Thursday state championship previews.
By Greg Tepper//TexasFootball.com.

Class 2A Division I State Championship.

Melissa vs. Hempstead, 8 p.m., Cowboys Stadium
Tonight, we’re going to bear witness to a very dramatic downshift at Cowboys Stadium. We’re going to go from (what I believe to be) a very high-octane, up-and-down, track-meet of a game between Munday and Tenaha…to two teams whose best assets are devastating defenses in Melissa and Hempstead. That’s not to say that there’s not going to be offensive talent on the field – Melissa’s QB Wes McQueen is as much of a threat running as he is throwing, and the triumvirate of QB Obie Wilder, RB Archie Taylor and WR Trent Momon for Hempstead has been impressive all year – but both of these defenses are the reason they’re here. I’ve been touting Melissa’s defense for quite some time now – to the occasional resistance of managing editor Travis Stewart – because of DB Brad Bush, LB Chris Smith, DL Vic Hollingsworth. And, well, now they’ve shut down New Boston, Daingerfield and Muleshoe in consecutive weeks…any more questions? And Hempstead’s defense has been great all year, put most recently on display in the impressive takedown of Tatum’s explosive offense, led by guys like LBs Ronnie Jones and Daniel Herrera. So even though there’s going to be a lot of really impressive offensive players out there – I, for one, am really excited to see McQueen, especially if he gets RB Kristov George going – I think this one’s decided by defense. And when these two units are so close, I expect a close one. Give me Hempstead – just love that linebacking corps – but this is a third state title game of the day that I expect to be within one possession.
Tepper’s pick: Hempstead 24, Melissa 21."
