Major was Saban's OC at ALABAMA - is that good enough?
From the "Bleacher Report"Greg Davis Out at Texas, Could Major Applewhite Get Shafted Twice at UT?
As expected in Longhorn Nation, Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis is rumored to be released from his duties sometime soon. The dismal offense behind high school sensation and sophomore Garrett Gilbert started the axe in motion a few weeks ago.
There has been quite a bit of debate on Greg Davis being the fall guy in this regime considering he has helped lead the Longhorn offense to two, almost three National Championship Games. I'm one of those in favor of this move as I think his offenses were vanilla and never fully utilized the talent he had around him.
As much as I loved watching Vince Young play, it wasn't because of the offensive schemes he was put in. Greg Davis just said, "Here's the ball Vince, go score a touchdown." Not much was changed with Colt McCoy. He was fortunate to have such talent that could carry the team on their shoulders.
Now the questions are, "Will anyone else be let go?" and "Who will be the new offensive coordinator?"
The Longhorns running backs coach is a former UT quarterback Major Applewhite. Since his college career he has gone on to a successful coaching career most notably as the offensive coordinator at Alabama in Nick Saban's first year there. He helped turn the Crimson Tide back into winners.
Major Applewhite has already had his experience being shafted while at UT. It was rumored that Mack Brown was never really a "Major Applewhite guy" because Mack recruited Chris Simms there, not Major. Fans loved Major because he was gritty and put up decent numbers. Fans looked at Chris Simms like he was a spoiled brat. Despite what fans liked, Major sat the bench most of his career.
Now Major's back at UT and an offensive coordinator position has just opened—a position he's held in the past with some success, but most think that he'll get passed up again to add some fresh blood to the system. At least this time Mack Brown did bring Major Applewhite to the team.
Will Major be able to resist getting axed in this revamping process? Will he get passed up for the promotion? Or will he finally get that last bit of approval from Mack Brown that he didn't get while playing for him as a college quarterback?

Texas has never hired a H.S. Coach in a long long time. The last was early in the D. Royal era in the 1960's.They will be looking at former Head Coach at Lake Travis who is now in his 2nd yr at Tulsa OC Chad Morris. Do a search to many good things to say all in this space. Texas A & M where he went to school had him down in his last yr at LT to help teach some play calling.
I mean no disrespect to a guy I never heard of in Chad Morris, but Applewhite has gone through the wars as a player and a colligiate coach. Why id Alabama hire him as OC? That should count for something.
Applewhite knows what the players are thinking and has a great repore with them. The players respond to him and that IS BIG in a Football Game & in Practice.
It is all "X's" and "O's" in football. Believe me! What goes on between the ears of the players is more important that play calling. If you have the Horses ready to all pull together that TRUMPS a goodlooking, fast-Talking "Pretty-Boy" Coach. Look at what Bum Phillips did st Houston. He was a COACH PERIOD. So Is Applewhite.
