Merkel dominates Jim Ned in 5-2A showdown.
By Evan Ren.
MERKEL—"It drew a packed house in anticipation of the No. 1 class 2A girls team in the state facing a perennial power. And for all of 12 minutes, it lived up to the billing.
Beyond that point, however, top-ranked Merkel completely dominated visiting Jim Ned on Tuesday, handing the Lady Indians a rare lopsided district loss, 57-37, at Merkel gym.
Chera Chaney scored 14 points and Allison Szabo added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Badgers (25-0, 8-0 District 5-2A), who blew the game open with an 18-3 run through the third quarter.
Fourth-ranked Jim Ned (19-8, 6-2), which finished an ice-cold 11-for-59 from the floor, got nine points from Dyllan Brown and seven each from Lindsey Doherty and Meagan O'Dell.
"I think early on, we had a few nerves," said Merkel coach Clay Barnett, whose team also defeated Jim Ned 49-45 on Dec. 13. "We've had some big games like this where the adrenaline was pumping and we made a few mistakes.
"But I told the girls if we can stay with them early, after we settle down we can play with them and beat them. I didn't think Jim Ned would go as cold as they did in the second half, but I think some of it was because of our defense."
Ironically, Merkel's dominance began directly following Jim Ned's brightest moment of the evening — a four-point play by Ellyn Avery at the 3:18 mark of the second quarter to give the Lady Indians a 22-19 lead.
Merkel answered by closing the half with a 7-0 run to take a 26-22 edge into the break. But that was just the beginning.
Holding Jim Ned to an 0-for-14 shooting effort through the third quarter, Merkel opened the period with a 14-0 run, by the end of which the Lady Badgers held 40-22 lead at the 2:20 mark.
"We didn't shoot well at all in the third quarter and it got their break going because they rebound well," said Jim Ned coach Jim Avery, whose club trailed by 19 heading into the final quarter. "If we shoot well, then we can slow things down and set up our press. But if you don't shoot well against them, they hurt you with the break."
Merkel closed with a 42-35 edge on the glass, and drew plenty of free throw opportunities in transition, of which they hit 22 of 36 attempts.Jim Ned, by comparison, had far fewer chances at the stripe, finishing 12-of-17.
"Everything turned south in the third quarter because we just didn't shoot the ball well enough," Avery said. "And, we didn't get many second-chance shots because we didn't rebound well enough either."

MERKEL 57-37 JIM NED.

JIM NED (19-8, 6-2 5-2A) — Lexi Tutt 6, Dyllan Brown 9, Ellyn Avery 4, Lindsey Doherty 7, Meagan O'Dell 7,Blythe Weatherly 2, Jennah Coffman 2.
