Fresh blood in the West with Oklahoma City Russell Westbrook and Blake Griffin (who became the first rookie in the NBA All-Star Game since Yao Ming in 2003). Manu Ginobili is back 6 years later and Tim Duncan probably faces his last All-Star Game.

East All-Stars 143, West All-Stars 148
By BRIAN MAHONEY
And just like June, he walked off his home floor with the MVP trophy in his hands.
Shining brightest again among the stars,
"I feel like we have a sense of responsibility and we are voted in for what we do during the season, which is play hard,"
Returning to the game he dominates after a one-year absence, Bryant added 14 rebounds in a spectacular performance in front of the usual celebrity-filled crowd that turns out to see his Lakers at Staples Center.
"It was like playing in a playground. It was like a pickup game almost," Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant said. "Just to watch it, I see it on TV all the time, I play against him all the time. But to be on his team and see the things that he was doing out there is just amazing."
Durant chipped in 34 points, scoring five straight after the East cut a 17-point deficit after three quarters to two points with 2:34 to play. The NBA scoring leader added the clinching free throws after the East got back within three in the final seconds.
LeBron James powered the East rally, finishing with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to join Michael Jordan as the only players with a triple-double in the All-Star game. Amare Stoudemire also scored 29, but Miami's Dwyane Wade, the MVP of the East's win last year, had to leave with an ankle injury after scoring 14.
Wade said he rolled the ankle he originally hurt in a loss at Boston last week. He was hoping James would pull it out without him.
"I wish the East would've won, then my teammate with the triple-double would've stole (the MVP)," Wade said. "But (
Plenty of Hollywood giants were sitting courtside, but
He told fans to "enjoy the show" before the tip, and as always he delivered a good one.
Always more about focus than fun,
"You could tell he started out from the start, he wanted to get the MVP," Stoudemire said. "He was not passing the ball, at all. But that's
And when the East made it close in the third quarter,
"He was unbelievable tonight," James said. "You definitely saw his motor was going tonight."
Carmelo Anthony scored eight points in his possible goodbye to the West team. The weekend was dominated by talk of a potential trade to New York or New Jersey, and the Denver Nuggets forward appeared alternately entertained and annoyed by the constant questions.
"At times, it can be tough, but it's fun at the same time," he said while walking on the magenta carpet before the game. "During this weekend I'm still having fun."
While hearing some of the usual "MVP! MVP! chants he's usually serenaded with at Staples Center,
Gasol scored 17 points, helping the West hold on against an East team featuring a combined seven players from Boston and Miami, considered two of the biggest threats to end the Lakers' reign.
The exhibition game had a bit of a finals feel with the presence of a record-tying four players from the rival Celtics.
Paul Pierce - who grew up in nearby Inglewood - and Kevin Garnett received the heaviest boos during the starting lineups. Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo were also here from the group that lost Game 7 on this floor last June and would love another chance to come take the title back.
East coach Doc Rivers sent his four players out together midway through the first quarter to loud boos that usually provide the soundtrack of June in Los Angeles. They quickly turned to cheers when Allen threw up an airball on his first shot attempt.
Bryant denied gaining extra motivation from seeing the two rivals, both of whom already won at Staples Center this season. But he was clearly into the game from the start, driving for a couple of strong dunks or knocking down jumpers when defenders gave him room.
The crowd of entertainers included Beyonce and Jay-Z, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jack Nicholson, Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Justin Bieber - who was called Justin "Berber" by the public address announcer while mentioning the teen star's MVP performance in the celebrity game on Friday.
Perhaps trying too hard to impress the stars surrounding them, there were errant passes and shaky shooting in the early minutes. The West got it right in the final minute of the first quarter, with rookie star Blake Griffin of the Clippers catching an alley-oop pass from Deron Williams for one of his powerful dunks - though not quite the degree of difficulty as his slam while leaping over the hood of a car Saturday to win the dunk contest.
The game was a welcome diversion from the Anthony talk and the troubling labor situation that threatens the league. Next year's game is scheduled for Orlando, but nobody can be sure it will be played. The owners and players' association met Friday to discuss a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the one that expires June 30. Though it was described as a positive meeting, there was also no progress made, and the sides have a significant gap to close in order to prevent a work stoppage.
And it was a welcome break for
They'll be all right if
Chris Bosh scored 14 points, Allen had 12, and Derrick Rose and Joe Johnson finished with 11 apiece for the East.
Following a pregame performance by rocker Lenny Kravitz a tandem talc toss by James and the rest of the East starters,
Russell Westbrook, who played at UCLA, scored 12 points and Chris Paul added 10 for the West.
NOTES: Not all Celtics get booed in Los Angeles. Hall of Famer Bill Russell, who this week became the first person from the NBA to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, received a standing ovation when his honor was announced during the second quarter. ... The record of 14 straight All-Star selections is shared by Jerry West, Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone. ... Dolph Schayes was honored for scoring the first points in the first All-Star game 60 years ago."

East Starting Lineup Does LeBron's Chalk Toss Before NBA All-Star Game. (VIDEO)
"Dwight Howard has mocked LeBron James' chalk toss routine plenty of times. But before the 2011 NBA All-Star game, Howard and LeBron led the rest of the East starters in a team chalk toss. LeBron put up amazing numbers, recording the second triple-double in All-Star game history with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. But Kobe Bryant took home MVP honors as the West won 148-143. Scroll down to watch the chalk toss."

VIDEO: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James Dominate 2011 NBA All-Star Game Highlights
by Tom Ziller.
"Kobe Bryant took home the 2011 NBA All-Star Game MVP award with 37 points and 14 rebounds. But LeBron James almost stole the trophy from Kobe with the second triple-double in All-Star Game history, pumping out 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. (Michael Jordan had the first triple-double, by the way, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 1997. Glen Rice won the All-Star Game MVP that year.)
The two divisive stars led the way for their respective teams, but other studs like Kevin Durant (34 points) and Amar'e Stoudemire (29) contributed mightily to the 2011 All-Star Game highlight reel."

"Rihanna was great," tweeted one Cleveland fan watched the NBA All Star Game performance. Also in the crowd were celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Beyonce and Jay Z, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Snoop Dogg, and 'Idol' Judge Steven Tyler.
•VIDEO: Rihanna, Drake, and Kanye Rock the 2011 NBA All Star Game
While Rihanna's performance was amazing, with added star power from Kanye and Drake, it was Kobe Bryant who was the man of the night, lead his team (West All Stars) to a victory over the East All Stars, and being named MVP of the event.
Rihanna looked amazing as she performed. Her red hair looking longer than usual, and a sparkling top. Fans in attendance at LA's Staples Center were loving the performance, as well the stars in the audience.
What do you think about Rihanna spending her 23rd birthday working? What was more entertaining than the 2011 NBA All Star Game?"

Blake Griffin honors late friend after win.
Comments By Ramona Shelburne.
ESPNLosAngeles.com.
LOS ANGELES -- "Blake Griffin plans to give the trophy he won in Saturday night's Sprite Slam Dunk challenge to the family of his high school teammate Wilson Holloway, who died Wednesday after a long battle with Hodgkins lymphoma.
"I wanted to do this, not just for myself but for him," Griffin said. "I think I'm actually going to give this [trophy] to his family. That's why I really wanted to win."
Griffin learned of Holloway's death Wednesday night after the Clippers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves. He sobbed in the locker room after getting that phone call and has since dedicated his performance this weekend to his childhood friend.
Griffin said he planned to fly straight to Oklahoma City after Sunday's All-Star Game and to attend Holloway's funeral on Monday.
"It's kind of a good thing that I've been so busy," he said. "It doesn't leave you time to think about it."
Almost three years ago, Holloway received a diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma, but he didn't let it keep him from playing college football at Tulsa and, those who knew him say, it didn't affect his positive outlook on life. They chose to remember that smile on Thursday, the day after he died in Oklahoma City at age 22.
"He definitely faced some adversity, but yet he always lived life the way that he chose, which was to be upbeat, be positive," said University of Central Oklahoma football coach Tracy Holland, who was Holloway's prep coach at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond.
"He was a fierce and loyal friend."
After an honor-filled high school career, Holloway, a 6-foot-6, 275-pound offensive tackle from Edmond, signed with Tulsa in 2007. He redshirted that fall and was running during Tulsa's offseason workouts the following February when he noticed he was struggling and short of breath.
Herb Hand, then Tulsa's co-offensive coordinator, suggested that Holloway seek medical attention, and on March 13, Holloway learned he had a softball-sized tumor in his chest.
Holloway continued working out with the Golden Hurricane, even as he endured chemotherapy treatments. By August, he was declared cancer-free and played in six games before the cancer returned that October. Another round of chemotherapy caused Holloway to lose his hair, and his fellow linemen and quarterback David Johnson shaved their heads in solidarity.
Holloway remained a member of Tulsa's football team throughout his battle with cancer. He was listed in the 2009 and 2010 media guides, although he didn't play in either season. The university held a moment of silence for Holloway on Wednesday night before a home basketball game against East Carolina.
"In his four years at the University of Tulsa, Wilson's smile was contagious to those who ever met him," Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. "He fought the disease with a tireless and enthusiastic spirit. We'll never forget Wilson's own words -- 'I don't take things for granted any more. There are days I wish I could go out and do the drills everyone hates to do.' Wilson Holloway has touched all of our hearts with his passion for living."
Griffin had been a big supporter of Holloway's battle. When Holloway was nominated for the 2010 Rare Disease Champion award a year ago, Griffin tweeted to his 50,000-plus followers: "My boy @Wilson Holloway is up 4 The Rare Disease Champion Award and he needs ur vote."
"He was just one of those guys that was so positive," Griffin said. "I never heard him complain once."

Blake Griffin, Tulsa mourn teammate.
Blake Griffin On Losing His Friend.
"Colleen Dominguez talks to Blake Griffin after the death of his high school teammate.
Blake GriffinBlake Griffin Press Conference.
Blake Griffin Press Conference.
Following his first All-Star weekend, Blake Griffin reflects on the game, Kobe Bryant, and the last time he was this tired.
Blake Griffin was coming off a solid win, heading into his first All-Star Weekend, but all he could do was sob.
After Wednesday night's Clippers win over the Timberwolves in Minneapolis, Griffin had his head in his hands in the locker room after receiving a phone call that a friend from home had died.
That friend was Wilson Holloway, his high school teammate and Tulsa football player who died from complications of Hodgkin's lymphoma on Wednesday.
Holloway, who was profiled by ESPN.com in 2008, had been battling cancer since 2008.
In an interview with ESPN's Colleen Dominguez, Griffin said he planned to see Holloway on Tuesday when the Clippers play in Oklahoma City, and he had set aside a ticket for him.
Clippers spokesperson Rob Raichlen told ESPNLosAngeles.com Griffin's plans for All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles will not change. He is scheduled to participate in the Rookie Challenge Friday, the Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday and the All-Star Game on Sunday.
"It was hard for me to believe because in my mind it was like 'OK, so when he gets better it's going to be all right,'" Griffin said of his friend. "You never think that's going to happen to you or somebody you know or somebody that's that close to you that's your age."
From the size of Holloway's smile, it was sometimes difficult to ascertain that he was fighting for his life.

"He was just one of those guys that was so positive," Griffin said. "I never heard him complain once."
In January 2009, Holloway won the Courage Award from the Football Writers Association of America after beating Hodgkin's lymphoma twice in the 10 months before that.
"I'm so optimistic and so upbeat, I never really let it get me down. My whole mentality on it is if I let it get to me, then it's winning," Holloway said after receiving the award.
"I just kind of went about my life and did everything I wanted to do, and didn't let it slow me down."
Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham, who coached Holloway at Tulsa, called him "one of the special ones who will always stay with me. What an example he was to his teammates. Here was this guy facing cancer and he whipped it twice. His spirit never dropped."
Holloway and Griffin both attended Oklahoma Christian High School, where Holloway played football and basketball. After the Saints won their fourth straight basketball title in March 2007, Griffin, who had 22 points and seven rebounds in the championship game, credited his teammates. One of those was Holloway, who added 14 points and nine rebounds.
"A lot of teams overlooked our other players," Griffin said, according to the Tulsa World. "Those teams think I'm our only guy. But they find out that we have five guys who can score instead of just one."
Holloway's funeral is scheduled for Monday afternoon at Memorial Road Church of Christ in Oklahoma City.
"He was so upbeat and loved life so much," Holland said. "All of his friends will have all kinds of funny stories and great stories to tell about him."

Dwyane Wade exits but says ankle ok.
Comments By Michael Wallace.
ESPN.com.
LOS ANGELES --"After leaving in the third quarter of Sunday's All-Star Game with a sprained right ankle, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade said he would have pushed through the discomfort had it been a regular-season game, and plans to be in the lineup Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings.
"It was an All-Star Game," Wade said of his decision not to return. "If it were a regular game, I would have tied my shoes up a little tighter and gone back out there. But I didn't want to do too much."
Instead, Wade sat out and watched the East's rally fall short as the West held on for a 148-143 victory at Staples Center behind strong efforts from Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant.
Bryant was named the game's MVP after finishing with 37 points and 14 rebounds. Durant added 34 points to help the West hold on despite a triple-double from LeBron James, who had 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the East.
The Heat have much bigger concerns than the outcome of Sunday's game. Wade's health, which has been an issue in recent weeks because of various nagging injuries, was the priority. But the Heat didn't escape without a scare.
Wade aggravated the ankle with about five minutes left in the third quarter when he landed awkwardly on West guard Deron Williams' foot. Wade immediately reached toward his ankle and began to limp. East coach Doc Rivers called a timeout with 5:04 left in the quarter to replace Wade, who did not return and finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes.
Wade said he will continue to get treatment on the ankle over the next two days while downplaying the significance of the injury. He also said he did not require treatment during All-Star Weekend leading up to Sunday's game.
"I have pretty strong ankles, so this is nothing new for me," Wade said. "I just tweaked it a little bit and went right to the bench. I've responded well off turned ankles before. The last time I did it, I came back the next game against Indiana, and I think I did all right."
Wade was referring to last Tuesday's game against the Indiana Pacers, when he scored 41 points in a Heat victory two days after he initially hurt his right ankle in a loss to Boston. Wade initially sprained the ankle when he landed awkwardly after shooting a jumper over Celtics forward Paul Pierce.
The Heat's schedule resumes with a practice Monday evening in advance of Tuesday's home game against the Kings. Miami then plays a back-to-back set, with games Thursday in Chicago and Friday at home against Washington. Wade, the most valuable player of last year's All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium, has played through a series of injuries this season, including a bruised knee and sprains of both wrists.
But after seeing how his Heat teammates performed Sunday, Wade has a healthy outlook on the second half of the season. Bosh made 7 of 10 shots for 14 points and added five rebounds in 21 minutes. Miami's three players combined for 57 points, 21 rebounds and 14 assists on Sunday for the East.
"Everybody had a good time, so that's all that matters," Bosh said. "When it comes down to it, you want to win. You don't play this game just to get smacked around, lose, smile and say, 'Good game.' "
Wade said the performance James put on, especially in the fourth quarter, was on par with the way James has played all season for the Heat. In past years, Wade, James and Bosh would go their separate ways after teaming up in All-Star games.
But that's no longer the case, Wade said.
"Man, I'm glad he's going back with me," Wade said of James. "He's a freight train when he gets going. He dominates games. So like I said, I'm glad he's getting back on that plane and going back to Miami with me."
