Win at the wire: Eastland takes down Wall in OT in boys basketball.
By Evan Ren.
MERKEL—"For three full quarters, Eastland's bid to return to a third straight Region I tournament was in jeopardy during Wednesday's Class 2A quarterfinal matchup with No. 3 Wall.
But courtesy of a big-time performance from a big-time talent, the 10th-ranked Mavericks (30-4) rallied for a 53-52 win at Merkel, getting a game-high 23 points from center Forrest Robinson.
Robinson, who was held in check throughout most of the first half, scored 18 of his points after the break, including 12 in the final six minutes of regulation.
Clint Galyean knocked down what proved to be the game-winner for the Mavs — a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in overtime. Eastlandadvances to the Region I semifinals in Midland, where it will face Muleshoe, a 58-48 winner over Stanton, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Wall, which was led by Justin Walling with 17 points and Garrett Nichols with 14, finished29-4.
The Hawks led by six after the first quarter, by eight at the half and by as much as 10 early in the third before Eastland began to seize the momentum.
"In the second half we knew we just had to come out and play ball," said Robinson, who nailed two 3-pointers in the final three minutes of regulation to help force a 46-46 tie. "We didn't hit our shots in the first half, but that's going to happen sometimes.
"We've got to deal with adversity. So we played defense, stepped up and knocked down our shots."
Some of which were indefensible.
With Robinson consistently drawing double teams in the paint, the 6-foot-10 North Texas-bound standout did much of his damage from the perimeter, canning five of his seven second-half field goals via jump shots.
"Four of the shots he hit in the second half were from deep in the corner or high up top we had a 6-foot-6 guy with a hand in his face and he still hit them," Wall coach Doug Gordon said. "When a kid hits shots like that, there's really no defense for it.
"That's why he's going to North Texas."
Robinson also had 16 rebounds.
Early on, however, Wall appeared to have the Eastland big man solved on both ends of the floor.
Committing only three first-half turnovers, the Hawks held Robinson to just two first-half field goals while gradually building a 26-18 lead.Wall was 11-of-21 from the floor before the break, with five of those field goals coming via layups.
"We were down by eight at halftime but we felt pretty good because we hadn't played very well," Eastland coach Doug Galyean said. "We hadn't moved the ball well and we thought we could shoot a little better.
"We weren't discouraged — we just had to play better."

Eastland's Robinson Forces OT and Beats Wall.
Reported by Tyler Edwards-BigCountryHomepage.com Sports.
"Forrest Robinson and the Eastland Mavericks got past the Wall Hawks 53-52 in overtime in Merkel on Wednesday. Robinson hit a three at the end of regulation to force overtime, and that's when the Mavericks were able to hold on for the one-point victory."
