"OFFENSIVE MVP
Hayden Lewis
School: Cisco
Position: Running back
Class: Senior
Height: 5-8
Weight: 170

Strength: Heart and desire were the hallmarks of this player, who despite being smallish in stature, emerged as one of the most athletic small-school backs in the area in 2011. If Cisco needed a tough yard, it was usually Lewis who would get it.

2010 Highlight: Rushed for 180 yards on 21 carries in Cisco's 36-35 loss to Refugio in the Class-2A DII state championship game. This included scoring runs of 2 and 22 yards.

Coachspeak: "He's got an athletic mindset and everything comes very natural to him," Coach Brent West said. "But he's an overachiever in the physical area. Being only 5-8 and 170 pounds without great sprinter speed, you almost have to have that athletic mindset, plus being an overachiever who plays with a big heart."

Why he's here: Produced big numbers despite splitting time in the backfield with Mason Reed. Lewis only carried the football 92 times in the regular season, but produced 1,110 yards and 20 touchdowns in the process. His averages were staggering — 12.07 yards per carry and a touchdown every 4.6 times he was given the football."

COACH OF THE YEAR
Brent West
School: Cisco

"Strength: With a 117-29 overall record since his arrival at Cisco in 2001, along with four trips to state championship games, West has the Lobo players trusting every word he says. He also has the reputation of being a talented game planner, with a knack for finding ways to get the opposition blocked.

2010 highlight: Facing defending state champion Idalou in the Region I quarterfinals, West's club dominated the Wildcats in a 27-14 win at Colorado City. The Loboes pounded out 251 yards rushing against what was considered by many to be the best Class-2A defense in the state — outscoring Idalou 20-7 in the second half.

Playerspeak: "He's led us extremely well," senior defensive lineman Jacob Avery said. "The work and the hours he puts into it with getting us scouting reports really paid off. ... He's the best. It's not that he's constantly yelling, because we all have a good time. But in those situations when he needs to get after us, that's when he steps up."

Why he's here: A fourth trip to a state championship game in less than a decade is a good place to start. West's Loboes finished the season at 14-1, falling to Refugio, 36-35 in the Division II title game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Along the way, Cisco took the District 4 Division II title and defeated four straight playoff opponents in Sanford-Fritch (61-28), Idalou (27-14), Holliday (34-0) and Corsicana Mildred (35-28)."

Eastland QB is at top of class in 2A.

"PLAYER OF THE YEAR..
Trent Brittain
School: Eastland
Position: QB
Class: Senior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 175
Strength: It might be unfair to point out one strength in Brittain's game and label it as his biggest selling point. In other words, the teen has too many strengths to narrow the field completely. Aside from being an accurate passer with a strong arm, Brittain was highly mobile, poised and proved to be a big-time performer in the clutch. We're not talking about a product of the Eastland offensive system here.
2010 Highlight: Was at his absolute best during a 51-22 win over Littlefield area round of the playoffs, hitting 19 of 24 passes for 410 yards and two scores. He also rushed 12 times for 122 yards and two more scores, giving him a direct hand in 632 yards and four scores.
Coachspeak: "We had a fun, productive year, and with Trent being a three-year varsity kid who was struggling because of an injury, it was great to see him bounce back from the year he had," Eastland coach Brian Hulett said. "He's got a good arm, he can run, he makes good decisions and he was a leader on the field for us."
Why he's here: Brittain hit 139 of 214 regular season passes for 2,714 yards and 38 touchdowns against only six interceptions while helping the Mavericks to a 10-0 record. He also rushed 65 times for 622 yards and 10 more scores. Eastland eventually finished the year at 12-1.

OFFENSIVE MVP
His averages were staggering — 12.07 yards per carry and a touchdown every 4.6 times he was given the football.

DEFENSIVE MVP
Shelton Zarate
School: Coleman
Position: Linebacker
Class: Junior
Height: 5-11
Weight: 215
Strength: Fundamentally sound, Zarate has a firm grasp of both how to get to the ball carrier quickly, but also how to consistently him down once he gets there. Not the fastest linebacker in the Big Country, but certainly one of the most reliable.
2010 Highlight: Spearheaded a dominating defensive effort in a 27-0 win over Early on Sept. 9, collecting 12 tackles, four of which were behind the line of scrimmage. Zarate also interceptioned off a pass while helping Coleman earn a shutout.
Coachspeak: "We actually thought about moving him to defensive line, because of his size," Coleman coach Brad Ballard said. "But he worked extremely hard over the summer, lost a little bit of weight, and it really paid dividends. ... He takes very good angles when he goes to make tackles and he does a great job of wrapping them up when he gets there. When he gets a hand on you, you're not going to get away."
Why he's here: Always around the football, Zarate took part in more than 120 tackles during the regular season, but was particularly harmful once he got near the football. Aside from posting four sacks on the year, Zarate interceptioned off two passes, forced to fumbles and recovered two others.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR..
J.T. Newton
School: Bangs
Position: Quarterback
Class: Sophomore
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160
Strength: Confidence. Anyone who watches Newton play quickly realizes that this is a player who believes in his own ability. And with two years of eligibility remaining, there's no telling how much further that ability will develop.
2010 Highlight: Despite throwing three early interceptions in a 28-19 loss at Cisco on Sept. 16, Newton demonstrated an uncommon level of poise for a sophomore, eventually finishing with 251 yards passing for two scores and 73 yards rushing. All of this, coming on the road against a team that nearly won the Division II state championship.
Coachspeak: "He plays better under pressure," Bangs coach Chuck Lipsey said. "That's a good characteristic to have. A lot of people get nervous, but he plays better when he gets in pressure situations. ... The kids respond to him, but he also had good people around him and to do what he did, he had to have a good offensive line and receivers and he'd be the first one to tell you that."
Why he's here: Aside from hitting 203 of 330 throws for 2,335 yards and 19 touchdowns, Newton also proved highly mobile, rushing for 401 yards and 11 scores on 168 carries.

2011 Abilene Reporter-News' All-Big Country Super Team football squad.
"HAGEN HUTCHINSON
School: Stamford
Position: QB/DB
Class: Junior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 180
Strength: Hagen, the son of Stamford coach Wayne Hutchinson, knows his football, and he's poised under pressure too. But he's tough. Hagen played much of the season with a high ankle sprain.
2011 Highlight: Hit 12 of 23 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-21 victory over Albany in a Region I-1A semifinal Nov. 25 at Shotwell Stadium. The junior also ran 14 times for 60 yards and one touchdown in the victory, which avenged a 28-21 loss to the Lions during the regular season and eliminated what many people believed to be Stamford's toughest opponent on the road to the state championship game.
Coachspeak: "I'm very proud of him," Coach Hutchinson said. "I'm proud of him as a father, and I'm proud of him as his coach. Classroom, on the field, what more could you ask for? To me, he's the full package."
Why he's here: Was the glue that held Stamford together through a remarkable 13-3 season that saw the Bulldogs overcome an 0-2 district start and reach the Class 1A Division I championship game. Through the regular season, the junior hit 116 of 185 throws for 1,892 yards and 20 scores against only three interceptions. He also rushed 98 times for 816 yards, finding the end zone an additional 17 times.OFFENSIVE MVP

2011 Highlight: Rushed for 180 yards on 21 carries in Cisco's 36-35 loss to Refugio in the Class 2A Division II state championship game, including touchdown runs of 2 and 22 yards.
Coachspeak: "He's got an athletic mindset and everything comes very natural to him," Cisco coach Brent West said.
His averages were staggering — 12.07 yards per carry and a touchdown every 4.6 times he was given the football.

DEFENSIVE MVP...Blanford Paul
School: Munday
Position: Defensive line
Class: Senior
Height: 6-0
Weight: 250
Strength: A combination of size, strength and quickness allowed Paul to wreak havoc up front, with 70 tackles posted against consistent double-team blocking. Any offense facing Munday had to account for Paul on every play.
2011 Highlight: Was nothing short of dominant in Munday's 61-13 rout of Ralls on Nov. 10, recording 12 tackles, two of which were sacks.
Coachspeak: "As the year went along, he really became an anchor on our defensive line," Munday coach Patrick Corcoran said. "Not only does he have great size, but he's extremely strong in the weight room. He's also very quick. He can really run for a kid who is built the way he is."
Why he's here: Paul blew up enough plays to record 24 tackles for loss, including 11 sacks. Voted as the District 8-1A Division II Defensive MVP, Paul recovered two fumbles, forced another and recorded four quarterback hurries while helping the Moguls reach the Division II state title game.

Newcomer of the Year..LORENZO JOE
School: Cooper
Position: Receiver
Class: Sophomore
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175
Strength: His drive and will to win. With good size and speed, Joe has all the tools necessary to be a good receiver. But it was his desire to succeed and refusal to be denied that set him apart. The favorite target for Cooper quarterback Clayton Nicholas, Joe was on the receiving end of a number of game- and season-changing catches for the 9-4 Cougars. And more than one of those catches was made because he wanted the ball more than his defender.
2011 highlight: It was "the catch" of the 2011 season for Cooper. With his team down to Arlington Lamar 24-21 in the opening round of the 5A Division II playoffs, Joe caught a 22-yard jump ball from Nicholas with no time left on the clock to lift the Cougars to a 27-24 win. He had four catches for less than 50 yards before that grab, which will forever go down as one of Cooper football's great playoff moments.
Coachspeak: "He's well beyond his years, maturity-wise, and he's got a great competitive spirit about him," Cooper coach Todd Moebes said. "He's extremely coachable and he likes to do the right thing. He's just a good kid. ... Everybody can see that he's talented, and he is, but there's a lot of internal things about Lorenzo that people don't know about that make him special."
Why he's here: As just a second-year high school player, Joe made his mark on the Coogs' season, tallying 47 catches for 740 yards and nine touchdowns. And he showed up big in the playoffs, coming up with the game-winning catch against Lamar and making a 43-yard catch with two minutes left the next week to set up the game-winning score in a 21-14 win over Amarillo High.

COACH OF THE YEAR..MIKE REED
School: Throckmorton
Strength: Reed took over a program just three years removed from a state championship and raised standards to an even higher level. "A lot of times games are won before you even put the pen to paper to get the X's and O's drawn," Reed said. "I feel like that's something that over the year's I've gotten better at doing, getting the kids prepared in other areas."
2011 highlight: While winning the Six-Man Division I state championship is obviously big, Reed also notched his 100th career victory with a 90-70 shootout over Dallas Covenant five games into his 10th season as a head coach.
Playerspeak: "We came out to practice every day to work," senior center Blayton Oliver said. "We didn't take a day off. He came prepared. Every week after a game, he would work all that weekend to prepare for the next week. We would come in on Monday and get what we needed learned for that next Friday or Saturday game.
"He got his other coaches ready to go as well. He's a real offensive savvy coach. He knew the plays, knew the defense, studied film real hard and just put all his effort into working hard for us and getting us prepared so we could to the best we could do."
Why he's here: After losing to Garden City in the 2010 state final, Reed had the Greyhounds rolling again in 2011. Throckmorton posted its third consecutive unbeaten regular season and capped the year with a 48-36 victory over Gail Borden County in the state finals. In 10 seasons, Reed's career record is 109-16 with his teams reaching the state finals four times.

Top 20 HS Games of '11: The Top 5.
By Greg Tepper // TexasFootball.com.
Dave Campbell's Texas Football is counting down the 20 best games from the 2011 Texas high school football season.

2 – Refugio 36, Cisco 35 (Dec. 16).
"Sure, this game gets bonus points for its importance – the Class 2A Division II state championship game at Cowboys Stadium – but I contend that this would’ve made the top ten regardless of when it happened. The great irony of this game is that Refugio was criticized all year for its relentless style – coach Jason Herring continually said he only did it to prepare his team for the state championship – and it needed every bit of preparation to get past an outstanding Cisco squad in front of a raucous crowd in Arlington. The amazing thing is, with just 8:20 remaining in the game, you’d think this game was headed toward another Refugio blowout: RB Shiloh Whetsel’s 8-yard touchdown run put the Bobcats up 36-19. But Cisco would not go away quietly…not in the least. RB Mason Reed returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, speeding 88 yards to close the gap to 36-26. The Loboes defense then took the opportunity to stand tall, forcing a Bobcats three-and-out, and the offense happily repaid them, marching 53 yards in seven plays in just over two minutes to close the gap to 36-33 with 4:10 left. In the span of four minutes, Cisco had turned an apparent blowout into a nail-biter. Things only got more dicey for Refugio on the next drive, as QB Travis Quintanilla – who carved up Cisco all game – was sacked on three consecutive plays, driving the Bobcats back to their own 10. It was then that Refugio’s coach Herring had a bold stroke, instructing punter (and All-State wide receiver) Lynx Hawthorne not to punt it away, but to instead run out of the back of the end zone for a safety. The strategy was curious but sound: the maneuver closed the gap to just 36-35 and gave Cisco the ball back via a free kick, but it pinned the Loboes deeper than they would’ve been after a punt with just 2:28 to play. Cisco fielded the free kick on their own 34 and began bruising up the field, reaching and passing midfield with just over a minute left. But the Refugio defense firmed up, facing Cisco with a 4th and 3 on the Bobcats’ 43. The Loboes ran perhaps their most classic play – a power lead to star RB Hayden Lewis – and the rusher was stymied right at the line to gain. The sticks came from the sideline and confirmed the old cliché: football is a game of inches, and Refugio had held the Loboes 12 inches short. The Bobcats took over, ran out the clock, and took home not only a trophy, but a victory in one of the best championship games of the last decade."
