BIG COUNTRY FEATURE: Berry still going strong in Cisco.
By Evan Ren.
CISCO—"When Cisco girls basketball coach Ron Berry began his career, “All in the Family” was the top-rated television show, Richard Nixon was president and a gallon of gasoline cost roughly 36 cents.
That’s a long time — long enough for most people to grow tired of what they’re doing, and either retire or move on to something else.
Not Berry.
At the age of 60, he has just entered his 39th season of coaching basketball, with stops on his résumé at Wellman, Morton, Poolville, Irving, Canyon Randall, Weatherford, Frisco, Edgewood, Hamilton, Stephenville, and beginning in 2008, Cisco.
Along the way he has earned no fewer than eight trips to the regional quarterfinals, four appearances in the regional semifinals and two appearances in a regional final.
Recently, in a win over Stamford, he earned his 700th career win against just 299 losses.
“It’s almost like an out-of-body experience,” said Berry, who has guided Cisco to two straight playoff appearances. “I started so young, at the age of 20, and I’ve stayed so active. I almost feel like I’m still the same age.
“It’s (odd) saying your 60 when you don’t feel that way at heart. I still feel like I’m at an early stage in my career because I love the game so much.”
Approached by Cisco ISD Superintendent Hal Porter while he was coaching at Stephenville, Berry made what may seem like odd move by leaving a successful Class 4A program to take over a struggling Class 2A team.
But Porter, according to Berry, can be most convincing.
“Mr. Porter came and visited me,” Berry said. “He told me that his girls program was struggling, and he needed someone to get the program back where it needs to be.
“Him driving all the way over to Stephenville impressed me. Plus, I had been in some smaller schools before going to Stephenville, and I missed the 2A and 3A levels.
“At this level, you get to know the kids more personally and you get to interact with their lives a little more. Hopefully, we’ll get a team to Austin and finish our career here.”
And it is a trip to Austin that, at least, partially fuels Berry’s desire to stay in the game. Through 38 previous seasons, he has yet to coach a team to the Texas high school equivalent to the Final Four.
Berry earned two trips to a regional final in his first stint at Stephenville from 1981-88, he’s coached in the Texas Girls Association All-Star game and in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Game.
A victory in a regional final, however, still eludes him.
“It’s a very good incentive,” Berry said of his desire for a trip to the capitol. “I told Mr. Porter that’s one of four things that still drive me.
“It’s a goal that I set many years ago, and I thought it would be easy. But it’s a lot harder than I ever imagined, because you’ve got to be good, you’ve got to be lucky and you’ve got to have great kids.”
And it is the kids that matter most to Berry, who attempts to impart a combination of wisdom and caring to each player he works with.
His recipe for success: set a good example and let them know you care.
“Coach Berry is a very personable, caring person,” assistant coach Skylah Hoffman said. “He’s always working to make the girls better, and his former players come back to see him, which tells me a lot about him.
“It seems like they’ve made a friendship, and they know he cares about them.”
One of those players — Trisha Tuck — who played for Berry at Stephenville from 2004-2007 — is now studying to follow in her former coach’s footsteps at the University of Texas.
“He always cared a lot about his players,” Tuck said. “My freshman year he gave me a chance and moved me up to varsity. After that, he taught me every aspect of the game.
“I’ve just switched my major to be a coach and a teacher, and when I talk to him, I always tell him it would be really cool if I got to work under him some day.”
As for just how long Berry plans to remain courtside, there is — at present — no end in sight.
Listing health, effectiveness and his personal level of enthusiasm as the indicators of when he might hang it up, Berry’s current plans are to continue pushing for a trip to Austin.
“When it’s no longer exciting and you don’t get the adrenaline rush, it becomes a job,” said Berry, who credits the support of his wife, Rulene, as one the keys to his success. “When this becomes a job, it’s time to get out.”
