Busy Rule 5 draft.
"The Rangers filled out their 40-man roster by trading cash for right-hander Mason Tobin, who the Chicago Cubs selected in the major-league portion of the Rule 5 draft.
The 23-year-old didn't pitch in 2010 after having Tommy John surgery on his elbow in the spring of 2009. He will compete for the roster in spring training as a reliever.
He must remain on the Rangers' 25-man roster for the duration of the 2011 regular season, or be offered back to the LA Angels, from whose roster he was plucked by the Cubs, for a fee of $25,000.
The Rangers added two players in the Triple A phase -- catcher Jessie Mier and lefty Starling De La Rosa, neither of whom has compiled overwhelming stats during their minor-league careers."

Rangers set Minors coaching staffs for 2011.
By T.R. Sullivan/MLB.com
ARLINGTON--"Former Rangers third baseman Steve Buechele, who has led teams to the playoffs in his first two years as a Minor League manager, is returning for a second season as manager of Double-A Frisco.
He will be assisted by pitching coach Jeff Andrews and former Major League outfielder Brant Brown, who is entering his third season as a coach at Frisco. Andrews, entering his 26th season as a Minor League instructor, is in his second year at Frisco after being the Pirates' pitching coach in 2008.
The Rangers have also hired former Major League infielder Casey Candele to be a special instructor in the Minor Leagues. A nine-year Major League veteran, Candele will focus on infielders, bunting and baserunning.
The Rangers announced all their Minor League managers and coaches on Friday. They had already announced their Triple-A Round Rock staff, which consists of manager Bobby Jones, pitching coach Terry Clark, hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh and infield coach Spike Owen.
The Rangers have a new manager at Class A Myrtle Beach, the former Bakersfield team that will be run by manager Jason Wood. He was the hitting coach at Bakersfield the past two seasons and a former infielder who played 153 games in the Major Leagues with the Athletics, Tigers and Marlins.
His staff will include pitching coach Brad Holman, who is being promoted from Class A Hickory, and hitting coach Julio Garcia, who is joining the Rangers' organization after three seasons of managing in the Reds' organization.
Bill Richardson returns for a second season as the manager at Class A Hickory and will be joined by new pitching coach Storm Davis. Jason Hart returns as the hitting coach. Former Rangers Minor Leaguer Corey Ragsdale will also be on the staff. Davis is a former Major League pitcher who was 113-96 with a 4.02 ERA in 442 games, including 239 starts, from 1982-94 with the Orioles, Athletics, Padres, Royals and Tigers. He pitched in three World Series.
Former big league infielder Tim Hulett returns for his fifth season at Class A Spokane, where he has been the Northwest League's Manager of the Year in two of his past three seasons. Brian Dayette and Josue Perez will split the hitting-coach duties and David Chavarria, who spent the past three seasons in Bakersfield, will be the pitching coach.
Hector Ortiz will manage the Arizona Rookie League team, with Ryan O'Malley and Oscar Marin serving as pitching coaches and Oscar Bernard serving as the hitting coach. Additionally, the club has hired Mike LaCassa, who will serve as player development administration -- Arizona operations. LaCassa spent the past year as a baseball operations and player development intern based at the club's complex in Surprise, Ariz.
Kenny Holmberg returns as the Dominican Academy manager with a staff that includes pitching coaches Jose Jaimes and Pablo Blanco, hitting coach Guillermo Mercedes, catching coach Ryley Westman, infield coaches Jesus Ovalle and Alexis Infante and outfield coach Osvaldo Oliva."

2011 Contract Issues: Texas Rangers.
By Tim Dierkes
The Rangers face three contractual options after the season:
"•Reliever Darren Oliver has a $3.25MM club option with a $500K buyout. The salary becomes guaranteed with 59 appearances; Oliver is on track with ten so far.
•Rich Harden and Vladimir Guerrero have mutual options, at $11MM and $9MM respectively. These don't have much purpose, aside from pushing $2MM worth of buyouts to the offseason. Vlad's $1MM buyout disappears if he declines the option.
The Rangers have a pair of free agents in Frank Francisco and Matt Treanor. If they both leave, it'll free up around $4MM. They'll also clear $6.75MM in buyouts and obligations paid to Kevin Millwood, Frank Catalanotto, and Vicente Padilla. The Rangers will free up $12MM paid to Harden and Guerrero, less the $2MM in buyouts. All told, they have roughly $20MM coming off the books if everyone but Oliver leaves.
Increases to players under contract total $5.225MM, with Ian Kinsler, Scott Feldman, and Colby Lewis getting small bumps. First-time arbitration eligibles include Nelson Cruz, David Murphy, Darren O'Day, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Josh Hamilton, Dustin Nippert, and Ryan Garko are in the second-time group, while C.J. Wilson, Brandon McCarthy, and Chris Ray are eligible for a third time. There will be some decent raises in that mix, especially Cruz, Hamilton, and Wilson. Still, it appears the Rangers will have millions to spend even before raising payroll."

Rangers ready to move on without Cliff Lee.

Losing Lee leaves Texas Rangers behind.

Love wins out with Lee going back to Philly.
http://www.star-telegram.com/2010/12/14/2705123/rangers-looking-at-options-after.html
Rangers looking at options after Lee bolts.
"Phillies' offer
5 years,$120 million
Deal is $4 million more per season than Roy Halladay's three-year, $60 million contract.
Rangers' offer
6 years,
$138 million
Some money would have been deferred. Seventh-year vesting option worth $23 million.
Priceless or pricey?
The five other pitchers who signed deals for at least $100 million and how they fared:
LHP CC Sabathia, NYY
7 years, $161 million
Two years into his deal, Sabathia has earned every dollar. He has won 40 games in two years and won five postseason games, helping New York win the World Series last year.
LHP Johan Santana, NYM
6 years, $137.5 million
The Mets signed Santana the 2007 season. He has won 40 games over three seasons but has struggled with injuries while making only 54 starts the last two years.
LHP Barry Zito, San Fran.
7 years, $126 million
Zito hasn't had a winning record in any of his four seasons (40-57 total) with the Giants and was left off the World Series roster.
LHP Mike Hampton, Colo.
8 years, $121 million
He was a big-splash signing after the 2000 season,
but was only five games over .500 from 2001-05. He was traded to Atlanta two years into the deal.
RHP Kevin Brown, LAD
7 years, $105 million
The Dodgers took a risk on a 34-year-old Brown for the 1999 season, and it paid off. Brown reached double figures in wins four of his five years with the Dodgers."

Rangers' rotation today.
"The Rangers will look to upgrade their rotation now that Cliff Lee is out of the picture. Here's what the rotation might look like right now.
LHP C.J. Wilson
RHP Colby Lewis
RHP Tommy Hunter
LHP Derek Holland
RHP Scott Feldman."

Jon Daniels speaks about Michael Young trade talks.
"The trade talks involving Michael Young that came up late Tuesday never materialized a day later. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said that he contacted Young's agent, Dan Lozano, to relay the nature of the talks and to downplay the way rumors involving a trade to Colorado took off.
"That’s the byproduct of having these meetings," Daniels said. "Ninety-nine percent of the players get asked about through different conversations. I’m not surprised when a big name gets run with."
Asked if he expects the nature of the conversations to change, Daniels said he doesn’t.
"But I wouldn’t speak in absolutes," he said. "We’re going to look at every way improve the club. Does that include trading Michael Young? No, that’s not likely."
