The National Basketball Association has officially announced the starters for the Eastern and Western Conference All-Star teams.
Posted by Ben Golliver.

"The NBA officially announced the Eastern Conference and Western Conference starters for the 2011 NBA All-Star Game on Thursday.

For the Eastern Conference: Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, Miami Heat forward LeBron James, New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire, and Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.

For the Western Conference: New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant and Houston Rockets Yao Ming.

Of the 10 names selected, there were no real surprises, as all had established themselves fairly strongly during the balloting process. The biggest snubs? For the East: probably Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, although Rose is difficult to argue. For the West: Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki should be there, as should every center that actually played more than five games this season.

Bryant was the leading vote-getter for the Western Conference; Howard was the leading vote-getter for the Eastern Conference.

Here's a look at the jerseys this year's All-Stars will be wearing.

The 2011 All-Star game will be played in Los Angeles, California, at the Staples Center on February 20."

Inside the Bulls with Sun-Times sports reporter John Jackson.
Rose named All-Star starter.

"Derrick Rose finished second among Eastern Conference guards in the fan balloting for next month's NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles and will start alongside Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat.

Before the announcement was made Thursday night on TNT, Rose addressed the possibility of becoming the Bulls' first All-Star starter since Michael Jordan in 1998.

"For me to be the first one - if it does happen - would be great," Rose said, "but I didn't think about Michael Jordan or anything like that."

Rose has downplayed the possibility of starting for weeks, saying it would be an honor to be on the team whether he was a starter or a reserve. Last season, Rose became the first Bull since Jordan to play in the All-Star Game when he was a reserve."

The rest of the East starters are Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic at center and LeBron James of the Heat and Amare Stoudemire of the New York Knicks at forward.

The West starters are Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets at guard, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Carmelo Anthony at forward and Yao Ming at center. Yao is injured and will be replaced by commissioner David Stern when the reserves are announced next week."

Stoudemire’s All-Star Nod Adds Luster to Knicks.
By JONATHAN ABRAMS

The honor bestowed upon Amar’e Stoudemire was largely ceremonial, but his appointment as a starter for the Eastern Conference All-Star team serves as a status symbol in his goal of leading the Knicks to the N.B.A.’s forefront.

Stoudemire, the league’s second-leading scorer (26.1 points a game entering Thursday night’s game), will be the Knicks’ first All-Star starter selection since Patrick Ewing in 1997. Ewing did not play because of injury.

Asked if he could envision the team without Stoudemire, Knicks Coach Mike D’Antoni said: “Oh, I can imagine it. We just did it. We still have battle scars.”

Stoudemire beat out Boston’s Kevin Garnett in the final results, 1,674,995 votes to Garnett’s 1,407,601.

Miami’s LeBron James paced all Eastern Conference players with 2,053,011. Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose are the remaining starters.

Los Angeles will host the All-Star Game on Feb. 20.

The Western Conference starters are Kobe Bryant (2,380,016 votes), Chris Paul, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony. Yao Ming was elected as a starter but is sidelined with a foot injury.

Commissioner David Stern named David Lee of the Knicks to last year’s All-Star team as a substitute when Allen Iverson pulled out because of personal reasons. Before that, the last Knicks players to make the All-Star team were Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston in 2001.

Meanwhile, the Knicks ranked first in the estimated values of N.B.A. teams, according to Forbes, worth $655 million, an increase of $69 million from last season. The Knicks surpassed the Lakers, whose value was estimated at $643 million, followed by Chicago ($511 million) and Boston ($452 million). The Heat showed the biggest percentage rise, jumping 17 percent to $425 million. After losing James over the summer, Cleveland dropped a league-high 26 percent to $355 million.

FANS HAVE A SAY The N.B.A. announced that the participants in the Skills Challenge over All-Star weekend would be selected by the fans. Four players will be selected from a group of eight — Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Tony Parker, John Wall, Tyreke Evans, Derek Fisher, Baron Davis and Stephen Curry. They will face New Orleans’s Chris Paul. Votes can be cast at NBA.com/chooseyoursquad."

2011 NBA All-Star Starters Revealed, What About the Reserves?.
By Chris Tomasson.
"Denver coach George Karl likes to say each All-Star squad should have 15 players, rather than 12.

It's a great idea for the West this season, with there about to be some serious snubs. As for the East, 10 seems a better number this season in a conference that after the top teams has as much depth as the local park's kiddie pool.

Perhaps the East should concede two spots to the West. Throw in that Houston's Yao Ming, named the West starting center, will miss the Feb. 20 Game in Los Angeles, and that would give the West 15 players with All-Star recognition.

The starters were announced Thursday night, and there wasn't anything to complain about other than how ridiculous it was that fans (hello, China) continued to vote for Yao in bunches even after it was announced Dec. 17 he was out for the season with a foot injury. Even before then, he was averaging 10.2 points in a meager five games.

The East starters will be Orlando's Dwight Howard at center, Miami's LeBron James and New York's Amar'e Stoudemire at forward and Miami's Dwyane Wade and Chicago's Derrick Rose at guard. Other than Yao, West starters named were Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant and Denver's Carmelo Anthony at forward and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant and New Orleans' Chris Paul at guard.

Now, on to the reserves. After the coaches cast their ballots, here's who should be announced next Thursday as well as which players might be ticked off:

Eastern Conference
Center:

Al Horford, Atlanta. Horford might not want the Hawks one day to trade for a true center. Although undersized for the position at 6-foot-10, he's looking at another free trip to the All-Star Game due to the East having few quality centers behind Howard. (Chicago's Joakim Noah would be a candidate for this spot, as well, but he's still sidelined following thumb surgery.) Horford was an All-Star last season when he averaged a modest 14.2 points, and he's up to 16.3 this season.

Forwards:

Kevin Garnett, Boston. Life's certainties are death, taxes, Dick Clark being propped up on New Year's Eve and Garnett being booked in late February. It will be the 14th consecutive All-Star plane ticket issued for "The Big Ticket.''

Paul Pierce, Boston. This guy is showing no signs of slowing down at 33. He's averaging 19.1 points and shooting 51.4 percent, the first time he's been over 47.2 in his 13-year career.

Chris Bosh, Miami. James calls the Miami the "Heatles.'' Although nobody is sure who on the team is Ringo Starr, Bosh definitely is George Harrison. He's quiet but quite effective.

Guards:

Ray Allen, Boston. Allen, who twice has been named an injury replacement and made the team in 2003-04 even after missing 25 early-season games, has a way of slipping into All-Star Games just like he gets open for jumpers. Allen, vying for his 10th appearance, is averaging 17.3 points and shooting 50.5 percent. Like Pierce, Allen is on pace to shoot 50 percent for the first time in his career, and he's a 15-year man.

Rajon Rondo, Boston. They're trying to paint Los Angeles green. Rondo would make four Celtics in the All-Star Game, which would tie in an NBA record. But Boston does have the East's best mark at 34-10. The four can try to have a more pleasant time at the Staples Center next month than they did in their Game 7 NBA Finals loss last June.

Joe Johnson, Atlanta. About a month ago, Johnson seemingly had little chance at a fifth straight All-Star appearance. All he's done in January is average 25.2 points on 50.0 percent shooting to raise his seasonal averages to 19.6 on 43.5 marksmanship. And the Hawks have gone 8-3 in January.

Snubs (if anybody in East really can be called one):

Raymond Felton, New York guard. Felton can blame Johnson for taking his spot with his recent play. Not long ago, Felton looked a good bet to make his first All-Star team. But the Knicks have dropped six of their past seven games. Since their 16-9 start, New York (23-21) is just 7-12. Felton's numbers of 17.5 points and 8.9 assists are solid, but not good enough for a point guard to make an All-Star team off a team barely above .500.

Carlos Boozer, Chicago. It doesn't help Boozer that he's missed 18 games due to injury. Then again, Lakers big man Pau Gasol missed 17 early last season and was an All-Star and there was Allen's mystifying selection in 2003-04, when he didn't play in his first game until Dec. 23. Perhaps Boozer, a guy who's often injured, can end up being an injury replacement if the East needs one.

Western Conference Center:
Pau Gasol, Lakers. This should be an easy pick. West coaches will slide Gasol over, even though he's now starting at power forward. But Gasol did start the first 31 games at center when Andrew Bynum was out and then later working his way back from a knee injury.

Forwards:
Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas. The Mavericks are 27-8 when he plays this season and 2-7 when he doesn't. Enough said.
Blake Griffin, Clippers. Yes, it's always said players off losing teams are at a serious disadvantage when it comes to being named an All-Star. But it's hard to ignore averages of 22.6 points and 12.8 rebounds, and the rookie's highlights being so prevalent these days they should be tracked by the Nielsen ratings. And the Clippers (17-28) are 12-7 since a 5-21 start.

Kevin Love, Minnesota. Now, this is a really bad team. But even though the Timberwolves are 10-35, how can you ignore that Love is averaging 15.7 boards (and 21.6 points), on pace to be the best rebounding season since Dennis Rodman pulled down 16.1 a game in 1996-97 while contributing no offense?

Guards:
Deron Williams, Utah. It was hard to make that first All-Star Game, which Williams finally did last season in his fifth campaign. Pen him in for the next decade.

Manu Ginobili, San Antonio. The Spurs are 39-7, and Ginobili is having one of his best seasons at 33. Ginobili, averaging 18.7 points, has played in every game after having missed at least five in each of his first eight seasons.

Tony Parker, San Antonio. Breaking up from Eva Longoria hasn't made Parker look desperate on the court. The calm Parker is averaging 17.5 points and 6.9 assists, which aren't incredible numbers. But he's shooting 52.3 percent, pretty impressive for a point guard and much higher than Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook's 43.6. That, the Spurs' record and that Westbrook is leading the NBA in turnovers, gives Parker the nod for the final guard spot in the closest vote since Florida 2000.

Commissioner's Pick:
Tim Duncan, San Antonio forward. He doesn't like to be called a center. So hopefully David Stern won't make that mistake when tabbing him as an injury replacement for Yao. As detailed by FanHouse last month, if Duncan isn't named a reserve by the coaches, it would be ideal for Stern to name one of his favorite players to perhaps his final All-Star Game. Duncan's stats (13.6 points, 9.5 rebounds) won't blow anybody away but his minutes are down in order to save him for the playoffs.

Snubs:
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City guard. It's really tough to leave a guy off averaging 22.4 points and 8.4 assists for a first-place team. But he did tell FanHouse last week "it's not a big deal'' for him to make the All-Star Game and, "I don't really care.'' So we'll assume he won't be too torn up spending All-Star Weekend at a Caribbean island of his choosing.

Steve Nash, Phoenix guard. Here's another difficult omission. But Nash did sit home in 2009, and that game was in Phoenix. It sounds hypocritical to say Phoenix's 20-24 record will keep Nash out when one considers Griffin and Love have been included off worse teams. But Nash can't quite match the eye-popping stats of Griffin and Love. His numbers (17.3 points, 11.0 assists) are similar to what they were in seasons in which the Suns were winning.

Monta Ellis, Golden State guard. Sorry, Monta. There's just no room once again in the West. Ellis averaged 25.5 points last season and couldn't make the All-Star team. Now, he's at 25.8 and likely again to stay home. The Warriors have the NBA's longest drought, not having had an All-Star since 1997. They're used to getting no respect. Purvis Short averaged 28.0 points for Golden State in 1984-85 and couldn't get an All-Star sniff.

LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland forward. Aldridge told TNT last week he didn't believe he would be selected to the All-Star Game. So why fight it? Aldridge, on pace for career highs with his averages of 21.1 points and 8.8 rebounds, will get into an All-Star Game one of these days. Well, maybe. It's always tough to make it in West, where 15 spots sure would come in handy this season."

"HOW ARE THE NBA ALL-STAR GAME RESERVES CHOSEN?
The "popularity contest" of the fan ballot determine the starting fives. Fans have about two months between November and January to pick their favorite players.
Later is the NBA coaches job to complete both rosters. Each coach has to pick seven players (2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center and 2 more regardless of the position) from his own Conference, not being able to choose his own players. When some player is injured (starter or not) is the NBA office who directly names the replacement player.

Every season there are some players making great stats in weak teams (non-playoffs and/or under .500 teams) who have a very small chance to make the All-Star teams, or at least that's the feeling I have. Nobody doubts that players like Blake Griffin or Kevin Love making such a huge stats would be a lock in the All-Star team if they were playing in Boston or LA. So, I was thinking, which kind of players have been selected in the last 25 years? And the best I could do was to look at the history of the players chosen as a reserves in the last 25 seasons (1985-2010)

Total Players chosen: 372
Players from teams under .500 victories: 65 (17% of total players)
Players from non-playoffs teams: 55 (15% of total players)

20% of the players (73 out of 372) chosen after the fan ballot was released played on teams under .500 victories or out of the Playoffs. That's more players than I thought before looking at the numbers. And, as we can see in the images, in the last 10 years the trend is to select more of these players. In fact, the numbers are bigger for the injury replacements (40%, 15 out of 37 players), it seems the NBA prefer to reward players having great season, while the coaches prefer to reward good teams:

Total injury replacements: 37
Players from teams under .500 victories: 13 (35% of total players)
Players from non-playoffs teams: 12 (32% of total players)

Zydrunas Ilgauskas in 2003 is the player with the worst record of the last 25 years to be chosen as a NBA All-Star Game reserve. Cleveland Cavaliers have 9 wins and 38 losses (.191) at January 31, 2003."

2011 NBA All-Star Game: Tim Duncan Replacing Yao Ming In West Starting Lineup.
By Allen Kim (Knicks Featured Columnist)

"The Western Conference All-Star lineup was in need of a starting center to replace the injured Yao Ming with a number of potential candidates up for consideration.

Playing in front of his home crowd, rookie sensation Blake Griffin was passed up on. As was double-double machine Kevin Love and hometown favorite, Pau Gasol.

In a rather predictable move, coach Greg Poppovich selected his very own big man, Tim Duncan, to make the start. This will be Duncan's 12th consecutive start for the Western Conference All-Star roster.

"I didn't expect to be there this year and I definitely didn't expect to start, so definitely a great honor," Duncan said. "I don't know, year in and year out I continue to be on that starting squad. I really don't know why I'm there but I'll take it."

While there will be some controversy over the selection, Duncan gives the West the best chance to win."

2011 NBA All-Star Weekend: Dunk Contest, All-Star Game Highlights Weekend.
By JP Starkey-Associate Editor.

"Dirk Nowitzki will be the Dallas Mavericks' lone representative in the 2011 NBA All-Star game on Sunday.

The midway point of the NBA season is here with the 2011 All-Star weekend being upon us this weekend. Most of the 40-16 Mavericks will be resting this weekend, as Dirk Nowitzki is the club's lone representative. Still, there are a few events this weekend worth watching if you're a Mavericks fan.

The festivities kick off on Friday from the Staples Center in Los Angeles - but they are pretty low-key for the most part. As with almost every sport, there will be celebrity game to kick off the All-Star weekend. As if a celebrity game wasn't gimmicky enough, you can expect all sorts of stunts and tricks to come out since it's being broadcast on ESPN. Coverage begins at 7 PM EST.

Saturday is a bit more interesting with a few interesting competitions - the skills competition, three-point shooting competition and of course, the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. I suspect most will only be interested in the slam dunk contest, which will feature Blake Griffin as well as DeMar DeRozan, JaVale McGee and Serge Ibaka. All of these competitions can be found on TNT beginning at 8:30 on Saturday night.

Finally, All-Star weekend is capped off with the actual All-Star game on Sunday night. As aforementioned, Dirk Nowitzki will be Dallas' only representative, and he won't be starting. The Western Conference's starting lineup consists of Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul - tough to really argue with those names. The All-Star game should tipoff Sunday at 8 PM EST."

History
2010: Actor Rapaport shines
Michael Rapaport has made a career out of portraying other people in movies and on TV. On Friday night, he pulled off a fair facsimile of a basketball player during the 2010 All-Star Celebrity Game.

Rapaport managed only four points for the West team, but his stifling defense on football star Terrell Owens -- the game's MVP the past two years -- enabled him to steal the MVP from T.O. and get the West a 41-37 win over the East. Owens scored 10 points, leading his team, but had only two after the half.

2009: T.O. does it again
In his day job, Terrell Owens plays wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. When he moonlights as a celebrity basketball player, he's pretty good at receiving, too. Things like alley oops. And MVP trophies.

Thanks to a game-high 17 points (but only one assist -- he's a receiver, not a passer, you know), Owens nabbed the Most Valuable Player trophy by leading the East Sunrisers to a 60-57 win over West Sunsetters at the McDonald's All-Star Celebrity Game at Jam Session on Friday.

2008: Owens, Master P lead team to victory
An NFL star and a hip-hop standout were the driving force behind the win at the 2008 McDonald's NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.

Terrell Owens, star wideout for the Dallas Cowboys, and Master P, a hip-hop impresario, combined for 35 points as New Orleans managed a 51-50 win over the Hornets. Owens scored 18 points -- including a slam dunk -- and received MVP honors while Master P chipped in with 17 points, including a pair of go-ahead free throws with 19 seconds left."
