Bushland after five successful years with the Falcons. Flowers started the Bushland program in 2006 and compiled a 45-10 record, including a 15-1 mark in 2009 when the Falcons reached the state final.
“This wasn’t an easy decision,” Flowers said. “But this time it just felt right to me to return home. The community of Perryton is so gung-ho about all their athletic teams, just like Bushland.”
The Perryton job opened when Neal Hugg stepped aside recently with a 22-29 record after five seasons. Perryton missed the playoffs in the four-team District 1-3A in 2010, finishing 2-7 overall with wins against 1A Stratford and 2A Bushland.
Flowers said he expects to begin his new job next week."

Callisburg Hires..
Callisburg — "This morning Kevin Hayes was introduced as the new athletic director and head football coach for the Callisburg Independent School District.

Hayes hails from Athens, where he spent the last year and a half as the offensive coordinator for the Hornets.

But his hayday as a head football coach and AD were spent at Teague for 15 years.

After the short stint at Athens, Hayes said he applied for the open position with Callisburg because it was time to head up his own athletic program.

“After a year and a half you miss it,” Hayes said. “You miss the excitement. For me I had too much down time, too much time on my hands. I wanted to get back into running my own program and I was fortunate to get this (job).”

While at Teague, he went 87-71 and reached the playoffs 8 times. His wife, Lori, is an educator and spent her time in Athens as a sixth grade math teacher. The couple have two sons, one of which is the current running backs coach at Athens, the other plays running back at Texas Lutheran, Hayes said.

The position came open at the end of 2010 when coach/AD Jerry Bomar submitted his retirement letter to the school board. It ended a seven-year marriage between Bomar and the Wildcats’ athletic program.

“The past is the past,” Callisburg Superintendent Dr. Charles Holloway said. “We’ve had some up-and-coming programs. That’s another thing, we’re not just talking about football, we’re talking about all the athletic programs in Callisburg. We’re not saying they all have to be winners. We would like to win, but we want them to be successful, progressive and growing programs.”

Teague and Callisburg are similar in nature, Hayes said, which is one of the many reasons he applied for the position.

“Callisburg is the same type size, school that I spent 15 years at — same type of demographic,” he said. “It’s just a school in North Texas that’s very appealing to me. I like working with those type of kids, I like the area and it just seemed like a good match.”

Hayes, who brings a multiple wing offense with him to the Wildcats’ football program, said he is ready for his new endeavor.

“I want to bring excitement and enthusiasm to the program,” he said. “Change is never easy, but I think change is good. For me, it’s going to be starting fresh. It’s new and invigorating.”

Dr. Holloway expessed that he and the school district are ready for the new-look Wildcats.

“We’re excited to have him here,” Holloway said. “The search has been long. Our key emphasis — me, the board and the administration — was to find a fit. Being around and familiar with the community of Teague, it’s a lot like Callisburg, not only size wise, but community wise. Watching him build the program at Teague, what he started out with and what he ended up with, and his statistics while he was the offensive coordinator at Athens speak for themselves.”

From 2004-2008, Hayes led Teague to five consecutive playoff berths with one district championship. His best season was in 2004 when the team was a regional finalist and finished 9-3.

In 2007, the Lions finished 9-2.

Teague also reached the playoffs in 1998, 1999 and 2002 when the Lions were 3A. Hayes also helped win a district title in that span.

What perhaps stood out most for Holloway and CISD was Hayes’ superlatives as a person.

“That’s the thing that stood out about him — he’s honest, (has) integrity, loves kids and does the right thing,” Dr. Holloway said, “and that’s what we were looking for.”

It was previously reported that a board meeting was to be held this morning to officially hire Hayes as the new AD and head football coach. However, that meeting will actually take place sometime in the beginning of February, but a date has not been set.

Hayes will take over a Wildcats’ football program that finished 2-8 in 2010, a year removed from reaching the state semifinals."
