Rangers | Brandon Webb optimistic.
"Texas Rangers SP Brandon Webb (shoulder) is optimistic that he will be fully healthy for the start of the 2011 regular season, according to ESPNDallas.com's Richard Durrett. "I hope to jump right in," Webb said. "There are no limitations at all for me. I'm carrying on like any pre-Spring Training workouts. I want to get to work with (pitching coach Mike Maddux) and throw the live bullpens and live BPs." Webb has yet to throw off a mound and is throwing as part of his offseason routine."

Webb, Rhodes join Webb, Rhodes pitching staff.
Posted By Jeff Wilson.

ARLINGTON--"The right shoulder of Brandon Webb is right where it should be, judging by the normal timetable for pitchers who have had the type of operation he underwent in August 2009.

That timetable doesn't have an end date set in stone. It could be spring training. It could be Opening Day. It could be sometime in April or early May.

But the 2006 National League Cy Young winner and the award's runner-up the next two years said he plans to be a full-go when pitchers and catchers have their first spring workout Feb. 17, and he is hopeful that he will be in the Texas Rangers' rotation on Opening Day.

Webb and left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes were introduced Monday as the newest members of the reigning American League champions. Each signed a one-year deal for 2011, and Rhodes' deal includes a vesting club option for 2012.

Webb, who hasn't pitched since Opening Day in 2009, said he won't be gun shy on his first day in Surprise, Ariz., next month.

"Coming into spring training, healthy or not, it takes people a few weeks to get their feet wet," Webb said during a news conference at Rangers Ballpark.

"I feel like I should be right there with the other guys. A few days with the guys, I should be rolling."

The 31-year-old has been sacked the past two seasons and returned for only four innings during the fall Instructional League. He topped out at 85 mph with his fastball and said he isn't far away from his normal velocity.

Dr. Keith Meister, the Rangers' team physician, performed the 2009 operation and has continued to evaluate the right-hander.

"He's seen my shoulder closer than anyone has seen it," said Webb, whose deal guarantees him $3 million and includes up to $5 million more in incentives. "Having him here was definitely a little bit of a comfort for me."

Webb learned last year that setting timetables can be foolish, but he said the goal of being full-strength by Opening Day isn't unreasonable.

"I sure hope I'm ready for spring training and Opening Day," said Webb, who resumed throwing two weeks ago. "I feel I should be right there. I expect to be able to jump right in."

Rhodes, born and raised in Waco, said the allure of playing close to his hometown led him to the Rangers. He is coming off his first All-Star appearance, a feat achieved at age 40 and in his 19th big-league season.

The Rangers will be his eighth team in career that began in 1991 with Baltimore. Rhodes, who will make $3.9 million in 2011, will join Darren Oliver as left-handers available in the late innings.

"This gives us the opportunity where neither one of them has to take on the bulk of the workload," manager Ron Washington said. "It gives us some versatility."

Catcher Max Ramirez and lefty Clay Rapada were designated for assignment to clear roster space for Webb and Rhodes."

Rangers Won't Bring Back Vladimir Guerrero.
by JP Starkey.

"Guerrero was excellent in the first half of the season, posting a .918 OPS in the first half of the season while belting 20 home runs. Unfortunately, Guerrero cooled off considerably in the second half, hitting nine home runs while posting an OPS of .748. Guerrero was awful in the playoffs as well, hitting .220/.242/.271. Vlad had just three extra base hits, all doubles, in 59 at bats in the playoffs and only drew two walks in 15 games."

It's Official: Adrian Beltre Signs With Texas Rangers.

"Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels...assist newly-acquired third baseman Adrian Beltre and the Rangers have agreed to a five-year contract with a vesting option for a sixth season."

Texas Rangers Sign Adrian Beltre.
The Texas Rangers finalized a contract with free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre on Wednesday, signing him to a five-year, 80 million dollar contract with a vesting option for a sixth year. The option is worth 16 million dollars.

The Rangers, of course, failed to sign Cliff Lee, but consider Beltre a nice consolation prize.

Beltre was second in the American League in 2010 in WAR – wins above replacement – with a 7.1 WAR. Beltre trailed only American League MVP Josh Hamilton in WAR. Beltre hit .321/.365/.553 in 2010 with the Red Sox, his only year in Boston.

Beltre’s arrival in Texas means Michael Young will shift off of third base and to a super-sub and designated hitter role. Young will likely serve as Texas’ primary DH and appearing at various positions in the infield to give regulars a day off.

Beltre’s signing also likely spells the end of Vladimir Guerrero’s time in Texas, as Young is now slated to serve as the primary designated hitter.

Update: Report: Adrian Beltre Is In Texas For Physical
Richard Durrett cites sources who say free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre was in town Tuesday night for a Wednesday physical that could lead to him signing with the Rangers later in the day.

Numerous reports Tuesday labeled Beltre's deal as five years with a sixth that would be triggered if Beltre reaches various goals. The sixth year could bring the deal to a total of $96 million.

The 31-year-old would be the Rangers’ regular third baseman, bumping Michael Young to a DH/utility role. Young said Monday that he would be willing to move off of third base to accommodate Beltre.

Update: T.R. Sullivan: 'Get Ready For Adrian Beltre'
T.R. Sullivan, whose Rangers sources have downplayed the likelihood of a deal between the club and Adrian Beltre, now reports that the two sides are close.

The Rangers’ big free-agent purchase of the offseason is close to being completed. Get ready for Adrian Beltre to take over for Michael Young as the Rangers’ third baseman.

An official announcement will likely be delayed until after Beltre undergoes a physical and may not come until later this week. But the Rangers are willing to make a significant commitment to the 31-year-old third baseman, who has won two Gold Gloves and is coming off one of his best offensive seasons."

The Rangers' Run Took Its Toll On Their Payroll.
by Brett Perryman.

"Jeff Euston of Baseball Prospectus has final payroll numbers for 2010, and the team that catches his eye is the Rangers. Euston details how Texas started the season with a $58 million payroll and ended it at $74 million, thanks to trades, bonuses and buyouts.

The final number landed the Rangers at 22nd in payroll, about $15 million below the league median and of course much lower than the average payroll."

Rangers Sign Webb To Incentive Laden Contract.
The Rangers and former Cy Young winner Brandon Webb have agreed to terms on a contract.

Update: Brandon Webb Set To Earn At Least Three Million With Rangers.
Brandon Webb’s contract with the Texas Rangers will have a base salary of three million dollars according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. Olney’s colleague at ESPN Jerry Crasnick is reporting that incentives can bring Webb’s salary between eight and ten million dollars.

Webb, a former Cy Young winner with the Arizona Diamondbacks, hasn’t pitched since the 2009 season when he threw only four innings. Webb did not appear in the major leagues during the 2010 season. Shoulder injuries have derailed Webb’s career, which had been highly successful up until the injuries. Webb boasts a career 3.27 ERA and 1.24 WHIP – and he’s a notorious groundball machine thanks to his sinkerball.

Webb decided to sign with the Rangers instead of the Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. The Nats, Cubs and Reds had been courting Webb up through last week. The Reds emerged as yet another infamous “mystery team” but failed to sign Webb.

Texas Rangers Sign Brandon Webb.
The Texas Rangers and former Cy Young winner Brandon Webb have come to terms on a contract agreement according to AOL Fanhouse's Ed Price. Webb will undergo a physical before the deal becomes official.

Webb has thrown only four innings for the Diamondbacks since 2008. Webb has been slowed by shoulder injuries the past two seasons. Webb won the Cy Young award for the Diamondbacks in 2006, when he went 16-8 for Arizona with a 3.10 ERA and 1.13 WHIP while striking out 178 in 235 innings of work.

Webb enjoyed a highly successful career prior to being derailed by the shoulder injuries. The sinkerballer has a career 3.27 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. When healthy, Webb has been a legitimate top-of-the-rotation pitcher. The only question with Webb, and a big question of course, is his health.

Webb had been deciding between the Rangers, Nationals and Cubs earlier last week before another "mystery team" joined the fray. The Cincinnati Reds were the mystery team this time around, but Webb ultimately decided to choose the Rangers."
