Jim Ned takes both games of doubleheader from Merkel

TUSCOLA—"It was viewed as a first-class matchup between two of the best Class 2A girls programs in the state. And for nearly two quarters, Jim Ned and Merkel played that way Tuesday at Thorton Arena.

That is, at least, until Jim Ned hit the accelerator — turning a six-point halftime lead into a 70-41 win.

Meagan O’Dell scored 17 points and Dyllan Brown added 10 more to lead the fifth-ranked Lady Indians (20-8, 8-0, District 5-2A), who took control of the game with a 20-9 third quarter.

Merkel — which fell to Jim Ned 61-54 on Dec. 14 — dropped to 22-4 overall and 7-2 in district.

The Lady Badgers finished with 23 turnovers on the evening, most after the break.

Chera Chaney led Merkel with 13 points.

“We handled (the pressure) great, early in the game,” Merkel coach Clay Barnett said.

“We just came out in the second half and missed some key layup opportunities, some free throws, and it just snowballed from there.”

Trailing 8-2 early on, Jim Ned gradually erased the deficit behind a pair of first-quarter 3s from O’Dell and a pair of buckets from Lindsey Tutt to end the period with a 14-13 edge.

Merkel’s final lead came at the 3:55 mark of the second quarter when a Chaney jumper put the Lady Badgers up 19-18.

A 7-0 Jim Ned spurt followed, however, after which the Lady Indians never trailed.

“It was our hustle, creating turnovers,” Jim Ned coach Jim Avery said. “Jim Ned basketball is about defense and rebounds. … Our offense is our defense.”

Jim Ned retained the initiative in the third quarter, opening with another 7-0 run for a double-digit advantage.

Plagued by a rash of second-half turnovers, the Lady Badgers then saw the game get away from them with three Jim Ned Layups over the final two minutes of the period.

By the time the 6:30 mark of the fourth was reached, Merkel trailed 55-35 with little hope of mounting a late threat.

“Give credit to Jim Ned,” Barnett said. “They don’t back off of you (defensively) … But regardless of that, we’ve just got to do a better job of playing.”

Merkel finished with a 14-of-46 effort from the floor. Jim Ned, by comparison, was 25-of-57, including five 3-pointers from O’Dell.

“We just beat a very good team,” Avery said. “Merkel is No. 7 in the state for a reason. … We may see them down the road again and I’ll bet we do.”
