Trinity has nothing to prove. Especially to you, Iron girl. Trinity does not set a goal of winning a MNC. The goal is and always has been, a State title in what many believe is the toughest playoff system there is. So far Trinity has not been undefeated while winning state, but that speaks as to just how tough this state is. Any objective HS football fan in TEXAS would tell you Trinity has had the best program in Texas for the last 5 or 6 years, yet even knowing that I worry each year about how Trinity is gonna get past Allen or Coppell or Stony Point or Plano. Those are all teams Trinity has either lost to, or come very close to losing to in the past. All those games have been very close.

This is why you will never see a Texas dynasty the likes of Bosco now or DLS in the '90's. No team in Texas is gonna string together ... not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7, or more (couldn't help myself) state titles in a row. BTW my favorite stat about the DLS 151 game winning streak. 0 wins against Texas teams. In fact, I believe they only played a few games against OOS opponents before eventually losing to an OOS opponent, Bellevue,WA (a dynasty in their state) whose first and only game against a Texas team, (Katy in 2009) was a decisive defeat 35-17. Now, how many wins and games played against Texas teams does Bosco have?

So, to me (I'm biased, but most of us are) it would be hands down Trinity because of their competition. But more importantly, I don't care. I'm happy to get the state title at the end of a long and very difficult season.

I am sure Bosco would welcome Trinity to the big apple to prove themselves. Just have them give Bosco a call. I also think Trinity could hold their own.

I'd love to see it, but it would probably only happen if Rosco was invited to the Texas Herbstreet Challenge.

I agree. Unfortunately the Texas Herb isa player too early in the year for a NJ team.

Also Trinity may well enjoy the ultimate in home field advantage nationally.

Teams like Trinity and Bosco need to meet at a "genuine" neutral site.

If it were just left up to the fans, I'm sure we could come up with and acceptable neutral site and date/time. I would love to see a neutral site game. I believe however Trinity coaches are more concerned with preparing for the playoffs ultimately, and a trip OOS for ANY reason does not help accomplish that goal, seeing as prestige/bragging rights is NOT a priority or the ultimate goal.

Byrnes has about 2,300 students and is the only high school in District 5. They have a separate freshmen campus with 600 students. The size of the town is irrelevant. They get kids from all over Spartanburg. Great program but there's no reason for them not to be good.

That enrollment number doesn't include the freshman academy. The total enrollment is almost 2,300. The town only has 2,800 residents. Do the math. Byrnes is getting kids from all over the area. Not to mention that the third largest school district in the state only has one high school: James F. Byrnes High School.

James F. Byrnes High School

This is not a small-town feel good story. Your way over-selling it. That's necessary in order to celebrate their success.

Good points all the way around Canes,But how many people had ever heard of Byrnes before 2008 very few. from 1955-2001 only 3 state championships. Our districts in sc are very small. Dorman High is 15 mins. down the road, Spartanburg High School is 25 min away, Greer High is 12 min away, Mauldin High is 20 mins from Byrnes. So Yes this is a small town feel good story in South Carolina, ask anyone from SC.

Small-town schools don't have 2,300 students. A school in a town of 2,800 should be in 1A. Byrnes gets their students from a very large population base.

Byrnes would be in Florida's 7A or 8A (largest class), for comparison. - Not sure what the cutoff is now, since realignment took place a few months ago, but they'd be no lower than 7A.

Indeed Bosco has 4 big time recruits. (I think only three are on all the top 100 players lists however.) Add to that they have "the" top recruit in the class of 14 and a strong junior class.
Indeed, on paper they may well have their best team ever. Because Bosco is from NJ people don't realize that the 09 MNC team is generally considered only their 4th best this decade. In order Bosco's 02, 03 and 06 were considered better. They deserved the MNC in both 02 and 03 but DLS had not lost and Bosco was new to the national scene.

Hell no. DLS in 08 and 09 were nowhere near the 02 and 03 teams. They'd have been spanked pretty badly.

DLS 2003 team is probably the second best they've ever had. Look how they dominated Evangel (with their starting QB going down during the game) and Evangel was only a TD away from winning a 5A title in a very good football state. As for the media bias due to DLS' winning streak, CalPreps, which uses math only, had DLS ranked #1 and DBP #5 in the country for 2003.

I like the 01 team more than the 03 team. Both are two of the greatest H.S. teams in Cali history.

I do agree no team would win 151 straight games playing in Texas 5A (12 seasons it took for DLS), but SLC was likely a Riley Dodge injury and a one-point loss to Katy away from winning FIVE straight 5A titles and rolled off something like a 79-1 streak and 58 straight in Texas. The Bellevue team that played Katy wasn't nearly as good as the one that defeated DLS and DLS lost twice in California and was tied twice by Northern California teams that season as well. You're comparing Bellevue teams from five seasons apart and DLS teams that were dominant to one that lost or tied four games OTHER than Bellevue... there is no comparison. Bellevue was widely considered the dominant team in Wasahington by a wide margin in 2004 and only had one close game all season. Not so in 2009 as Skyline was widely considered the best in the state with Bothell a likely second and Bellevue third. BTW, Bellevue lost to another Northern California team that year (Grant) at home by a whopping four points less than they lost to Katy in Texas.

Tell me... how many wins does a Texas team have against DBP? I'm not taking sides and do agree that Texas has had a much tougher playoff run, but If that's your test it can be turned both ways.

That close call came against a Jake Locker led Ferndale team, that won state the very next year. Bellevue for that game, was missing a lot of players due to injury.

But the best was 1999 (and take this with consideration of well good they've been with much less talent along with the usual level of coaching and execution):

1999 DLS Starters

Offense
LT - Jason Heltsley
LG - Adam Thomas
C - Bill Heppler
RG - Derek Landri (Notre Dame, NFL - Ravens)
RT - Tosh Lupoi (Cal-Berkeley)
TE - Devin Cook (U.C. Davis)
WR - Kevin Fordon
WR - Demitrius Williams (Oregon, NFL-Ravens)
QB - Matt Gutierrez (Michigan/Idaho St., NFL-Patriots/Broncos)
RB - D.J. Williams (Miami, NFL-Broncos)
RB - Nathan Kirkham

Defense
LE - Joe Miklos (UNLV)
LT - Lupoi
RT - Heltsley
RE - Adam Cartwright (Iona)
OLB - Kirkham
ILB - D.J. Williams
ILB - Kevin Simon (Tennessee (All-SEC), NFL-Redskins)
OLB - R.J. Bisaha
CB - Favroth
CB - Dem. Williams
S - Fordon

Notable Backups
CB - Sean O'Hara (Eastern Washington)
WR/DB - Jonathan Tucker (2000 Team MVP, Florida, MLB-Orioles)
OT - Robin Meadow (Washington, NFL-Ravens)
OL - Rob Sandie (Lehigh)
3rd RB - Simon
3rd WR - Favroth

One additional note: The best player on the JV team was a freshman named Maurice Drew (later Maurice Jones-Drew).
