Former Alvord coach Curtis Enis is returning to take over as the district's athletic director.


"The Alvord School Board approved hiring Enis Monday night. No start date was determined.

Enis, who is the girls basketball coach at Saint Jo, said school officials from Alvord and his present district were to discuss a separation agreement Wednesday.

"I will not be on the Alvord campus until basketball season is over," Enis said.

Saint Jo was to play Slidell Tuesday in the Class A Division II Region III quarterfinal in Gainesville.

Saint Jo Superintendent Larry Smith added: "We'll do whatever is best for both districts and come to an agreement in a timely fashion."

Enis was previously at Alvord from 1989 through 2008. He spent one year at Mansfield before coaching at Saint Jo the past two years.

"Two reasons led me back," he said. "It's where my family is at and where I live. My wife teaches there and son goes to school there. It's also an opportunity to be an athletic director and run an athletic program from top to bottom."

Enis previously held the athletic director job at Alvord after Danny Neighbors went to Paradise. He stayed in the role for five years before Mike Chaney took over.

"He wanted to be the athletic director, and I gave up the AD job and stayed as the girls basketball coach and coordinator," Enis said.

In returning to Alvord, Enis plans on returning to the sidelines as head football coach. He spent one season in the role during his previous stint.

"I miss football; it's my favorite sport to coach," said Enis, who played football at Decatur. "I wanted to get back into football."

He said he will serve as the team's offensive coordinator and will be picking a defensive coordinator.

Alvord coach Don Deweber has spent the past two years coaching the Bulldogs to a 13-9 record and a trip to the area round of the playoffs this past season. Deweber had not been told of changes as of Tuesday morning and did not wish to comment.

Enis said he did not have staffing decisions yet.

"I'll be trying to put together the best staff I can," he said. "It's something the principal, superintendent and I will be working to do."

Along with football, Enis plans to coach boys cross country and track.

"I will be heavily involved in all sports," he said.

In his two years at Saint Jo, Smith said Enis has been an asset to the school.

"He's done a great job, and the kids are succeeding in all the areas he's coaching," Smith said. "He's had a very positive influence on kids, and his work ethic that he's passed along is commendable."

Alvord Superintendent Bill Branum did not immediately return calls for comment."
