Mike, Thank You for updating all of us on the U.I.L. Rules.

Last night in McAllen with 2:00 min left before the half a Laredo Alecsander player caught a 30 yard pass for a TD.
That player ran thru' the back of the end zone into the Laredo Band and mingled with them during the try for extra point. Then he walked around the back of the end zone and out of bounds bowing to the crowd to the bench. An official was right there at the flag but ignored that kid. No penalty flag.

Please tell me the present rule for exiting the field by a player. I remember coaching in the 1970's we had a flag for our player running off the field about the 10 yard line on the opponemt's side of the field, and running around the back of the end zone to our bench. It was a 5 yd penalty.

The RULE was that a player HAD to exit the field across the sideline on his team's side of the field.
Has that been changed? Running out of the end zone to your bench drew a flag then too. THANKS Mike.

THe substitution rules require a deparing player leave at his own sideline. The intent is to prevent a team from gaining an advantage when they realize late that they have too man players. Without the rule they could step off on the opponent's sideline or in the back of the end zone to avoid the flag for too many players. In the scenario you described, the departing player gained no advantage by not coming back into the end zone and then going out on the sideline.

the current NCAA rules pertaining to unsportsmanship fouls 9-2-1a1h. going into the stands to interact with spectators is considered unsportsmanship and a foul. I dont distinguish between fans or the band they are considered the same in this instance.
